One of the things about poker is that there is a hell of a lot of gray area involved and nothing is ever as black and white as it seems. That said we are well aware of the top two sites ToS and their restrictions on use of this software.
There are also, however, several sites out there that are just scammy and don't provide much value at all for the money you have to pay for them. An $80 Odds Calculator is the one that comes to my mind and someone just starting out is more willing to splurge on these services thinking they are what is keeping them from winning. We link to sites that we know are honest and provide a good service and product. Poker-Edge has been around forever and PTR boasts thousands of members who already use their product; HandHQ is just a small operation which has been around a while as well. We have to use PTR/Sharkscope to verify our instructor's stats so we can provide our subscribers with solid winning players too.
We try to preface our recommendation saying that its against the ToS of the poker sites, but IF you're going to do it then you should use these sites since they are known to be reputable and you're not going to get ripped off. It very much reminds of the whole abstinence/condom issue to teenagers where its like "we don't think you should have sex but if you do here are condoms because getting pregnant sucks."
Getting ripped off sucks as I've had several students spend a bunch of money on crappy software such as $80 poker calculators and I feel bad for them, because they only have $500 in their bankrolls.
