Post subject: Is 2/4 in casinoes actually beatable?

I went to a 18 and up casino and played some 2/4 limit hold'em and won 40 dollars. In general there was one rock at the table and others were pretty fishy, but not terrible. I flopped a queen-high flush and I bet the flop and everyone folded, though :/
Anyway, considering they take the small blind and also take rake (not to mention the fact that I opted to tip the dealer two or three times) is it worth playing 2/4? Against slightly worse competition online I was getting something like 14BB/100 (over only 2K hands though), but the rake doesn't kill you as bad.
So, the question is, should I go back there and keep playing?

Depends on the rake. Id think it would extremely hard to beat any game for stakes of 3/6 or less live.

3/6 is probably real close to profitable depending on if they take other drops (bad beat, high hand, etc).

At my local B&M they take a max rake of $5 with a drop of $1 for the bad beat jackpot. I put in about 25 hours of break even poker there before I decided that it wasn't beatable unless populated by all donkies.

Ive beat my local 2/4 game over about 50 hours, unfortunately that only works out to about 1500 hands. 4/8 is beatable, same rake, same players, dobule to stakes.

Very true. I've haven't played much of the 4/8 my casino offers since it's usually dealer's choice: holdem, omaha (limit omaha, yuck), pineapple and crazy pineapple.
Too bad the next game up is a 10/20 kill game with different daily games including Omaha-8. A nice 5/10 straight holdem would be my choice if it was available here.

I started playing poker 8 years ago in casinos. As far as brick and mortar games go I've beaten every level 2-4 to 20-40 from Toronto to Tunica. I have to admit that the lower limits were beatable but still very tough, 2 fish at the table is good but when 6 fish are seeing every flop 1 of them always hits, I think Sklansky refers to it as horserace theory and the rake is fucked. Try to get into session fee games ASAP even if you only have a bare minimum banroll give it a shot, session fee games are far better than rake games.
You might want to try different casinos too, it's worth the extra gas to find a good game, any casino with a recently opened poker room is usually a gold mine because it's full of blackjack and baccarat players who've seen poker on TV and want to give it a try. There are always very juicy underground games running in any big city, just don't carry your whole bankroll in your pocket because undergrounds have a tendancy to get robbed. Underground games will give almost anybody credit to keep the game running and the rake flowing in, personally I've never gone "on the books" because I'm not comfortable playing with borrowed money but it's always an option, these guys usually write of their debts and don't bother sending ppl to your house to break your legs lol.
Another thing to consider when playing live is comps, Tunica Mississippi is about 10 minutes south of Memphis and has the best poker comps in the world. Play 4 hours/day and ALL of your meals are free ( Great buffet at the Horseshoe ) drinks are free and you get a very nice room for $25/night mon-fri and $35/night on weekends.
Live play is a nice change of pace for me but after playing 3000 hands/day online it just seems too slow for me now. There are things you can do live that you can't do online however, usually referred to as angle shooting. For example if you pause long eneugh the dealer assumes you're checking and someone in late position bets and you can checkraise, if they don't bet you can say "wait, I never checked", you should always look to your left for players who are folding behind you, they are not in the hand and are usually inconsiderate and let their actions be known, you can go from middle position to the button very easily if you are paying attention.
Good Luck
