The last person to
act on any particular betting round is said to have
position on everyone else, or to be In
Position. This means that he is
able to see the
action of every player before him prior to deciding his
action, which is typically a huge advantage.
Additionally, to have "
position" on someone means that you are on his left, such that you
act after him on most hands. Exceptions occur when one player is in the blinds where
position typically reverses for a hand.
Example: After flopping a weak pair, I found out that it was much easier to control the size of the pot when I was IP.
