That statement really hits home with me right now. I'm coming to the sad conclusion that I'm simply not as good of a poker player as I once thought. My ring game troubles have continued way beyond the point of "running bad", and I'm at least smart enough to recognize a bad play after the fact.
I'm up overall online for one simple reason - I'm a decent SnG player because I know how to abuse weak/tight players in that format. I'm good enough at being selectively aggressive in that format that it compensates for the holes in my game. If I had only played ring games, I'd be way down.
This has already been said by others, but the best advice for someone struggling is probably:
1. Play at a stake level your bankroll can handle. Your bankroll should start out at least 10x the buy in for SnG/ring games.
2. Highly consider playing SnGs. You are punished much less for a loose call or two in this format. It's easy to undo 1-2 hours of good poker at a ring table with 1-2 key mistakes. SnGs limit the damage you can do with a loose call/mistake, which in turn limits tilt.
