$25 NL 6-Max: Table Selection with Jyms Poker Video

Description:  In this video I start off in the lobby of PokerStars showing you how to select tables. I spend most of the session going over Hud stats that will allow you to know when you are in a good seat at the right table. I start at one $25NL table to explain what you need to watch for and avoid, then while two tabling I go over some ideas about what look for when sitting at the tables and when to know it's time to move on. Table selection becomes so improtant at higher stakes but can easily double your winrate at the micro tables when payed attention to. Click here to discuss this video further in the FTR Poker Forum.

“Solid Video” by BreakDancinCow, 23 Jan 2009

I'm totally new to the idea of using a Poker Tracker or HUD and this video did a great job of explaining what they do and how they can be used to maximize profitability. Also, I had never really considered position at a table when sitting down, I got some tips for identifying and exploiting good seats and whales.

“Worthwhile video” by DoanDiggy, 20 Jan 2009

I appreciated the video for its review of table selection and use of the HUD, but I felt like the play was a little weak and too HUD-reliant. There were spots where it would have been worthwhile to take some notes (I noticed one where a player bluffed a limped pot with absolute air, and only a few hands later you checked down and folded a pair to a small river bet by the same player). I realize that you are using table selection and tight/aggressive play to push your biggest edges, but I felt like in doing so some other edges were passed up entirely.

I guess it's nice to be reminded that you want loose-passives to your right and don't want loose-aggressives to your right. But to leave a every table that doesn't have the perfect permutation of players in relation to your seat position, even at $25NL where it's possible to find some pretty great tables, is crazy. You'll end up playing so many fewer hands in a given amount of time. You'll constantly be pulling up a new table, getting enough hands to get a feel for your opponents, leaving that table, and repeating. I appreciate the importance of table selection, but this is ridiculous. Oh, and I have some more specific comments/beratements below. 4:16 & 10:40 You do realize you can just check from the BB to see a flop for free, right? You won't play AJ by calling? Only by raising or folding? What about checking, like you actually do in the hand? 18:30 Fold KJ pf to a limp just because you don't have stats on anyone yet? Really?? Do you fold AA pf with no stats? Wouldn't want to get in trouble with it postflop. 20:45 Fold T8s to pf min-raise? 24:10 Open-fold T8s in SB?? 25:58 "And 58 on the button is not a hand worth playing at this level." At what level is 58 on the button generally a hand worth playing? 26:04 "Now TT again, this is um... a hand we will play I guess from here. From the small blind position." You guess?? How good a player do you think this guy to your left is? I realize position is important, but this is ridiculous. 27:14 "Very difficult to play against even the weakest players when they're right to your left like that." What??? 28:34 Open raising from SB w/ 43o now, huh? Is that what they call "changing gears"? 34:16 "We're gonna raise one up, just so we have some hands to play on the video." Genius. Of course, you have no interest in playing either Q9s or JT which you're dealt at the other table at the same time as your precious J9. Have you ever played a hand out of the blinds? Oh yeah, I forgot about your 43. Sorry.

“advice good, style bad” by germansupreme, 05 May 2008

dude, ur playing 6 handed and ur a total nit. i have no idea how u make money playing that tight. if just one person drops from ur table, the blinds are eating u up. ur playing as tight as i do at a 10 person table at a 6 handed table. i think ur advice is great, but i think ur gameplay could use a little more agression.

This is a good video, which highlights the importance of table selection and seat selection too. A must see in my opinion for any micro stakes player.

i apologize for not posting a review. i have seen this 3 times now, and am getting a good bit out of it. your details of seat selection are a huge plus! what/who to look for, where to put them...which stacks will be available to capitalize upon. all good. plus, the bonus feature of the PT session review. thanks for investing the time, jym.

 “Pickin' tables” by sarbox68, 16 Sep 2007

Thx for this. Two main take aways... the biggest of which was picking a target for the table, without which it's better to look for another table. The other was trying for seat placement to get the LP to the right and avoid LAG to the left. Their were a couple of interesting hands to, esp given the limited play on two tables. Def most helpful for the guidance on table selection and position once u r there.

 “HUD 101” by Bizu, 15 Sep 2007

Thanks for the video! Showed how to use HUD stats at beginner lvl (I haven't use it before) -whether a table is profitable so sit in -making sure the player on your right is loose enough to fatten your stack -stand up if your left player is too loose (calls too much)

“Very Good” by Kmind, 15 Sep 2007

Very good video, TJ. Already up 2 stacks using your advice. I really appreciate you taking the time to do something like this.
