2.2k hands @100NL fr, +$275

BR $6680 weeeeee!

Following my BRM plan I made at the beginning I should now be playing 1/2FR regularly and be shotting 1/2 6max on occasion. I´ll be staying at 0.5/1 until the end of the month and then overthink my BRM plan again for the following reasons:

- I´m curious if I can maintain a winrate >2.5ptBB/100 over a solid sample, until OP start I was 1.8 longterm

- I dont wanna switch sites, since I have a good deal at CDPoker and like the software, but iPoker 1/2 FR is contaminated with rakeback- and FPP-pros.

- I´m not confident in my 6max game. I could probably beat 100NL FR, but I doubt I could do a bigger winrate than at FR. I´m not ready for 1/2 6max yet

- I´d like to have a somewhat deeper BR to avoid tilting/scared money issues. My biggest improvement this month was to learn to really think things through before I act, to strictly concentrate on ranges and ev´s, not being results oriented and to always look ahead and not letting yesterdays beats phase me. If you scroll up you´ll see that I went on wild 3 BI monkeytilt once, but I did not get in this chronic semi-tilt state of mind that cost me so much moniez in the past.

- I have exams and 3 weeks of business training in Feb/March and will therefore not have the time to study the game in depth. I don´t want to advance in limits without advancing as a player. This somewhat correlates with tilting issues, when the next downswings hits at 1/2 and I´m stressed the tilting monster may come out again.

On todays session: I had a brutal start, getting stacked twice with set over set and one rivered boat over boat. Again I ran nittish 13/11/4, I tightened up in EP due to tons of shortstacks, still I´m the only regular player with a two-digit PFR. Att.2 steal was 25%, which is okay I guess and should be near optimal for todays table conditions. I´m looking for opportunities to squeeze for the past 3 weeks and did okay, funny side note: none of the regs has adjusted yet.

#1 SB is 13/8/3 regular, he stacked me earlier with the mentioned boat over boat, no history beside that. My image is solid, river bluff raises are very uncommon and I doubt he´s betting weak to induce a raise. I´m basically turning my hand into a bluff here, since I´m repping Kx/QJ and I have no idea if its a good play.

#6 This one is interesting. BTN is 15/6/2.1 semi reg, haven´t played him for a while. He´s kinda tricky, I folded to two possible floats before. I had a hard time putting him on a hand, he could have KQ, JJ-TT, 88, 22 and spades. KQ/88/22 raise flop a large % of the time, so he´s most likely to hold spades or tries to rep them w/ 2nd pair. C/c or b/f river?

Poker yesterday:

Session#1 6max: 4tabled 100NL sh at Party for +$150 and I´m finally in the green on party´s sh tables for this month. Ran 20/16 and played solid poker.

#1 I was lost. No solid reads yet. UTG crai came really unexpected, since it didnt make sense to me. What hands are going for a c/r on such a drawy board? Getting 2:1 I called, figuring to have 9-12 outs

#2 CO is 42/6/1.8, calling tons of flops IP vs me and betting any turn when checked to. I already c/r´ed him twice and he gave up. It´s probably not the best play in a vacuum, but given our history he must give me lots of weak holdings, since I started defending vs his floats with this line. Checking river sucks.

Session#2 full ring. I played bad. - $360

#4 MP2 is 24/17/1.7, MP3 is unknown 19/6/2. I´ve been 3betting MP2 a ton the last days, especially with a caller I squeezed a lot. Both started calling lighter, I showed down 77 vs 66 when MP2 and I checked thru a 3bet pot and gave up with a missed AQ. Flop check to rep a missed mid pp and to extract a bet from TT/JJ/88. Turn bet is huge, maybe too big for value bet and since my hand is underrepped I had to shove.

wow. last nights full ring session went like crazy. idk why, but suddenly the nits were bluffing the shit out of me. First losing session, where I werent outflopped but outplayed by players who had never got out of line/caught. I was stunned and quit before I could spew more moniez away, net loss $70 coz I made my biggest pot for this month as well.

Since being played felt so bad, my neighbour, who dropped like 4BI at 1/2, and I decided to get drunk fast and killed a bottle of vodka within an hour and then started to play $3 HellKat SNG´s on Party. These are sooooooooooooo fun! For those of u who havent heard of it, HellKats have a set time limit, when the time runs out first 3 in chips are paid. Gotta think about an adequate strategy to beat those, until now I´ll play them to spew around when I´m wasted Very Happy lost about $20 there, tho I finished a couple ITM.

BR $6520

#1 Villian is 14/11/3 who dropped back down to 100NL after playing 1/2 and 2/4 regularly. His range is something like AQ+, clubs, 88,99. I think my line okay repping 9x/88/A9 folding out anything but boats. Unfortunately he had it this time

On yesterdays session:

800 hands of 100NL 6max for a net loss of $300, received $180 RB on IPN,

BR $6400

Not a nice end of the month but w/e. Tried iPoker 6max at first, but the tables there were horrible nitty and filled with shortstacks. Went over to Party and found 4 tables with at least one 40/4 type of guy, but had no chance to pull a profit. I think I played pretty well, especially since the TAGs stay out of each others way as long as there´s a donator in the middle. Tho it sucks to pay the donk I´m fine with my decisions, got my money in good.

#1 UTG+1 ran 90/11/1.8 for 120 hands, CO is 34/22/0.8 over 150. I´m happy that I got it in.

Achievements this month:

- I took care of this OP and therefore went thru PT and looked at my hands after every session
- No huge tilt affiars beside one HU session (doesnt show up in pt as HU, since it was a new 6max table)
- I thought poker
- My approach to this game has totally changed. I´m looking forward after every session, losing streaks dont phase me all that much anymore, coz I can either indentify them as coolers or mistakes I learned from

Goals for Feb:
- Continue beating 100NL fr, start beating 100NL 6max
- Work on my adjustements and player reading. playing less tables and thinking about my actions I´ve found myself in loads of situations, where I couldn´t determine on which level opponent is thinking and make bad plays caused by misjudging (is this a word??) his level of thinking. I´m outthinking myself frequently.

I seem to have the exact same problem determining what level my opponent is thinking on as well. I also have a tendency to get too fancy trying to level an opponent who may not be thinking very deep. Oh well, I'm learning as I go.
As for you play, Hand #1 is fine.
#2 I often call IP and play the flop. OOP I like to get it in pre and let the chips fall where they may. If I think he has a read that I'm 3betting light I especially like to play a flop cause he'll stack off lighter than usual. Against an unknown I don't mind the pre-push though.
#3, Raise flop more to make later streets easier to play. His stack size makes it hard for you on a bad turn card. I like the b/f line here, but you can't fold to his short ass push over. I plan to see A9 or A3 here alot as well as plenty of bluffy air.

You and I seem to be at similar stages in bankroll and poker development right now. I sure wish I had your poker bonuses and Rakeback to draw off of, but alas I play in the US. $600 in a month is awesome, though mine would be less since I can only get about 15K-18K hands in per month.
Congrats on a good month developmentally and a decent month with poker/variance. From hands you posted the win rate will certainly come up in the next month or two.

Yea, leveling myself is probably a huge leak. I went thru my last 10k hands in poker ev and, surprise surprise, the vast majority of pots lost in terms of sklansky bucks were against unknowns whom I read wrong. Guess I´m gonna change my default approach to this sort of situation from "not giving anyone credit until proven otherwise" to "give them credit until they happen to disqualify themselves or I get a solid read" and see how it works out.

Played a session of 3k hands at 100NL fr yesterday for +$60

BR $6586

I didn´t run all that good and the tables were more taggy than usual, making it possible to play 17/14/3.5 fun poker.

#1 Villian appeared to be stupid within the 2.5 orbits since I sat down, seing tons of flops and taking KJo once too far.

Weeeeee peoples!
Tonight was the night u catch once a month where all the pieces fit together. Deep stacked donks, running good and, most important, making non-standard plays in the right moment. Finished +$615 pushing my BR to

BR $7201

I started off like crazy monkey wild and suddenly dropped almost one BI but got that back when regs started playing back at me

#1 Villian is 13/8 regular against whom my image is apeshit. I´ve been 3betting him quite light, coz Im a monkey. He 4bet shoved on me twice before at another table and I gave up instantly

CO shows: Eight of Hearts Nine of Hearts
Hero shows: King of Spades King of Hearts

Hero wins $189.8 ( won +$95.4 )
CO lost -$94.40
BTN lost -$3.00

Later on I switched gears and ran like 12/10/3.3, mainly because tables were were extremely stationy and regular players began to make kinda loose calls vs me.

#2 Non-standard. BTN is 8/3, his 3betting range is QQ+, AK, AQ at best. 4betting would have folded out anything but KK, so I decided to flat his raise. Happened at the end of the session, where he views me as somewhat TAG (if he even pays attention to it)

#3 No.3 occured after 3 or 4 orbits. It´s probably the hand, where I lost any respect. UTG+1 is 23/17, CO 22/6 which made this a great opportunity to squeeze. I had no clue, what CO could have had and I felt there was a good chance he´s simply annoyed of me raising him off his limp/calls. W/e, even vs 66-JJ, AJ, AQ I´m a 2:1 dog making this call still -EV in a vacuum.

feb 3rd 2008:

Climbing a mountain in the early morning was soooooo sick. We started at 4:30am and it took us like two hrs until we reached the peak at 1200 above sl, right on time to see the sun rise. It was awesome, I havent seen a sunrise for 5yrs. as promised, more picks to keep my interested readers entertained Wink

Poker:
2.6k hands of 100NL fr for a net of +$330 and I bought a datamining- and tableselection tool for Party for $30

BR $7501

I can´t deny that I´ve been running quite good lately, but I feel like my game has improved since the new year started. I´m fully confident in beating 100NL full ring and have come to a point, where I can play any table aviable on iPoker, I don´t run into player anymore who cause me trouble. Next goal is to improve in 3bet pots, where I´m probably leaking. That should be fixed before I move up.

geez, I really fucked things up yesterday. Violating my new rule, I grinded just for the sake of grinding, unfocused/distracted and sloppy. Instead of browsing the web/jacking off/calling girls/getting drunk I decided to burn my hard earned moniez
AND IT FUCKING MAKES ME SICK!!!!!

Walking home from the gym this afternoon I thought about that poker shit and why last night went so wrong and why I can´t beat this fucking limit for more than 2.1BB/100 long term. There are a couple of reasons I destilled from all the thoughts I had. Beside that I´m a bad player it´s simply the lack of discipline and emotional stability. It´s the sessions I play to get my mind clear. Sometimes after a long day when the fucking world fucks me up I set up 14-tables and grind along, only to prevent my mind from thinking about stuff thats fucking annoying me/bothering me.
Yea, why not doing sports instead? Because I already spend 3 days a week at the gym for like 2 - 3 hrs and go out running for 1 - 1.5 hrs the days in between.
Fuck me, I need to stop this. The sloppy play syndrome is probably caused by playing overrolled quite often. I got so used to blowing $100, since I "blew" it a hundred times when I was ahead, that I somewhat lost the feeling for the moniez at the table. Dont get me wrong, I want to win as bad as everybody else (maybe too bad sometimes) and I fucking hate losing, but when I´m in bad mood I kinda think "poop you, I´ll get it back u´re bad fuck u blah blah" and suddenly lose focus on all that long term thingy.

To fix this I´m gonna use the word "fuck" as often as possible tonight and will jump into 1/2NL now. Lets see if more money at risk will make me a more disciplined player. I´m still healthy rolled for 1/2 but IF I become scared money I´ll drop back, IF I continue to spew money all over the place, I´ll drop back down.

On last session itself: I dropped $330. I was grinding along and breaking even until this fucking fuck hand occured

Step back and think about what you would tell someone else if they were in the same situation, and try to use it on yourself. You give good advice, and you know what you should do. Variance is a bitch.

Thanks for the support. I need it more than ever before after a small session at 1/2. I actually did what I would tell others to do ( I won´t tell them to move up, but thats another story) and played less tables and quit when I lost focus/emotional stability.

200NL went well, I weren´t sloppy and played not my best but definetly a good game. 200NL tabkes are pretty much like 100NL with >35% shortstacks <30BB, standard 14/6 nits and the occasional donk. Didn´t make any non-standards with no strong reads on anyone yet. I lost $230 and quit after hand #3

I´m still healthy rolled for 1/2 but IF I become scared money I´ll drop back, IF I continue to spew money all over the place, I´ll drop back down.

meh, I did it for a reason. I didnt move up to recover losses or because "these 100NL donks put beats on me". I decided to after thinking about it deeply. I didnt jump into 1/2 for any tilty reason.

It was one of our countless BRM threads that made me draw the conclusion moving up now will be +eV. I don´t remember who posted it, but the threads tenor was like "playing overrolled indicates that u´re kinda risk prone".
I struggled making quality decisions and played sloppy or, in other words, didn´t consider the risks I took objectively.

Like I said, Im healthy rolled, so there´s no danger of going busto and I beat 100NL for >2BB/100 for 4 months or so. I´d have moved up anyway and now I did it with the additional benefit of getting my feet back on the ground and having respect for game/oppostion again.

And I´ve found my inner peace. I´m doing well. Took beats and didn´t tilt or quit before I could do so. I´m eager to play and am focused, there´s so much more information now to absorbe, so many unknown regnittags I need to get a read on and it´s interesting to observe how my stress level reacts to double sized pots (+ and -). My hands became wet when over $600 moved to my seat, poker is exciting again and I´m totally fine with my decision. If things wont work out I can drop down everytime.

One comment on last nights hands: #2 was probably the most retarded misclick I made this month. I already pulled the sliderbar to the right and then hit call accidentially.

what site(s) are you at? Also, what have you noticed in terms of differences between the levels? I figure you will be the best to ask since you have just moved up after a pretty good stint at 100NL.

1.2k hands at 200NL for a net profit of $260 yay yay

BR $7672

Tonights session went like ok. To be honest, I didn´t play all that much thinking poker, but it wasn´t necessary anyway. Found a 50/5 type of guy at most tables and spend the most time testing the waters against dudes who seemed to be regular players. I´ve played one hand horribly, talking myself into this stupid play test him. Shame on me.

Funny I can´t see your post in the thread, but in the "topic review" below Wink

I´m playing on iPoker. To be honest, I haven´t encountered any huge differences between 100NL and 200NL so far, but 3k hands is a small sample obv. I haven´t adjusted yet, I´m still running 13/11/4 and didnt feel like I was completely off track with these stats. I´m gonna post detailed about the differences after 10 or 20k hands (unless I have to move down Wink )

Day 3 of 200NL. I hope this isn´t like quitting smoking where u aren´t over it as long you´re counting the days Wink Finished $360 up

BR $7592

So far the difference between 100NL and 200NL is non-existant. The average stats for regulars hover around 14/6 which is quite easy to play against. I´ve run into one guy giving me trouble, but we´ve grinded 100NL together and have history. At early evenings, when there is little traffic above 1/2 midstakes regs show up, but I haven´t got involved with one of them in big pots. My adjustements so far are marginal, preflop stats are similar to 100NL as is agression. I´m playing less tables and am more focused and I hope I can maintain this level of concentration.

#1 Villian is regular nittag, too small a sample to have useful stats. Given his passiveness I didn´t see a chance to get away. C/f turn is out of the question with no reads, he played this very well.

#2 Meh, probably fucked up on my part. No reads on SB other than he seems nitty. I ran 16/15, so he might be tired of me running over the table. My thought process was like the following: Assuming he´s nitlike opening his calling range (I´ve met very few persons who adjust their 3betting range when I´m active pre) his flop range is like AT+, TT, QJ, all of them exept AJ will probably c/r. 3betting flop may blow out AJ and AQ so we call. Turn is kinda good and bad news. AJ caught up, but AQ is ready to stack off now. We have 30% equity vs {AT+, TT, QJ}, $150 in the pot villian has $90 left. Pushy pushy, no?

#3 I must admit, that I seriously considered folding KK. No joke. UTG+2 is known ultra nit from 100NL, his stats dropped from 9/4 to 8/3, he may be even more scared at 1/2. I´ve played 5k+ hands with him and he NEVER 4bets anything but AA.

reading thru the interwebs I´ve found a nice quote

Quote:

from http://timharford.com/2006/05/the-poker-machine/
it´s a very long article, but definetly worth reading!

Day 4, dropped $310

BR $7282

I´m not running good at all. I´ve logged 7k hands at 200NL so far and my w@SD is full 10% below 100NL long term. I´m either calling way too much or run bad. w2SD is constant at 24%, so I blame variance.

I think I´m doing okay. VPIP and PFR both increased full 2% compared to 100NL, WWSF went up 4%, Att.2Steal grew to 33%. I guess this comes due to playing fewer tables and therefore reading hands better, not missing opportunities to steal anymore, opening up in the CO and HJ and slightly tighter opponents. Games haven´t become much more aggressive, execpt some OOP floats (lol) and annoying minraises/min-c/r over my cbets.

I finally figured out how to put a huge edge over the nittags in words: Raise preflop, cbet 100%, shut down if called. I don´t know, why 200NL regular nits have such a huge leak, but basically none of them floats their small/mid pp´s IP. I played one guy last night who appeared to float me OOP, but given his strong call-c/r line I gave him credit everytime.

Realizing this implies two more adjustements:
- Float my small/mid pp´s IP vs PFR>8
- Call mid sc´s/AXs IP on ocassion.
This is probably slightly -ev in a vacuum, but given my tiny vpip/pfr gap of 2.7% my cold calls are poorly balanced

Blind play
First off, I suck at blind defense, at 1/2NL even more. Fold SB to steal is at 97%, Fold BB to steal 87% and I that´s a leak. I need to figure out how to plug this, BUT: how do I defend my SB vs 20-30BB shortstacks? It kinda sucks, I guess my BB could be running okay, since I´m actively looking for spots to squeeze and do pretty well, but SB play sucks. In BvB I´ve experimented with two adjustements:
- Tightening up from SB vs anyone >12/6. Yea, this might seem weak, but I suck 1-on-1 OOP. I´m willing to pay $1 if it keeps me from getting into trouble
- BB is quite opposite, b/c everyone sucks OOP. I ain´t 3betting all that much to defend my BB in BvB, I´d rather call and float w/ 22-88, AXs, KTs+, KJo+, sc´s occ. Works great and it keeps most aggros throwing money at me all night instead of slowing down in face of frequent 3bets.

#1 Villian is 16/6 regular. We´ve run into each other a couple of times and he seems to play back at me.

#2 BB sucks. Quite loose , check-raising/minraising my cbets all night. Didn´t 3bet flop, b/c I didnt want to blow out 66-88 AND b/c I needed a diamond or overcard to get him off any random J. His turnbet is so weak and he tanked before he called. On river I figured that he a) doesnt look like he had a flush/boat, given his weakish turnplay (a check on turn would have actually slowed me down) and b) that I could get him off any J and maybe a 5, which is unlikely anyway

Day X, I stopped counting Very Happy

Played 1.6k hands 200NL fr for a net +$83

BR $7905

I´m gonna post only a single hand, where I got owned hard. SB is soemthing like 16/6 or so, I have been very active in HJ/CO/BTN but didn´t showdown any junk. Flop minraise could be anything from a random J, FD, 22,88 to 66,77,99,TT trying to make a stand. With the FD on board his turncheck looked like a one pair hand, vs which I had good equity and of which I´m folding a good portion out.

So after breaking even all night I surprisingly managed to to pull some profit. Chased a fish i ran over on monday to 400NL and nitted around there, unfortunately I didn´t have the opportunity to take moniez off him. 200NL was horrible the first 2 hrs, I was getting raised and squeezed and c/r´ed and couldnt catch a single flop. Sucks, when ur image pays off and ur sitting there with like J-high. It paid off later, so I´m not bitching around here.

As requested, I will from now on go through hand ranges in every hand I post. I´m sure not only wes and others but I will benefit from that as well. Thanks for the suggestion, I became quite lazy analyzing my own hands lately.

So here we go:

#1 Opp is 19/6, if he pays attention my image must be spewy. His range for calling preflop is something like 22-JJ (maybe even QQ idk, he´s passive), ATs+, AQo+, QJs+ (maybe T9s) and few random sc´s/suited aces. I doubt he cares about my hand, from MP my range is 22+, A9s+, AJo+, QJs+. Flop is standard cbet, planning to get it in if possible, b/c he will never ever go nuts with the flopped boat or quads, but he will definetly overplay TT-QQ. His raise screams TT-QQ, he´s kinda frustrated and I have shown down junk, a shove might get a hero call from him me thinks

Flop: Five of Spades Two of Diamonds Five of Clubs ($19, 2 players)
Hero bets $15, MP2 raises to $40, Hero raises to $345, MP2 goes all-in $319.95, Hero calls $14.95

Turn: Queen of Spades ($738.9, 2 players)

River: Ace of Hearts ($738.9, 2 players)

Final Pot: $735.90
Hero shows: Ace of Diamonds Ace of Spades
MP2 shows: Jack of Diamonds Jack of Spades

MP2 lost -$367.95

#2 Ok, this one is the prime example for basic setfarming/implied odds play. I´m no good in explaining things, but I´ll go into detail and try to outline the basics. Villian here is 20/3/1.4, a great target to play pp´s for set value. His raising range very tight QQ+, AK. I´ve seen him limp-calling KK so we might even discount AK.
Effective stacks are $200 (I have the shorter stack). We can safely assume that he will stack off 70% the time we hit. Taking into account, that I have a ton of small to medium pots vs him with air this might be even higher.
Preflop we stand to win $210 (preflopraise + stack) and have to pay $10, thats 21:1 implied odds. Our set hits one in 9, so we lose $10 8 times for a loss of $80 and will win $210*70% (remember he´s stacking off only 70% the time) one time for a profit of $147. Now deduct $80 from $147 and our call shows a gigantic expectation of $67. Hope this helps

#3 Next one. BTN is a good friend of mine who has been killing 1/2 and owns 2/4 atm. He runs like 12/9 and knows I like to squeeze a lot. His button range is wide 22+, A5s+, A9o+, 78s+, JTs+, KJs and my 3betting range is something like TT+, AQ+, kinda tight since I really dont like to play vs him oop. His call suggests JJ+, AQ+, KQ, he will 4bet AK most of the time. I´m not sure if he´s 4betting KK. I lead flop b/c I doubt he would try to steal w/ JJ-QQ and to put a decision on any K.

Quick update:

Played a tiny 700 hands session 200NL and to my surpsise I showed a profit when I went thru PT. +$70. Also I payed some unknown dude $10 for telling me who my new avatar is. Definetly worth those ten bucks, I love her, gonna marry her and make lots of babies with her. Check her out:

BR $8780

My BR is skyrocketing at the moment and it doesn´t seem like I´m running extremely hot by any means. I´m really scared of the next cooler, not b/c I might lose some $$$, but I fear the tiltmonster, which is actually the "playing B-game"-monster. Last nights session began quite cold and I recognized how I began to play tighter and more passive. U know these "he calls me anyway and I can´t hit a flop for my life tonight"-moments. Since I recognized it I forced myself to keep on playing my 14/11/cbet 90% game and everything went well.

From April on my grant for university will run out and it seems like I have to close the income gap with poker. I already have a part time job, which I really enjoy and getting a second job will be def -ev. So I´m officially going semi-pro from 04/08. I´m very blessed that my parents will pay for my appartement and gas/electricity bills and earn 290EUR/month in my part time job, which is enough to pay for food and my cell phone and internet bills. I need poker moniez tho, to pay for my hobbies (mountainbiking is soooo expensive), parties/dates and clothing and shoes. Given that I´m not the type of guy who´s fine with 200NL and I WANT TO PLAY 3/6 by the end of the year I have a conflict between not cutting down my spending habits and growing my roll. I´ve figured out a nice way to hedge my poker income tho, my deal brings 30% RB, $500 per 100k FPP (=28k hands@200NL) plus occassional reload Bonus every 4 months or so.
My plan is the following: poker winnings and RB will be used to increase my roll while I will withdraw the 100k FPP and the reload Bonus to cover unexpected expenses, like fixing my car, paying for insurance, buying new airmax whatever.

Another weird side note: When I started my session today I got an instant message from my neighbour who lurked around FTR, sending me a link to post by Cocco_Bill, where Cocco plays a 6k pot @10/20 6max vs a guy called "jockesv". One of the regular 1/2 full ring TAGs at iPoker has exactly the same name. Yea, lame story, sorry for stealing ur time Wink

Hands:

#1 Opponent is 12/6/1.4 regular, I 3bet him 3 or 4 times within 15 mintes or so and he always gave up pre or on flop. His range for calling pre might be something like 99+, AJs+, AQo+, KQs, since the table is short and my image isn´t the greatest and he will have position. Flop is standard, turn was tough OOP. If I bet I doubt I could take a shove, tbh I planned to c/f. His check was confusing, his range is weightened towards 99,TT, AKcc or KQ, he could be sloplaying JJ-AA as well. Now what to do on river? Interesting thing is, that we both have approximately identical ranges, which means that leading would turn my hand into a bluff, but this is a great spot to induce a bluff. I´m kinda drunk right now, but this "identical ranges"-thingy will be on my mind for the next days, maybe I can figure some XTR-theorem like
" If you and villian have appr. identical ranges, you should be more apt to induce bluffs OOP and less apt to bluff IP" or something. Check out the hand

Second attempt to update. I´ve made $460 tonight, aiming at 10k now
weeeeeee!!!
BR $9240

Nothing spectacular happened tonight, I was unfocused due to a bad hang over and quit after 500 hands.
Last night was extreme fun, we visisted a local brewery and got wasted tasting thru all different kinds of beer.

Since no interesting occured tonight I´m gonna drop some random thoughts about bluffing instead. Idk who´s lurking around here, I might post this in the BC or FR forums as well.

As a total newbie I took bluffing as making big bets with total air, when there´s no other chance to win the pot. Of course my bluffs were total spew, little did I know about how to bluff and more importantly why I´m bluffing.
Referring to ISF and the recent discussion around his style of teaching I´m not gonna talk about how u should bluff but try to line out why u should. When u get the "why", u can figure out the "how" on your own.

First off, we don´t bluff to win a pot. We don´t even play poker to win pots, we play to win moneyz b/c we love $$$.
It is possible to play a winning game without ever bluffing, but guess what? You can win more, when you´re bluffing in the right spots. Now there are 3 different ways to explain the necessity of bluff plays in order to lift your ptBB/100.

First approach "game theory":
GT teaches us, why bluff and steal plays can be profitable. Imagine you´re HU seeing a board of
2Diamond 8Diamond T Spade JSpade 3Diamond
and you are first to act.
From the action so far u read your opponent for an overpair. Now u are betting 100% flushes, assume a random pot X and u bet out full pot. From villians perspective it´s an trivial easy fold, his expectation on his call is
eV = 1*(-X) + 0*(2X) = -X

Lets now get tricky and lead out 75% flushes and 25% total air. Whats villians expectation now?
eV = 0.75(-X) + 0.25*(2X) = -0.25X

So now, even if villian KNOWS we bluff 25% of the time, it´s impossible for him adjust. Obv this is an horrible simplified example, but u may get the point.
For further infos read
http://www.econlib.org/library/Enc/GameTheory.html
or browse http://www.gametheory.net/

Second approach: Range balance
You may have noticed, that the top players here, like gabe, sauce123, ISF and others ALWAYS think, talk, discuss and dream in hand ranges. At the bottom line it comes back to game theory, but it´s a different approach to identify spots to bluff. Bluffs are essential to balance your ranges. If u think thinking in ranges is rocket science read ISF´s blog until u get it.
From this point of view we need to bluff on occassion to balance our ranges in certain situations. Our main goal is to have optimal balanced ranges in every situation we encounter, to deny our opponent to play optimal vs us.

Stop for a second and ask yourself, with which range do u check/raise turn after check/calling the flop? I bet it´s something like set+ for most of u. Whats ur range for shoving a certain river? 2nd nuts+? If villian picks up on this we have just allowed him to play near optimal, so figure out how to balance wisely.

Third approach "incentives"
This will be something new. I´ve read thru S.Levitt´s "Freakonomics" lately and there´s another approach to analyze your game on 2nd level. Don´t get me wrong, the basic mechanics are still game theory and expected value of decisions, I´m just trying to see things from a different point of view, one that hasn´t been mentioned yet in strats and post I´ve read so far.
Everyone at the poker table has a strictly economic mindset, and I mean everyone. Stations, maniacs, nits, TAGGs w/e, everybody responds to certain incentives. While a typical stations incentive might be to pass time and avoid aggressive confrontations and the maniacs incentive is gambling, having fun and putting pressure on others our incentive is to make money by making quality decisions.
Well, what incentives do u offer other regular players to play vs you, if u are known to play nothing but teh nuts? Right, none. While bluffing in the right spots can show a positive expectation in itself, we are now offering the opposition to win a pot from us now and then and thats a strong incentive to play vs us.

Alright short update. I´m really really tired. I´m on business training since monday and have to get up at 530 am. Dude, thats right in the middle of the night, I´m sitting in the office like a zombie until 10 am or so. Will be working on workflow optimizing the next 3 weeks, never did that before, we´ll see how it works out. One thing I´ve learned so far: I can´t spend the rest of my life on a 9 to 5. I mean....I can´t sit quiet and focused for more than 2 hrs ( poker is the only exception)

I played 1.3k hands since saturday and dropped $380 plus a net loss of $33 at FTR-MIRC-5NL_CRAZYASSFUCKSHITNESS which was so fun.

BR $8810

I feel like I won´t get to play all that much the next weeks. Sucks, but therefore I´ll be hard on the grind in april again.

Received $69 RB on wednesday

Resumeé for feb:

I moved up to 200NL and did pretty well, actually I did better than at 100NL. Due to playing less tables I played solid poker compared to what I did before. I must say that my adjustements were marginal, playing less tables let me recognize more opportunities for non-standards, beside that my discipline improved and I didn´t play all that much when I was tired/drunk/emotional.

Summary February

Hands played: 30,313

Starting BR: $6526
Poker profit: $1,683
Rakeback received: $730
Bonus cleared: 0
Cashouts: 0

total earnings: $2,413

Current BR$8939

2008 totals

Hands played: 65,433
Poker profit: $2,399
Rakeback received: $1,340
Bonus cleared: $600
Cashouts: $400

Total earnings: $4,339

It makes me sad that I won´t get to play much in March. Moving up has given me a new inspiration, I really enjoy playing again and would love to put in 2hrs every night after I come home from the office, but there´s a voice telling me, that I´m better off turning on the tv than to grind b/c I will lose money when I´m tired. I hope that I´ll get used to getting up early in the morning and my biorhythm has adjusted enough that I will be able to play again. W/e, thanks for reading, GL to u all, see ya in mIRC woot woot Wink

I finally got to play some poker tonight Wink ran good and made $277

BR $9216

#1 Villian is 22/6/1.9 and his line is so weird and the analysis depends on his level of thinking. Assume he´s very good for a second, what does my hand look like to him? Either a small flush, a boat, AcX, 89. There aren´t any Q´s in my limping range but he doesnt know that so we´ll add QJs and QTs. What hand goes for a c/r on the river? At first I thought it´s plain stupid to do so, but the Ace on the river hit most of my fd´s and he could expect me to bet it, right? I could be stealing w/ missed draws as well, but why the heck does this guy raise? With his stats and the action so far his range is something like 77, 67, 66, random flush, Qx, AcX and we expect only the boats to raise us here. Given all that folding isn´t out of the question, but we´re getting like 4:1, he only needs to be turning a pair/2pr/flush into a bluff once in 5 to make our call profitable.

While I´m scanning the tables for todays 6max session I´m gonna write about squeeze plays on full ring tables. For most ppl here probably a trivial topic, for me it´s quite new. We´ve all read the chapter in HOH1 where Dan squezes with T4 or something, but he talks about tourney´s and doesn´t go too far into detail. Beside that, it´s a topic where I really think about it myself and becoming a thinking player is my ultimate goal.

I haven´t searched the forums nor the web for articles about it, so the following content is potentially worthless.

We´re assuming a 100NL full ring table, active players w/ 100BB stacks.

There´s a raise from MP1, std TAG with PFR >8, to 4BB and one or two caller in HJ/CO/BTN with VPIP>18.

We´re OTB/SB/BB. I´m treating those 3 position the same way for a simple reason: If we 3bet OTB opponent will assign a wider range to us, but can´t open up too much, b/c he will be oop. If we 3bet from the blinds, villian may open up a bit, b/c he will have postion on us, but cant open up too much, b/c 3bet ranges from the blinds are usually pretty tight.

MP1´s opening range is something like 66+, AJs+, AQo+, KQs for a total of 94 combinations

HJ/CO/BTN´s calling range is 22-TT, 78s+, JTo-KQo, ATs-AJs, AQo for a total of 134 combinations, assuming he´d 3bet anything above that range himself

Our standard 3betting range is, depending on style, JJ+, AK, AQs, which has 56% equity against MP1´s range.

Now, with two caller, there´s 13.5BB in the pot and we raise to 16BB, laying 2.5:1 immediate and 8:1 implied odds, we probably fold out anything but JJ+, AK and AQs.
Note that these hands aren´t in our callers ranges, we assume our HJ/CO/BTN aren´t prone to slowplay premiums preflop.

This means, we fold out 50 combinations or 53% of MP1´s hands for an immediate profit of 13.5BB. The remaining 47% villian calls/raises with a range against which our standard range has 50% equity.

For the sake of simplicity we ignore the times where one caller overcalls our 3bet and changes our equity drastically. (an overcaller with 55-77, JTs has 25% equity. I love pstove)

Let´s see how far we can expand our range to make our 3bet 0ev:

We assume MP1 4bets KK+,12 of the remaining 44 combinations or 12.7% of his total hands, leaving 34.3% where he calls w/ JJ-QQ, AK,AQs.

In case villian 4bets we obv shove KK+ for 0eV and fold anything else for a net loss of 16BB

If MP1 calls, we see a flop with a pot of (16+16+4+4+1.5)BB = 41.5BB against a range of JJ-QQ, AK, AQs

eV = 0.53*13.5BB - 0.127*16BB + 0.343*X*41.5 (!)= 0; where "X" is our equity if called

(I ignore bets on subsequent rounds, b/c it´s getting too complicated and my head is already asploding)

--> eV = .53*13.5BB - .127*16BB + .343*X*41.5BB (!)= 0

5.123 = 14.2345X

X = .36 or 36%

Means our 3betting range needs 36% equity if called to let us break even on this squeeze.

Now play around with Pstove:

39% equity

6,270,457,248 games 0.005 secs 1,254,091,449,600 games/sec

Well, that´s it so far. I´m gonna ask around if one of our math guys can go through this and give me shit if my math wrong, if not, I´ll post this in the full ring forum and hopefully start a discussion on this topic.

I've been re-reading your blog (BTW I wanted to thank you for posting some really quality stuff!) and I think you did a small mistake here on the ranges in pokerstove and you should exclude KK on { KK-JJ, AQs+, AKo } because for you villain would 4bet/push.
Furthermore, I think villain's calling range has to include 77-QQ for set minning ...

Yea you´re right. I actually excluded KK from villians calling range before but somehow messed up the ranges in pstove, thx for the feedback Wink

Like I said earlier, I haven´t got to play much poker the last days. I only got to play tiny sessions w/ 8 tables and therefore made some pretty good plays. Stats are still going up, it seems like I can maintain 16/14/4 long term 8-tabling and drop to 14/12 w/ 9+ tables. I lost track on my BR and just realized that I have spread my moneyz all over the web after doing some xfers for friends and luckboxes, if u read this dave, hit me up when u want to send the rest of ur FT$. Im gonna investigate my true BR size the next days, it´s probably still good above 9k and I must hit at least 10k this month.

#1 Villian here is 14/6/3.5 and we have history. We´ve been tangling a lot at 100NL, he´s imaginative and aggro vs me. This call pre/float tons of flops is my favourite vB line lately. Its just so much better than 3betting, since most sane opponents play very tight OOP when 3bet, but cbet >75% in BvB. I can fold a ton since my calling range is pre is so wide and I can rep anything, while he is OOP with a weak hand mostly. The crux here is his c/c on turn. He rarely plays that line with QX/FD/set. In case he has something like AT/QJ/77 and suspects me to be floating he´d go for a c/r with all the draws out or just lead, FD´s would lead turn as well. His range is weightened towards J9, 98 or a weak TX which will call the river push rarely.

I didnt have a specific note on him regarding this kind of play, but I know he´s pretty straightforward. Qx and a set MUST bet turn with all the draws out there, I could easily hold clubs, 98, J9s, KJ. Given that some Qx and Tx-type hands are in my range as well he will probably lead his 8+outs draws too. This leaves only very weak 2nd pair hands in his range on river, which try to take the pot from my missed SD´s or one pair hands.

Aye, this month sucks so bad. I miss playing poker all night and making money. Instead of getting up at 11am, having lunch and grinding iPoker I now come home from the office, workout for 1.5 hrs and then Im done for the day, ordering a pizza, having a couple of Absolute kurant and go to sleep. Actually, this is the probably most important adjustement I made this year. I simply dont play, when I´m not on top level and thats gonna (hopefully) lift my ptBB/100.

I played a bit last night tho. Tables where pretty bad and for some reason ppl started to 3bet the shit out of me. Didn´t catch a single hand to benefit from their widened ranges and I finished roughly $400 down, of which $200 came from a hand where I shoved a gutter on turn. Gonna post that hand later, no PT here in the office.

I´m seriously considering going pro for a couple of months next year. Spending the past weeks in the office from 9 to 5 doing workflow analysis and optimization I came to the conclusion, that I really don´t want to work in a regular job yet. It´s just... a students life has just too many benefits and if poker can neutralize the only downside (having no solid and regular source of income), why should I take the next step, when it´s actually lowering my level of life quality?

I don´t plan on being a full timer for a long time, I´d rather take 6-12 months off regular life and use that time to widen my horizon, travel around and maybe take the chance to live abroad for half a year or so.

My longterm winrate @100NL was good above 2 ptBB/100 and I have made some major improvements since then, not playing when I´m not on top level being the most important. Since we need a really deep roll when we want to make a living out of this, I´m calculating with 200NL as my main game. I´m fully confident, that I can beat 1/2NL for 2.5ptBB/100 longterm and earn around 1.3k per 30k hands in Bonus and RB.

So 30k hands a month would come out as 2.5*$4*30k/100 = $3k + $1.3k = $4.3k a month playing 30k hands, which leaves enough time to really live life.

To have a good life and to make sure we could appear to be ballin´ we decided, that "old europe" is not the best part of this world for this experiment. Since I love vodka and russian girls, but refuse to go to russia itself for obvious reasons, we picked the baltic states as our destination. Young and modern societies, average living expenses in their capitals still a good 20-25% below west european standards and basically right in front of our noses.

So my goals for this year are now:

- Make it to 2/4NL at least
- Have a 25k roll by the end 08

I'm fluent in Dutch, can speak broken German (but understand it pretty well if spoken slowly), yet everytime I hear Swedish or Finnish I can't help but laugh, since it sounds so funny
Now, the Baltic states are Estonia etc, right?
Estonian sounds like an even funnier version of Finnish, so I can only imagine that if I ever go there, I'd simply be walking around laughing my heart out.
I assume its fucking cold there all the time. No sun either. I'd die.

Good luck though!

I was planning to move to Belgium (Antwerp, Brussels or Lanaken, anywhere in the Flemish Region) and study some more (psychology, yo, going for masters and PhD, currently doing business administration wtf) in Holland (Maastricht). Similar plans, different destination. Student life = TAXFREE FTW!!!

lol yea, foreign languages are quite funny, but u got something wrong with finnish and swedish.
Swedish is actually a germanic language, related to german, dutch, danish and norwegian, while the finnish language has absolutely nothing in common with the surrounding tongues like russian or swedish. To everyone´s surprise, finnish is only remotely related to a single language in europe and that´s romanian. Crazy shit. People in baltic states speak some sort of russian, tho they insist on having their own language.

I´d probably go there as a student and will register at some university. Tho I don´t plan to attend classes or anything, a semester abroad always looks good in your vita. And as an engineer in energy supply thingys it´s probably a good thing to be fluent in russian when gazprom owns our continent in 2030 Wink

I never actually heard Estonian, but you are right Swedish sounds like Danish (ett flygplan, ett flyvemaskine, das Flugzeug, het vliegtuig Smile ), but Finnish is quite fucking different (lentokone wtf).
Still funniest by far imo is Swedish and Finnish though. The pronunciations are so LOL.

This one is mine

Update:

ve been a lazy bastard this month when it came to updating my blog. To sum things up

- Running neutral pokerwise

I´ve logged ~6k hands and am breaking even. Made some dumbass turnhove-experiments and plugged a huge preflop leak. Fnord owns.

Going thru PT, reading ISF´s blog and looking thru recent HH´s I realized, that my cold calls are poorly balanced, depending on opponent 22-66 to 22-88, hence calling sc´s IP on occassion.

Don't cure a weak position by adding more weakness. I would flat call 99+ sometimes.

I´ve searched my moneyz and my BR is exactly at $9178. Must run better if I want to knock on 10k´s door this month.

- Running well life-wise

Business training is over, it seems like I did a pretty good job and will get some extra $$$.
