A raise does lots of things for you:
o You might isolate the limper + BB. Your hand gains A LOT of equity with position and 2 or 3 way.
o You build a pot, so if you hit your set players will call down with hands nearly drawing dead to you.
o With a larger pot, your reverse implied odds are less of a problem if you flop an overpair in a multi-pot.
o It broadens the range of hands thinking players (or PokerTracker users) put you on when you do raise.

and my personal favorite...
a raise gives you information:
- did i get reraised, hmm, probably AA - JJ or AK. with no reraise, it's probably safe to assume no big made pairs, so, you can play your TT on the low board pretty hard, regardless of whether you hit your set.
also (as fnord said), if you raise preflop, you're less worried about someone holding a six.
