Anyone notice there are some commercials on now that have subtitles in Spanish like you have the closed captioning on?? Centrum Silver commercials have it on them. Sorry but this is total BS. If I want it in Spanish I'll hit the damn SAP button on my remote. It's just like the damn ATM's and everything else. Soon we will have to hit the SAP button to have English captioned in.

Learn ENGLISH or expect to miss out sometimes. This is the problem with immigrants now ( or at least the PC liberal crowd that supports everything about illegal immagration ). We need to help them. When people were giving up everything to come to this country they knew they needed to learn English, AND WANTED TO. Now, WE need to start speaking spanish. Its BS, plain and simple.

By 2042 climate change will have caused the oceans to rise by 30+ feet flooding a large percent of china, leading to china invading Russia, WW3 involves Russia vs China, nuclear winter surrounds the globe killing 95% of the population.

It's still America and as far as I know there was no vote to change the official language. You want to live in America then be an American. I respect every culture and feel every culture has a wide array of things to add to our AMERICAN culture.

When you travel abroad do you not hope to be immersed in the country's culture? That is why we travel abroad. To enrich our perspective on the world and grow as a person, as what makes up who you are is a cumulative effects of all your life experiences. When I travel I expect to have to adjust to where I am at. If I loved the place so much that I would want to live there I would think it would because I loved everything about the place and would want to meld into the culture including the language. Would I want to desert everything I was about before moving there? Hell no. I would love to share my views and experiences that have made me who I am. Including my language and religion. But I wouldn't think of forcing anything on anybody or expect them to change their culture because I am there now.

America is a nation (a rare one in this world) where you are free to practice whatever religion you want, practice whatever customs that you believe in be they religious or not. Basically anything that does not break the law. How many places in this world can you do this? That is what America is all about. That is why we are the greatest nation on earth. People should WANT to be Americans not just be IN America.

There is a long and great history that has made this country what it is. A history that is full of stories of people of all races, religions and backgrounds coming together as Americans. That's all I fear, that America stops being a united country of Americans and becomes a separated society of whites, of blacks, and browns. Separate societies that all expect to fly their own flag of self interest above the American flag.

I feel a lot of people see this as a step towards bringing us all together and helping those that our new to this country. I think it actually takes us in the opposite direction. When you think back to the early part of this century and imagine our great-grandparents and great- great- grandparents if they would have had the attitude that many immigrants today have. Would there have been an industrial revolution? Would we have been able to defeat the evil that was Nazi Germany? Would we have been first on the moon? I really don't know.

Too much today people confuse politics with patriotism. They see problems in government (which there are many) and mistake that for a bad America. Hate the Democrats, hate the Republicans, hate whomever you want. But love America.

Again that's really why the commercials bother me. America is an English speaking country, those who want to be here should want to learn English. Teach your children your native language and be proud of your heritage. But if you want to reap all the benefits of this country, expect to have to speak the language.

I know this was long winded but I really feel a lot of people don't see the bigger picture and that this kind of stuff divides us more then it brings us together. Telling Spanish people "that's ok, you don't have to learn English" will hold them down and keep the two cultures from coming together. If I am at a bus stop and three people are talking in Spanish about NFL football am I going to get in the conversation, no...I don't speak Spanish. Now if they were speaking English might I have talked to them? Yes. Might I have made a new friend? Yes. Might have this meeting have led to a whole experience where our families became friends and on down the lane? Maybe.

This is what will be lost if no one feels the need to adapt to be an American.

Fine, un-official language. When 82% of the population speaks it that makes it pretty official to me. Really does't change the point.

What does this have to do with official/unofficial language. Businesses want the largest consumer based possible. Not including non-english speaking consumers is cutting out a big part of the potential market.

I love everyone that wants to come to this country to be Americans. Not come to this country and demand we make it little Mexico, or little Iraq, or little any other country. You want to live in America be proud of America. Keep your traditions, keep your language, keep who you are, just don't expect US to change to accomodate you. The people who came to our country in the early early decades of the 1900's didn't expect that. The worked hard to learn the language so they could succeed here. Thats the difference in the people that came then and those that are coming now. All they want is to reap the benefits of America without trying to become Americans. The want to stay Mexicans living in America. Screw that, you want to be an American then learn English. Don't except us to make everything bi-lingual for you.

Once again Prozach I think you are missing the bigger picture on how this actually divides us. I have no intention of trading insults with you. If you can't carry on a decent debate just don't bother. Just makes you look silly.

If you took the time to actually read my post and give it some thought you can see I welcome everybody to this country. I judge not on race, or religion. I welcome all that want to be AMERICANS. Not people that just want to benefit from what so many Americans have fought and died for.

I don't think that this is the case. The immigrants in the early 20th century usually moved into ethnic enclaves in major metropolitan areas. The Irish spoke English due to the forced eradication of the Gaelic language in their homeland, but if you went into an Italian neighborhood you'd hear Italian, a Jewish neighborhood you'd hear Yiddish, a Russian neighborhood Russian, etc. The children of these immigrants learned English in school and taught their parents to varying degrees of success.

I live in a community that experienced both the immigration wave of the early 20th century and the new wave of immigration the country is experiencing today (Hispanic, Southeast Asian, etc). When I was a kid, before these people largely died off, we had the "Old Italians", folks who had immigrated to this country and spoke very broken English, and largely spoke Italian to each other.

Like I said, my community has many recent immigrants, and I don't think any of them want to be "accomodated" in any way. They're very hard working people. There really just isn't a mechanism in place to teach English to adults who work 12 hours a day, other than gradual assimilation. This was largely the same in the early 20th century. Their children are learning though, and will grow up to be bilingual.

Ultimately, the commerical with Spanish subtitles is about money, as someone else said. With technology making mass marketing possible, we're going to be exposed to this sort of thing. I'm sure advertising during the early 20th century was often done in non-English languages if immigrants were being marketed to.
