Okay, I made this thread last year.....but I pussed out and didn't buy a gaming system. This year for Christmas I got money from different family members to buy one of these machines. I was in Best Buy two days ago ready to buy a PS3, but I played NCAA 2009 on Xbox just messing around and was pretty amazed (just like I'd be if I had played the PS3 version, I'm sure). I ended up not buying anything because I was so impressed. That said, I haven't played a PS3 yet either, so.........Here are my thoughts, and what I want in a gaming system (Wildbob please throw your opinion in here).

I play mostly sports games. The NCAA Football series is the best, imo, and pretty much want the best gaming system for that game. That said....

I've heard Xbox 360's online system is far superior to PS3's. That's pretty huge if I want to play somebody else.

The blu-ray thingy is a plus on the PS3, but my wife and I don't watch many movies anyway so it's not that big of a plus. Maybe if we had it we'd watch more movies? Our TV is badass enough to turn our living room into a movie theater btw.

I like being able to get on the web using the PS3. Is it just like using a laptop on a bigger screen? If so that's cool, but I already have a laptop so maybe not...

I've heard that for sports games (thanks Wildbob last year), and maybe any other game, that Xbox has a faster processor than PS3. Truth still?

I don't play first person shooter type games. I will buy GTA4, though, so I can kick the shit out of people.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I don't care if you're a fanboy for either system, help me buy the best one!

Thanks.

I don't have good knowledge on this but all I have done for the past 2 weeks is play NCAA for 360. Like all day. Fucking sick game. Pretty sure NCAA for 360 had a better frame rate than on PS3. Maybe that was for last years version?

I don't understand the frame rate statement. I'm pretty sure in pure hardware the ps3 outclasses the 360.

I think strictly from a console standpoint the ps3 is hands down the winner.

If you consider the built in bluray player, wifi, and free online play the ps3 is a much better bargain.

The problem is the userbase. More people have an xbox which means most of your buddies are probably playing madden, etc on xbox.

UG, if you don't play shooters then it doesn't make a huge difference which system you buy. The main reason I would recommend 360 over PS3 is because the PS3 controller sucks for shooters while the 360's feels perfect and it has Halo and the 2 Gears of War games. But if you're not into shooters then it's basically a wash. I own about 20 total 360 and PS3 games and the only ones that aren't available on both consoles are Halo 3, Gears of War 1 and 2, Lost Odyssey (360) and MLB 08 The Show (PS3). The vast majority of the big releases come out for both consoles.

As for the whole Madden/NCAA issue, the 2008 versions ran at 30 fps on PS3 and 60 fps on the 360 but the 2009 versions run at 60 fps on both consoles. Also, while it's true that "on paper" the PS3 hardware is more powerful than the 360, you wouldn't know it by looking at the games as Gears of War 2 looks better than anything available on PS3 right now. Killzone 2 comes out soon for PS3 which is looking ridiculously good graphics-wise so we'll see what happens when it comes out.

It is worth mentioning that you do have to pay $50 per year to play online on 360 while PS3's online is free. Generally (like bigred said) it's much easier to find games on 360 just because a lot more people have 360s than PS3s. The 360 outsold the PS3 3:1 this holiday season and this has been consistent since both consoles were released. The 360 comes with a mic so most of the people on XBox live are able to talk (for better or for worse) while the PS3 doesn't come with a mic and doesn't even have an official one (you have to use a USB mic) so most of the people on PS3 never talk. This a big deal for games like Call of Duty where you need to work together with your team but for a sports game when you're playing someone 1v1 it's not really important.

The blu ray player on the PS3 is good quality but blu ray movies are expensive to buy right now (MSRP is $30-$40). If you are a Netflix subscriber you can stream movies on your 360 which is sick. (Triptanes could talk more about this feature).

I never use the web feature on the PS3. It's a super simple browser that lacks all the features of Firefox or even IE. Also, using the controller to type stuff is a pain. You can buy a little controller-sized keyboard and USB keyboards would probably work but I'd rather just use my laptop.

To sum everything up:

1. If you love shooters, get a 360.
2. If you're a Netflix subscriber, get a 360.
3. If you want a blu ray player, get a PS3.
4. If you prefer one system's exclusive games, buy that system.
360 Exclusives (out now): Halo 3, Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Mass Effect, Fable 2
Upcoming 360 Exclusives: Halo 3: Recon, Mass Effect 2
PS3 Exclusives (out now): Resistance, Resistance 2, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Ratchet and Clank, Metal Gear Solid 4
Upcoming PS3 Exclusives: Killzone 2, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5
If you can't make a decision based on one of these factors, then it really doesn't matter which one you buy. (Just don't get a Wii, mine just sits there and collects dust).

I was a sony fanboy last generation definitely, but that was mostly due to exclusive games. GTA is now cross platform, the gran turismo series has fallen from grace and there are better cross platform and xbox exclusive racers, and there are a buttload more series that were sony exclusive and now arent. On top of that you said you are interested in GTA4, and xbox has exclusive rights to downloadable content for that game. Also, isnt the xbox less expensive? I hate to say it, but if I were going to buy a console it would certainly be a 360.

i have yet to understand why people think ps3 controller is worse than xbox controller for shooters. ps3 doesnt feel as nice and if your thumbs get sweaty then you can have some intermittent problems, but the toggle sensitivity is way better than xbox.

ive played xbox shooters way more than ps shooters and yet im more accurate on ps solely due to the toggles being more sensitive and having a more uniform sensitivity overall.

I have heard that the actual mechanics of the ps3 controller is superior...

that being said, a mouse owns all. But everyone knows the pc is the best shooter platform by far, right?

ps3 online is free, 360 aint
ps3 can pick up wirless signals, 360 requires a 100$ adaptor for wireless (both obv can hook up with cables)
360 has a better online userface but apart form that theres not much difference imo. which u dont need to use to play

Also, if you're letting the Blu Ray capability of the PS3 sway you, supposedly it has trouble playing some DVD's. Also, it's likely Blu Ray players are going to start dropping in price pretty significantly in the near future. Their sales aren't nearly as good as was hoped since most people are happy with DVD quality rather than forking out an extra $300-$400 to buy more expensive Blu Ray movies. Plus they want to stay ahead from HD pirating which is obviously just around the corner.

I hate the triggers on the PS3 controller for FPS. Neither of them (R1 or R2) feel as good as the 360 trigger. Also, I hate the thumbstick placement on PS3, it just doesn't feel as natural as the 360 controller. This really only comes into play for shooters. For any other type of game, the PS3 controller is fine.

Dont get a Wii if you never have friends over because it is definitely a social game system.

Try getting a girl to play Madden 09 with you.
Good luck with that.

From a pure hardware standpoint, you are correct. The problem (as explained to me by a developer) is that it's crazy difficult to write code for it. It's a case where the technology is still way ahead of the SDK. In that regard, Microsoft has them beat hands down with the 360. When companies need to get a game to market fast, they develop it on the 360 first, then it gets ported over to PS3 or (depending on the game) Wii. This is where the frame rate statement is relevant. It doesn't matter how awesome the hardware is, the code is not optimized for it.

ya.. ps2 owned xbox last time out because it had over a year with absolutely no competition. Developers had no choice but to get good utilizing its development kit.. Its why graphics seem to get better over a systems life span while the hardware doesnt change at all. Dev's find tricks to optimize their games on the system. Devs had to relearn how to program a game for ps3 a year after 360 came out, and on top of that the system is supposedly really hard to write code for.

George both systems are good.

I own both but I use my 360 more.

if you enjoy alot of movies and collect movies go with the ps3.

if you enjoy gaming, online gaming, go with the 360.

Both systems have there flaws.
360s have been known to get the "3 rings of death" 3 flashing red lights on the console.

PS3 have known to overheat as well as the laser to burn out on them.

the positive with the 360 xbox will fix it for free as well as shipping.

the ps3 will not unless its under the 1 year warranty....

online: ps3 is free yes but the online play is no where in comparison to the xbox but thats what you get when its free.
360 you pay $50 bucks a year get unlimited demos, videos friends list and online gaming in which I enjoy very much. You can get in games easier than the ps3.

In my fully opinion if its just for gaming go with the 360.

Thank you everyone for posting your thoughts on the two platforms. I purchased the Xbox 360 yesterday and am very happy with the system. Right now I have GTA4 and NCAA Football, but plan to add to that in the future. I've never been a big fan of shooter-games, but with the online features I'm sure I'll pick up a few so I can let you guys dominate me sometime soon.

The only gripe I have is that one of my controllers doesn't work (I bought an Xbox bundle with two controllers). Costco is making me take the entire system in to exchange it, so I'm limited (until I return it) with what I can do with my games as I may lose any saved information if I get a new system...Sucks, but no biggie.

EDIT: As some of you know, I'm a retard when it comes to figuring out how technology works. I did a quick google search on troubleshooting my controller and found an answer the first page I went to. Now both controllers work but my friends are no longer here, lol.

NCAA Football and GTA4

I have three other games (Indiana Jones Leggo, Kung-Fu Panda, and some racing game), but those either came with the system or with Xbox Live.

I'm going to purchase more games soon. Most of that will depend on what games the people of FTR play online. I will definitely suck at any shooter game but I'm willing to try...

PS3, easily. If nothing else, the fact that's it's a blu-ray player as well should trump everything. Blu-Ray kicks ass.
