I check in the dark sometimes to hopefully give aggressive players pause in HU pots. I hate playing out of the blinds in raised pots but I also hate giving up the best hand. I think it can sometimes neutralize positional disadvantage if you don't do it all the time.
I never do it. I understand what you are saying about table image, but I have to think the effect that it has in that regard is minor. Meanwhile, you are giving up your ability to play whatever the optimal betting strategy is based on the cards that actually hit the board and your opponent's tendencies.
