Kellogsx, there's a difference between having poor strategy - which is a normal learning experience - and having "bad habits" - which to me means you know What to do in a given situation but choose not to do it. Once you have an effective strategy (or a rule) for a certain situation if you break it (with a bad habit) then you are doing what I talk about above.
If you are consistently making bad choices early in a ring game it means you have unrealistic expectations on how quickly you are supposed to accumulate money. If you can add 20% to your stack EACH HOUR in ring, then you're doing good. Taking a SnG mentality of playing select hands and playing them agressively is good - if that's your style. But taking the SNG mentality of "doubling up early" is really really bad.
An SNG is like owning an island that is slowly sinking into the sea. You need to SELL IT QUICK to make any money. If you don't then you get Nothing.
A ring game is like a 401k. If you make prudent and patient decisions based on information and experience then you will slowly build your nestegg.
It sounds like you have a distorted view of time when you sit down at a ring game to me.
