How to download and install
Although Carbon offers an instant-play option that you can use from your web browser, for the best gameplay experience, you should install the desktop poker client. Head on over to http://www.carbonpoker.ag or grab the Windows installation file from FTR.
We’ll be describing the installation procedure for Windows machines, but if you’re using a Mac, the process should be similar for you. The installation file takes up 61MB of space, which is larger than average. When fully installed, the files and folders will take up approximately 150MB.
Once you run the installation file, you’ll be prompted to select a language: English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, or Chinese. Click through the following screens, and you’ll be able to accept the License Agreement and select a destination folder to save the installation. Finally you can choose the Start Menu folder that you would like to place the Carbon Poker shortcuts in. After you’ve configured all these options, click on Install.
Assuming the installation finishes without a hitch, you’ll be presented with the following:
Click “Finish,” and the poker software will open up. The first time you launch it, Carbon Poker will probably download and install updates. This will happen periodically whenever new upgrades and patches are released.
Creating a New Account
Now that you have the software installed, it’s time to create your account. Click on the button, towards the bottom-left of the poker client, that says, “Create Account.”
A signup form will appear in your web browser, and you’ll be able to choose your username and password. You will also have to provide your personal details, like name and address.
Don’t worry about entering a Promotion Code at this point. You will do this later on when you make your first deposit. After you’ve filled out the required information, click on the green “JOIN NOW” button to complete the registration process.
Making a Deposit
Before you begin playing for real money, you’ll have to make a deposit. After logging into the software, click on the red “CASHIER” button. A deposit form will pop up in your browser.
Enter all the relevant info, such as your method of deposit and the amount. For most players, credit cards are the best option, which you can use to fund your account with between $50 and $1,000. Other options may include Skrill and Cash Transfer, depending on your geographical location and other factors. Remember to enter the Carbon Poker Promotion Code CARBONPK in the appropriate field to receive your initial deposit bonus of 100% up to $1,000.
As a newly depositing player, you’re eligible for a bonus matching the amount of your deposit up to a maximum of $1,000. You’ll need to use the promotion code CARBONPK to take advantage of this offer.
As you play cash games, sit and gos, and tournaments on Carbon, you’ll receive 10 player points for every $1 in rake or tournament fees. Once you accumulate 4,000 of these points, you’ll get a $20 increment of your bonus. As you collect the required number of points again and again, you’ll be issued a further $20 each time until the entire bonus amount is released. You have 60 days to fulfill these playthrough requirements. After that time, any remaining bonus funds that you have not earned will become void. To clear the entire $1,000 bonus will require 200,000 player points, or $20,000 in rake paid.
For more details about this bonus, check out our Carbon Poker promotion code page.
Software Details & Features
The Carbon Poker software, although not the most renowned among poker players, is certainly solid and commendable. In fact, it offers certain quirks and abilities that are not present or are rare at competing poker sites. Making the software package even better is the fact that you can use it on Windows machines as well as Macs. There’s also an instant play option that’s compatible with Android, iOS, and web browsers.
The Carbon Poker Lobby has three possible views. The first is “Quick Seat,” which allows you to rapidly start playing without choosing your own table and seat. This feature is great for recreational players who can’t be bothered to fiddle around indefinitely before getting a chance to put their chips in the middle.
By using the “Selectors” view, you can see all the games divided into categories, such as “Cash Games,” “Sit & Go,” and “Tournaments.” These are further subdivided according to various characteristics so that you can see a listing of all tables of a particular type.
By default, there’s a sports ticker scrolling across the bottom of the lobby and some ad-like images cycling through on the left-hand side. Occasionally, one-line pop-up messages will appear at the bottom of the lobby to alert you to tournaments that are coming up or tournaments with substantial prize pools that are still in the late registration period. While the sports ticker can be turned off, most of these other “features” cannot be disabled.
The third view, called “Advanced Filter,” enables you to customize the tables and games shown in the lobby by almost any criteria you can think of. The filters will be displayed on the top half of the lobby while the games matching the filters chosen will appear on the bottom half. Unfortunately, you cannot turn on the advanced filters and apply them to the normal “Selectors” lobby view; you can use either the selectors or the filters but not both at the same time.
While using either the “Selectors” or “Advanced Filter,” you’ll see a little arrow next to the names of the listed games. You can click on this arrow to get more information. While the information displayed for tournies and SNGs is cursory and of little interest to most players, the details displayed for cash tables can be quite valuable particularly to those who wish to table-select.
By clicking on the menu option “Settings” within the poker lobby, you can customize the software to your liking.
Here you can enable 4 Color Deck, set your auto-rebuy preferences, mute sounds, and personalize a whole host of other elements. Some of the choices, like “Hand History Settings” and “Poker Settings” will bring up a window showing you dozens or things that you can configure however you want them.
There are quite a few different types of poker spread at Carbon: Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo, Stud/8, Razz, Badugi, A-5 triple draw, 2-7 TDL, 5-Card Draw, and HORSE. However action is pretty light in games outside of Hold’em and Omaha.
We should note at this point that the Merge Network, of which Carbon Poker is a part, used to offer a much more diverse selection of games. Some of them were quite difficult to find at other sites, such as Limit 5-Card Draw with a Joker as a “Bug,” and other games that weren’t even forms of poker, like Euchre and Backgammon. However, all of these games have been removed from the Merge software.
Carbon Poker uses 128-bit SSL version 3 encryption protocols to protect your sensitive account information. The random number generator (RNG) used at the tables generates cards without any reference to the action at the tables for unbiased results.
You can easily access the Carbon Poker cashier by clicking on the red button marked “CASHIER” in the poker lobby. The cashier will open in your web browser.
By default, a deposit form appears, but you can choose other functions from the menu at the left. You can request a payout, change your personal details, view your cashier history, and more.
You can download the Carbon Poker client whether you’re using a Mac or PC. According to the information on Carbon Poker’s webpage, the system requirements for Windows-based machines are:
- Windows 2000, XP, Vista, or 7
- 400Mhz+ Pentium CPU
- 128MB+ RAM
- 50 MB HDD space
And for Macs:
- OSX 10.5 or higher
- Intel-based hardware
- 50MB HDD space
These hard drive space requirements seem quite optimistic given that our test installation took up 136 MB. When you consider the size of notes files and hand histories, it’s probably best to set aside at least 150MB for the Carbon software.
If you’re interested in using the mobile or instant play versions of the poker client, then you can access it using any of the following devices:
- iPhones, iPads and iPad touch with iOS version 5+
- Android phones and tablets with Android operating system 4.4 or higher
- Any device (including desktops and laptops) using Google Chrome 33.0 or later
The tables at Carbon Poker are just what you would expect of modern poker software. Towards the bottom of the tables are the advanced action options, which change to action buttons when it’s your turn to act. There are a few handy betsize buttons that allow you to size your bet in terms of fractions of the pot or multiples of the bb.
If you deselect the “Auto Muck” checkbox, you can take advantage of a few special features when in a heads-up pot. When your opponent folds before the river, you’ll be able to rabbit hunt, i.e., view what the remaining board cards would have been. If either of you folds, you’ll be able to show either one or both of your hole cards to your opponent.
In the top-right corner of each table is a menu entitled “Window Options.” Click it to bring up a variety of useful functions.
Some of these choices are designed to make it easier for you to manage your current session, like “Tile Tables” and “Sit Out Next Big Blind All Tables.” Other options enable you to customize your playing experience, such as the “Preferred Seating” and “Personalize Tables” menu items.
While playing poker, the hand number for the previous hand will be displayed towards the top-left on the table. Click on it to launch the hand history browser.
You’ll be able to select a hand from the list on the right and see what the action was, who won, and the size of the pot. Unfortunately, there’s no replayer included in this window; you can only read what happened rather than viewing the action step by step.
Carbon Poker is one of the few sites serving the US market that offers a comprehensive mobile poker solution. In fact, you can use the mobile app to not only play poker, but also to bet on sports or casino games as well. Even if you’re not using your mobile device, you can still access the instant play client from your web browser.
Note that Carbon will detect what type of device you’re using and offer a slightly different graphical layout depending on whether you’re on a phone, tablet, or standard computer. Therefore some of the information below might be slightly different from what you experience.
Head on over to the m.carbonpoker.ag website to begin. Enter your account credentials at the login screen.
You’ll have the option to use the default Quick Seat feature to get in the action right away or the “Selectors” view to allow you to choose your table and seat. Note that some games, particularly MTTs, are not available from the Quick Seat screen, so you’ll have to enable the “Selectors” if you want to play them.
The “Selectors” lobby view shows you a small, graphical representation of each table in the list. The white dots represent empty seats while the black ones stand for seats that are occupied. You’ll be able to thus tell at a glance how many people are at each table and how many seats are free.
Mobile Lobby Settings
Click on the symbol of three horizontal bars on the top-left of the mobile lobby to bring up a list of options. You’ll be able to access other mobile products, like the casino or sportsbook, configure settings, or bring up the cashier to make a deposit. That’s right: You can make a deposit to your account right from your smartphone.
Of particular note is the “General Settings” option, which will bring up a page allowing you to change many different options relating to graphical display, sounds, and gameplay preferences.
Mobile Poker Tables
By simply clicking on a table in the lobby, you can begin to play for real money on your mobile device. The tables are nicely laid out, and most of the features from the desktop client are also present when playing on a mobile device.
Your action buttons will be towards the bottom of the screen. One minor inconvenience with the Carbon mobile product is that you can’t bet or raise in a big-bet game with a single action. Instead, you have to choose to bet or raise and then enter the value within a dialog that pops up. It would have been more convenient to offer some betsize buttons right on the table itself.
Information on the top-left of the table includes the table name, the strength of your connection, the type of game, and the previous hand number. By clicking on the hand number, you can bring up a HH viewer! This is an unexpected feature in a mobile poker client.
Towards the top-right of the table is an options menu. Clicking on it will allow you to add chips, change auto-post and auto-muck, or sit out. You can also access a full suite of settings by clicking on “Settings” from within this menu. This brings you to the same place as the “General Settings” option in the lobby.
Carbon Poker states in its mobile FAQ that you cannot multitable with the mobile client:
Q. Can I play multiple tables at once on a mobile device?
A. Currently, our mobile version only allows users to play on one table. You will be shown multiple warning messages stating that multiple table play is not supported by CarbonPoker mobile.
Nevertheless, we have found that it is indeed possible to multitable on Carbon mobile. In fact, there are certain features of the software which appear to serve no other purpose than to make multitabling easier and more convenient.
When you’re playing poker on the mobile client, you can jump to the lobby by clicking “Lobby” on the top-left corner of the table. You can then choose and enter another table, and you can keep repeating this process.
When you’re playing more than one table, a graphical representation of your hole cards at each table will appear towards the top of the screen. You can then switch between tables merely by clicking on the hole cards at the table you want to jump to. There’s a colored bar beneath each set of hole cards. This bar will change color when it’s your turn to act. The bar will get shorter and shorter as your time to act runs out.
Carbon Poker Odds Calculator
Carbon Poker offers a free Poker Odds Calculator to its valued players. This piece of software can display pot odds, mucked hands and other information while you play at the tables. It even contains a HUD that will give you stats on the opposition based upon what each player has done in previous hands.
Although the functionality offered by the Carbon Poker Odds Calculator pales in comparison to that of Poker Tracker 4 or Holdem Manager 2, it’s better than having no HUD at all. Anyway, the price of $0 can’t be beat by any commercial software package. If you aren’t using any other HUD and tracking tool, then you’ve got nothing to lose by firing up Carbon’s free offering the next time you play.
The installation file is about 11MB, and the software when fully installed takes up perhaps 25MB. It’s only available for Windows machines at present although Carbon states that a Mac version should be released shortly. The Poker Odds Calculator only works on Carbon Poker tables – it isn’t even available to players on other sites on the Merge Network. This exclusive software download will help you get a leg up on the competition.
Casino and Sports
In addition to its longstanding poker client, Merge (and by extension Carbon) has developed an online casino and sportsbook. You can access them by clicking on the “CASINO” or “SPORTS” tabs within the poker software. Doing so will bring up the relevant product in your web browser. In addition, Blackjack and Casino Hold’em are available with one click from the poker client.
Final Thoughts: The Bottom Line
With poker, casino and sportsbook betting possible, Carbon is a great destination for Americans looking for a place to play. There are Windows, Mac, and mobile poker clients, so you can enjoy Carbon Poker’s games with a wide range of hardware. Don’t hesitate any longer.
