Poker Psychology Introduction
Poker is just a game of math and probabilities, right? While it is true that you need to develop and tweak your strategy side of the game, there is another aspect some don't pay enough attention to. If you are great on the analytical side, picking up reads, adjusting and applying what you learn, that isn't all you need to become a successful poker player. You need the poker psychology.
Downswings, your bankroll, bad sessions, or just generally having bad luck can effect your mind much more than you think. It can lead to tilt, poor bankroll management, taking shots, and an overall sense of failure (also broken keyboards!) It isn't just poker, either. You have to be in a good mindset in your every day life, as well. If you are having problems with your girlfriend, at school, parents, etc, it could certainly effect your decisions on the felt.
What this Poker Psychology category will attempt to do is bring the psychology side of poker right to the players. There is not enough content today that talks about how to keep your mind focused on the long term instead of short term results. Every serious poker player knows that eventually you just won't be able to do anything right. You will eventually run worse than you ever thought possible, and it is during this time that many players, even those who are very dangerous at the table, break down and find themselves busto. Many of the mistakes made could have been avoided.
I wouldn't consider the psychology aspect of poker to be minor. You shouldn't think that while learning the game you need to cram as much strategy into your head at once, leaving no room for studying your mind. Poker Psychology is a very large part of developing into a great player. Without these mind skills, you can and will eventually lose sight of the long term and become results oriented. And when this happens you are not playing your best.
