Simple Guide to Creating Videos

Poker Videos have become more and more popular as a tool for teaching, personal coaching, and peer review. Creating videos can help players of all abilities improve their play and help others to do the same. These videos are not difficult to create, just follow this step-by-step guide and you will be on your way to improving. All you need is a microphone or headset and you are on your way!

Step 1-Downloading Recording Software

Visit http://www.techsmith.com/download/camtasiatrial.asp to download your free 30-day trial copy of Camtasia Studio, a program that will allow you to actively record video and audio from your computer. Install the program and run the software.

Step 2-Setting Up a Recording Session

You should now see this Welcome Screen:

You are presented with 3 options, if you have yet to record anything the first option will aid you in doing so.

After choosing next/continue this screen will appear:

You now have 3 options, usually option 1 or 3 will suffice, and option 1 allows you to only record a certain are of the screen by dragging the cursor. This option is best if your tables do not cover the entire screen as it will help keep the file size as small as possible. This is important in that it greatly reduces production/upload/download times.

One you have determined the area of the screen you wish to be recorded you must now decide whether or not to record audio. The best way to record audio is through a headset. Using a stand-alone microphone will make your volume vary due to your mouth moving closer/further from the microphone. A headset keeps the microphone the same distance from your mouth, making you much more audible.

Above are the audio options. Make sure your source is the correct microphone. Some computers will read the internal microphone and not the one you are currently using. You can see in the 3 picture the green audio bar that appears. This is how you can test your audio. If you do not see the bar spike when you talk make sure the correct microphone has been selected and that the input levels are at their highest possible settings.

Once you are done with all of your audio and video settings begin recording by hitting “Finish” on the following screen:

Step 3-Recording Your Video

Now you are prepared to start recording. Press the red Record button and you will be actively recording all motion on your screen:

Once recording you will see the following:

On this screen you have a few options and some hints. Make sure when you talk that the right-audio bar is lighting up, this means you are also recording audio. Also, you can pause, stop, or delete the video as well as hide the help-bar. You will only be recording what is inside the four brackets; however, you are able to move items in and out of the area.

When finished with the recording hit “stop” on the bottom of the help-bar

Step 4-Reviewing and Saving Your Video

The first screen you will see is the “Compressing Audio” status-bar. One this process is finished (usually only a few minutes) the “Recorder Preview” will appear, you can watch your video from this recorder before you decide whether or not to produce your recording. Make sure your audio is at a high enough volume and that the recording appears clearly because production can take upwards of 3 hours. Once you have reviewed your recording save it under a file name you will remember

Step 5-Producing Your Video

First you are given three options, to produce your video, choose the second option and hit “OK”.

You will then see a screen with three more options. The best option here is to choose “Custom Production Settings”. Click “Next” and you will be given options on the type of video file to produce your video in. Some files produce faster than others, while some have better quality. It is my recommendation to use “WMV- Windows Media streaming video”. Click “Next”.

On the next four screens Camtasia’s default settings generally work the best. Under Profiles select “Camtasia Studio Best Quality and File Size (Recommended)” and under Video Size choose “Largest Video Size (Recommended)”

The next two screens will need no adjusting, unless you would like to change the title of the video or choose some post-production option such as your video opening upon completion or being able to see the production results.

Once “Finish” is selected the following screen will appear. When the rendering reaches 100% your video is completely finished and is ready for viewing in a program such as Windows Media Player. This process can take in excess of 2-3 hours depending on file size.
