weeeeeee!!!!
Received RB today and u know what?!
BR $10,043
Itīs a celebration, bitches!!! 5 figures look so sweet
So I had a pretty good run at 200NL so far without doing any major adjustements. The most important and most profitable adjustement I made was not to play when I was tired. I only played when I felt on top level and didnīt grind just for the sake of passing time or earning FPPīs or w/e. Iīm gonna fire up my tables now and hopefully get into some tough spots I can post here later on. |

Bye bye 10k
Bad session, dropped $550
#1 This needs explanation. Villian is 18/6 and I was like 18/16 running over these guys. I took a couple of medium pots from him with marginal hands like JTo and A9s when he started berating me, calling me a poopyhead and megadonk and things. He was so upset and my image so bad that I couldnīt fold.

Hand 1) Looks like villain really wants you to raise him on the turn by betting so small, then he shoves river trying to make up for lost value.
That said, I don't think I could fold in that situation with the table chat and all.
Hand 2) If villain is nitty, then I probably fold preflop. His range from the SB is probably very small.
Hand 3) I love how people don't 3bet QQ in full ring.
Hand 4) Why did you check the flop? |

Gratz on 10k!!
I don't really understand hand 4 either. You're taggy, he's taggy, it looks like a spot where you stand to win a big pot a lot of the time. |

Alright guys,
so I didnīt play any poker the past 3 days. I went snowboarding every day and when I came home I was so tired that playing wasnīt an option.

I knew Iīd get comments for this flop. I donīt claim my play to be good, but Iīll give u my reasoning. Our flop play depends on what range we assign to him, and given preflop action I weightened his range towards 22-55, what makes this a "either lose a big pot or win a small pot" situation. I figured he had very few draws in his range and therefore decided to slowplay to let him bluff off chips w/ his missed ppīs, in case weīre ahead heīs drawing to 2 outs mostly.
I gonna get something to eat now and will be on the grind tonight, will post hands later. |

Hand 1: I like it if villain is tight. With a loose opp, he would call you down with an overpair/maybe top pair.
Hand 2: Maybe push flop? If villain is pushing any turn, he will call a push on flop as he will get better then 2-1 pot odds. And you might have surprising calls from AJ or TJ who would fold if a flush card comes on turn.
Hand 3: depending on opp, I might check turn behind as we have a good showdown value. By betting turn you're making your hand into a bluff.
Hand 4: I play on Ongame and there a move like this would get very often 1 call and we would be in a very bad spot ... I prefer a hand like T9s.
Hand 5: yup, call is bad ... |

Hand 1: I do this too much, too. Even if V is tight, his range gets smaller on the flop and the turn to the point where he's calling the river a really high % of the time.
3: I like it as played, it sucks but I don't think I'd play this any differently without a read.
4 & 5: Yep, spewey. |

My small experience shows that these kind of move, if conditinos apply (i.e. tight opp, your image is tight, 100NL & 200NL) is +EV. |

#1 was just...his line screams 33/77. Vs this type of villian its probably +ev.
Todays session just sucked. I can say I played my A-game and did well. The cards still made me a loser and so Iīm finally back to break even this month. Had a shortie on my tables who flopped 4 (FOUR) sets vs me pf AI where I was never worse than 1:1. Funny stuff happened, it still sucks when u manage to throw villians off their game and they get rewarded. Dont wanna complain, I took a shitload of sklansky$ home tonight lol
#1 Not the best play, I know. SB is 13/11 and we sat next to each other on 5 or 6 tables, stealing and 3betting each other all night. His 3betting range should be wide enough to play him postflop.

Hand 1: The thing once you raise flop you cannot fold if villain pushes as you'll get better 2-1 odds ... vs that villain what about calling (you might even even a free turn card) ...
Hand 2: Why not 4bet to $72 and call a shove? Anyway you got the best of hit and were unlucky!!
Hand 3: Unlucky!! Don't worry mate, try to look at the big picture (3 months ago you were playing 100NL, now you have a pretty nice BR for 200NL ) |

Just don't do that at 25NL (neither at 50NL), villains cannot find the fold button ... |

How many tables do you typically play?
Do you find that the mini-tables are hard on the eyes?
I am trying to figure out if it's the mini-tables or something else that is bugging my eyes. |

Iīm playing between 9 and 12 tables, depending on table conditions and my level of concentration. Actually I love the miniview, it takes some time to get used to it tho. Its the colors that were killing me, so I went buying iBolide and now everything is fine.
On yesterdays session:
Iīm free falling since my 10k post and am now down like 1.6k for this week. Iīm running between 15/13 and 13/12 right now. Iīm running sick cold and hope this ends soon before I have to move down.
#1 Here I got owned hard. Villian is 16/13, on turn I figured I could get him off 88/99/JJ, didnīt expect him to make such a huge call.

Hand 1: I think this one depends a lot of how you've been playing and how villain sees you. If you want him to fold turn you're better of betting something like $41 then $38 (From a previous post from Fnord he mentioned and I agree that the $4x is psychologically more difficult to call then $3x (even if the amounts are quite close)). As played, on river, I think you need to bet more like $100 if you want him to fold. By betting 3/5 of pot on river (after betting 2/3 turn) you're saying you don't have the A ...
Hand 2: F*** just plain unlucky!
Hand 3: nh |

Thats a very interesting point I havenīt considered in my betsizes yet. Thanks for input, Iīm gonna keep it on my mind.
I havenīt played any NLHE yesterday, since I feared the tilt after free falling 1.7k within 3 or 4 sessions. I will drop back down to 100NL when I lose more than 1.5 buy ins tonight. PokerEV tells me Iīm running horribly bad, so I think my BR should still be the most determining factor which limit to grind.
Opposite to HE Iīm running very well in 5 card draw PL. I gotta thank wes for taking me to tables other than NLHE, itīs very refreshing to play different variants of poker (tho I suck balls at stud8 and PLO). I played 5cd as a kid with my friends, betting sweets instead of money and I forgot how much fun that game is. Iīm gonna stick with 5cd beside NLHE and try to get some strat together, since thereīs very few info aviable around the webs.
So far Iīve practiced in a learning by doing way, some random thoughts so far are:
Position
Position matters even more in draw games. Unlike stud games we have very few information aviable at a draw games table. The only useful info we can get are our opponents betting patterns and the number of discarded cards.
Hand reading and strength
In 5cd it doesnīt matter all that much, what cards villian might hold, itīs all about Absolute hand strength. The reading process starts with putting them on a one pair/trips/2pr/8-9 outs draw/pat-hand and only if we hold a similar hand we may start thinking about his strength within those type of hand, ie. Jacks up and better, 999 or better and things like that. Once weīve figured out a bad villians opening requirements it becomes surprisingly easy to assign a range to him post draw. For example:

Villian limped and discarded 3 cards, so he probably has a weak pair like 77-JJ and maybe worse, I havent seen anybody doing this with AKXXX yet. We checked and discarded 3 cards, too so our range is 22-JJ, AKXXX. We caught trips and bet out hoping he caught 2pr or calls with jacks or tens

Villian here is solid HE player and he has been very active OTB and in SB vs BB. KKxxx is a great hand to call, since he will attack here with 55xxx+, but a 3bet probably pushes him off anything below AAxxx. Even if we dont catch up, c/c postdraw could be profitable when we discard 3. I choose to discard only 2 for deception and balance. This is a very standard play most players overdo at these tables. Keep notes on guys who discard 2 with hands like QQKxx or AAJxx. We catch trips and c/r river, since he is likely to bet out his obv 2pr. |

Not much poker for me the last days. I gotta finish my term paper in economics until monday 11am and Im kind of stuck. Eceonomists are actually pretty cool guys who write tons of great stuff and while doing research a find myself reading interesting articles rather than topic related.
April will be a brutal and bloody grind war, holding a knife with my teeth and fighting to the bones lol, until then Iīll with drunken 5cd donking with is pretty fun. Iīm recovering my NLHE losses at PL 5cd.

March was sick. I had a good run tonight (before iPoker servers broke down lol) and managed to slide back in the green. check out the graph:
Weird. For some reason the regular players were playing back at me very hard. My stats hover around 15/13 and 13/12 atm, I ainīt going all that crazy or whatsoever and havenīt been caught pulling moves more than usually. Itīs just...I feel like Iīm wearing a red shirt in a bulls arena in Toledo. Iīve went thru my first "downswing" at 200NL, dropping 10BI in a row. Not that bad a downer in terms of buy ins, itīs just the doubled amounts that made sleep bad the last nights. Iīm still confident and believe I can beat 1/2NL
PokerEV says I run very bad by the end of March, not counting tonights session
Iīm pretty happy with how close the blue and green line are, the gap between those two and the red line sucks tho
Tonights hands
#1 Villian runs 12/10/3.8, moved up recently after running extremely hot at .5/1NL. He 3bets me light, calls my 3bets light and doesnt ever give up in a 3bet pot.

I particularly liked hand #5. I have to start to do this shit against regs who regularly check-raise me! |

Yea, we definetly have to adjust vs habitual c/r bluffers. In hindsight I believe #5 was bad tho, Iīd like to have at least some sort of equity like two overs or something. Gotta work on that.
April began weird, I got pwned by shortstacks. Gotta work on my counter shortstack play.

1) Call because of pot odds
2) Good
3) Fold preflop. As played, I am not sure at all.
4) He will call river here a lot with 88-TT type hands. He might even make some hero call with 22-44, putting you on AK. I like this a lot more if river is a Q. |

Man you run bad!
All those hands are super standard.
I just moved up to $1/$2 and you go and move down to $0.50/$1.
No worried though. You'll be back within a week. |

Oh well, what a crazy month so far. I think or hope I broke out of my first serious downswing this year, I was already down 1.6k this month but now am slowly recovering. I had a hard time playing and thinking poker, since I ran really bad, right now as Iīm trying to get in more hands per month than ever before.
Beside poker I participated in my first run this year and finished 5/351 over 5.5km, 23:47:00. Could have been 10 or 20 secs faster, if there wouldnt have been this cute blonde in hotpants running in front of me the first lap. So sexy and so slow
On monday morning I woke up and decided to quit smoking. Bad idea to do this in the middle of a losing streak, but w/e. I bought tons of fruits, Evian water and nicotine chewing gum, which works pretty well. Wish me luck, both on poker and becoming a non-smoker.

Things continue to go down. Iīm not whining or whatsoever, I simply suck at grinding. I should have never set a goal for #hands played, Iīd be better off setting goals in terms of quality. Like >2.5ptBB/100 or whatever.
I dropped another $350 and it seems I cant get out of this mess. I might be too result oriented, but I dont feel like Iīm doing well. I must admit, that Iīm not a true grinder. When I recall how well I played last month, when I sticked to my "only play as long as your on top level/not tired"-rule and not to grind just for the sake of grinding and compare my performance to what I do now things become clear. Stamina never was one of my quality attributes.
I mean, whereever I go and whatever I do, I do extremely well over short intervalls and suck when it comes to doing something with less pressure and effort for a long time. At university I easily score Bīs, studying for like 1/10 the time other need to achieve the same result, but I cant manage to double the time and score an A. Same when it comes to work, I perform way above average short term but get lazy long term.
Itīs a good thing I finally (re-)recognized all that. I already stated at the beginning of this OP not grind for the sake of grinding. I paid lots of moniez this month to remind myself. Fortunately Iīm still breaking even when I count Bonus and RB. I iPoker
Check out the hands (and please tell me if I suck or am result oriented.

#2 35/24/1.9 opponent. Stats may be screwed up, he shortstacked 5 other tables, heīs probably running fairly tighter full stacked+. In hindsight, I should lead flop and play my draw as long as I have equity, but the flop check is a missed c/r.

1) I dont have reads on villain, just the same stats as you.
Why are you checking the flop? Are you slowplaying? Or are you thinking that only a better hand calls??
If you are slow playing, then DONT! Never slowplay in a 3bet pot.
If it's the latter, then you are wrong because villain definitely calls flop with worse: KQ, QQ, draws.
2) A high flops are the best flops to cbet on. You have a FD here, not a monster. Cbet and be happy if he folds.
Would you c/r this flop with AA, AK here??
3) Yeah this is probably spew in this particular case. Villain is kinda nitty, and he just cbet into two people on a board that sucks for cbetting. Then he fires the turn. You have very very little fold equity on the turn. Do you think he fires this turn with JJ-KK?
I probably fold flop here because it's 3way
4) This hand is fine I think. Only thing I can think of is maybe bet a little less on the river for pot control because you really don't know where you are at with him being unknown. If he is a donkey, then for sure bet huge every street. |

Seems like Iīm slowly getting back into the game, Iīve grinded a good chunk of my losses back at 100NL and will complete 10k hands there before I move back up.

What a weird month. Iīm eventually back to even and due to a massive amount of Bonus and RB my BR hit 10k again. Everything will be fine. Check out my PT stats from April 1st - Today:
weirdo. However, Iīm moving back up. I began to split my daily session in 1k hands a.m. and 1.5k - 2k hands in the evening. Since 200NL tables are rare in the morning Iīll still be playing some 100NL, but given my actual run there Iīm quite happy to do so.
After dropping so hard (recent swing was the largest consecutive net loss Iīve ever experienced) itīs surprising, how I didnīt only had a hard time getting back into playing, but into thinking poker as well. You may have noticed, that I didnīt post much at all while getting river raped and didnt update my OP. I know, that particularly during bad times we should discuss and review our games even more and absorb every critic and comment we could get, but for some reason my mind was completely blocked. Right now Iīm slowly getting back into thinking-mode and begin to work on my game again. Iīm gonna focus on my turn- and riverplay the next weeks and go leak hunting. Hopefully I can fix some and share it with all you dudes

I'll take these in reverse order:
#5, I love.
#4, I'm not sure, but a flop bet makes this so much easier. This guy just seems to have you psyched out.
#3, I call river and don't hate the line. Probably b/f turn if his AF is low.
#2, is right. His range is wide here.
#1, with your read this is super tight. Some guys just don't know how to give up.
Good to hear about your roll. You'd have had it back faster if you just had more time to play lately. I am suffering some fluctuations myself lately. |

Hand #1 I like. You bet or raise he might fold a worse hand but definitely wont fold a better hand.
Hand #2 I play same way a lot of the time vs an aggro steal.
Hand #3 I probably pay off. If he has like AJ or J9 or a T oh well. And ya I probably bet/fold the turn or fold the river if he calls a turn bet.
Hand #4 I don't mind a check on the flop to induce a bluff, which he did (bluff or not, induced a bet), so I think you gotta call the river. If you're worried about a flush draw on the turn then raise there.
Hand #5
I usually raise this flop bet when I'm the pfrer. Idk if that's the right thing to do or not, but it usually makes the rest of your decisions a little easier. (edit) But I like the fold on the turn as played. |

Thanks for the feedback guys, itīs well appreciated.
Hows it going SillyString, havenīt heard from you for a while?
Just finished 800 hands of 200NL fr and playing in the a.m. was a great strategic decision of mine Tho I have a hard time getting 10 tables together, there are still enough bad players spread over the few tables and not a single good regular shows up in the morning. Got to force myself to get up around 7:30 so I have enough time to earn some $$$ without getting into trouble too much.
#1 Villian runs 22/19/2.1, former nit gone wild. I played back at him with success before.

iirc that turn overbet was AI.
Todays morning session became an afternoon session since I had class this morning. I ran okay and made $$$. Nothing spectacular tho, but I must say I played really well. If I only could maintain this level of focus and thinking/analyzing for more than 2 hrs I could start livin soon
#1 U can find this hand in FR section as well. The more I think about it, the more obv b/f on river becomes. During the hand I felt like c/c or even c/f could be the better option. Villian runs 28/5/0.6 over a smallish 120 hands sample.

#2 This is meh, 4bet size sucks. Villian runs 14/13/6.5 and really likes to 3bet. I 3bet him quite often as well, so our ranges are expanded enough to take a flop, since we had been 4betting very tight I decided to 4bet bluff, figuring a good chance to get him off AQ/88-JJ. Didnt work, nh.

Well yea, itīs a mess. All factors considered and after getting some feedback Iīm okay with my laydown.
On poker: I swing so hard at 200NL. I made a 10k hands killing at 100NL this month, but cant get my feet on the ground at 200NL. Itīs like....idk, itīs not that I fell getting ran over or outplayed conatantly, itīs a mix of running cold, misinterpreting my opposition/outleveling myself and experimenting on later streets. I bought a subscription at LeggoPoker and have tons of new ides running around my head, and implementing new ideas/strats/concepts is usually expensive. I spend this afternoon in the next larger city and our way there I talked a lot with my neighbour about poker. Always surprising, how I generate most insights while Iīm physically talking. A few random thoughts:
- Itīs so sick how bad actually full ring regulars play turn and river (me included). If youīre facing the standard 12/10 type of guy, what is his range for raising the turn after calling pre- and flop? Do they ever bluff raise a river?
- FU pot control. Seriously, stop it. How often do we check a turn for pot control, figuring we can put in one more bet, but not two and want to see a showdown? Stop checking. If we are ahead we want value, if we are behind weīre better off to know it NOW and not on river and let villian dictate the price. Pot control rivers, stop doing that shit on turn.
- Learn to 2 barrel/float/bluffraise/4bet bluff a decent amount of the time.
Hands:
#1 19/11/3. It was so obvious what he had on turn.

Let this month end. After dropping another couple buy ins Iīm now around break even at 1/2NL over 55k hands. It seems like thereīs a hidden difference between 100NL and 200NL that makes me become a be or maybe even slight losing player after I beat 100NL. I gotta improve, study more and stop spewing, I several buy ins were just burning money.
Beside posting here more frequently and make a habit of reviewing my hands after each session Iīm experiment the next weeks with playing less tables, no HUD and then lagging it up. I already played 2 sessions of 5 to 6 tables running around 22/19/4 and it was great. Table/seat selection becomes way more important and I wonīt get in as many hands as I used to, but it seems when the tables are good this will be my way to go.
The adjustements Iīve made/am aiming to make are:
- Isolate more. This is the main adjustement to exploit the nits who limp/call 22-99 and play fit or fold on flop. Obv, cbet 100% and shut down on any turn where we canīt beat a set. Beside kicking 10/6-butts I get more value from the bad players, vs whom Iīll be valuebetting more. I recently read an article, that said "missing value at small stakes is criminal" and itīs true. I think I wrote it before, pot control is one of the most misunderstood concepts in NLHE. Since nits and fish require different game plans on later streets I canīt play this style with more than 6 tables.
- Steal more. Att.2 steal gets above 40%. Nowadays 25% - 35% is considered a solid att.2 steal in full ring, while 40% - 45% is considered good at 6max. Actually, in a blind steal situation, ie folded to CO/BTN, the isnīt or at least shouldnīt be any difference in stealing and defending ranges. Considering that the average full ring player 3bets less frequently than a 6maxer we should aim for a higher att.2 steal.
- No HUD. Well, what can I say? I donīt miss it. I read hands and figure out hand ranges in my head. I have enough time to look people up in PT. I pay more attention to postflop tendencies, which was a huge flaw in my game - Looking at HUD stats and pulling conclusions regarding postflop plays. While there usually are certain correlations between preflop numbers and postflop tendencies and the VPIP/PFR/TAF sign gives us a general idea of what type of villian we are facing, I donīt pay all that much attention to sizing/timing tells or search for patterns in their game
#1 Iīd like to hear your opinions on my turn bet, I guess this could be too thin. Our villian here limp/calls wide and likes to call flops. He calls us with diamonds/J8-AJ/T8/Ad9x/55/99. I really hate checking back this turn

#2 Another loose-passive guy. This hand kinda sucks, I isolated him with almost any two before and he played flops very straight forward, folding a ton to my cbets. His range consists of almost any pp and given his looseness we canīt discount straights or straight draws

hand 1: check turn. all the draws hit, plus an overcard - i think qt is also in villain's range. that sets you up to be able to call a river bet
hand 2: most likely A6,A2, or 77-TT. I like your play on every street.
hand 3: not sure about pushing the turn, what are you trying to rep - a draw? if villain is fishy then you're forcing a lot of hands to fold that would probably call pot and then never be able to fold their top-pair or whatever - then again, you can't fold river either and implied odds, dunno. funny to see a villain limp-call aces and get stacked though
hand
hand 4: any reads? i fold, but it's close. sometimes you're 50-50, sometimes behind and only rarely against AQ etc. |

Todayīs headline:
Iīm stuck
I dont know whats going on, but I feel like Iīm running around in circles. Itīs like....the swings are larger and longer than my graphs are showing. I feel like a year ago when I was stuck at 50NL 6max and seriously considered quitting poker. I donīt think about quitting now, but I hate the feeling of not progressing and doing huge mistakes. Good thing when u run bad for an extended time is, your senses for your own mistakes sharpen. Just like economy my/our evolution as a player revolves around 4 states of mind over and over again. Wait. I just had a great insight and deleted a long rambling about swings and whining and what a bitch I am and whatnot. Iīm going through the newbieīs circle of death. Again and again and again. That is all. Doing well - Running hot - Running cold - Getting desperate, considering quitting. The symptomes are less visible, since we practice proper BRM and our game rests on a solid foundation of experience, knowledge and skill. Still, itīs the same story, where I need to run bad and lose money to sharpen my senses and motivate myself to get over the next hump and become a less bad player one day.
I didnīt play all that much lately, the sun is shining and we have >20°C for the first time in months. Iīm rather out riding BMX, running or just chilling in a café watching the world go by. I participated in my first 1/2 marathon and finished 812/7899 at 01:46:21. Feels great.
Last 2k hands I played were 100NL HU, where I felt comfortable. This afternoon I played 2 tables vs a pretty good regular. I played my best didnīt feel like I got ran over or something. The guy told me Iīm "unusual good good for these stakes" and kept playing me for 2 hrs, so I think he figured to have an edge over me.
