Tournament life refers to your current standing in the tournament and more specifically, the fact you still are in the tournament. As long as you have any chips, you still have a tournament life and you should do everything in your ability to preserve it.
Example: I knew I had a pretty strong hand, but I erred on the side of caution iin an attempt to preserve my tournament life.
