england has a solid squad for sure
did you see joe cole's goal in the sweden game
holy shit
now that owen is out we will probably be seeing crouch play that position
they will beat equador with ease

England will luckbox their way through and we'll all get to hear about how you are going to win the world cup and how you're "the best side ever".

Quick question - do people think the media hype up the England team as a method of drumming up (more) support or do you think they genuinely believe the team are as good as they are being made out to be?

This England team are (on paper) a first-rate world-class team. The midfield in particular can probably be argued as the best in the world.
However, between the strange tactics from the management and the perceived attitude of the players they bewilder and frustrate me everytime I watch them!!
(Not just this team either - but every team since the early to mid- eighties with only a couple of games going against this flow.)

As for the media- hype. I try not to read any newspapers regarding England because of the utter shite spewed forth from a bunch of sensationalistic bunch of tossers! Evil or Very Mad
Sorry but journalists really do my 'ed in.

Anyway, Staresy, aren't you Welsh?
If the Welsh national side actually made the WC finals I'm sure we'll all be made very aware of how well they do.
A touch of sour grapes perhaps? Wink

Po$$e$$ed, thank you for your optimism.

Unfortunately, I have had it beaten in to me for a long time that ANY team England should beat "with ease" will be "hard-working", "well organized" and probably beat us on penalties. Sad

England aren't playing well enough to win the World Cup.

However, luck is a factor in World Cups, and teams generally improve as they go on, so we still have a chance.

WE'll never make it to the World Cup Finals. We will be teased with some brief optimism during qualifying, but we have just come to accept the fact that we will never make it there!

Even if we did, I don't think we would hear about how well we'd do, we would receive some condescending and patronising load of bollocks about how "brave" we were and could "little" Wales actually pick up a world cup point after completing the unbelievable feat of actually qualifying. Seriously - have u heard the tossers on ITV over the African teams?

I actually quite like your response Phew72, it is quite refreshing to meet an England fan who has a realistic appraisal of what England are actually capable of. I happen to agree with you that England actually have a solid team on paper (it pains me to say it!) but they fail to apply some of the most simple concepts necessary at international football - the first of which is keeping the ball for long periods and making the other team chase it round the pitch.

World Cup refs for the WIN!!111!!!

I have never seen such a shitty goddamn job in a major international finals in my life. They might as well staple the yellow to their jersey and just point to it instead of being bothered reaching into their pocket for it.

Anyone see the refereeing in the Ukraine vs Tunisia game??

I am cheering for Ukraine but the ref won that game for us. He didn't call the handball we commited on Tunisia's free kick, and he gave Shevchenko a penalty kick after an obvious dive.

So I take it you missed the outstanding job the refs did in the last Superbowl then?

I retract my previous statement regarding referees. Shocked 9 vs 9, lol.

Also England played a lot better against Ecuador, still nowhere near the top, but that was a huge improvement.

The only reason Wales don't reach the WC finals is down to a lack of world-class quality throughout the whole squad and having to compete in the European qualifying region. You certainly have (and had) your fair share of class strikers and midfield players (Earnshaw, Giggs, Rush, Bellamy, etc.)
There are several countries who qualify for the finals that only get there because their qualifying region is lacking in decent opposition (*cough* USA *cough* Very Happy )

This has been (and I think always will be) a problem with the World Cup finals. FIFA lay down draconian rules and guidelines for the referees to follow, so they have very little option but to book people at every opportunity. Then Sepp Blatter has the nerve to blame the referees after they have followed his rules. pffft....
(Graham Poll's cock-up aside - looking forward to hearing fans appreciation during his Premiership matches next season. Should be a few choice songs.)

I was watching england vs. ecuador in Stuttgart, what a boring game. About refereeing, I am a soccer ref myself and in general especially in the group matches refereeing was really good but its gone down recently. Pathetic penalty kick aussies vs. italy. Too few red cards (yes that is right, one or two more should've been given) holland vs portugal etc. At least for what I have seen the assistant referees have been amazingly good.

... still a huge mistake from Pekerman in my opinion to not bring Messi on. There's a player who can kick-start swift counter-attacks and can really close a game out.

yeah, by putting cambiasso on instead of messi he left his team with no forward counter-attack threat to an awful german defence while suggesting that his team could hold out for the one-nil win.
Eriksson does it too which is why england wont win shit either playing in such a way. Obviously later stage games are always only going to be 1-0 games or penalty shootouts etc but playing negative footbal just asks for trouble.

Agreed. I've always said that attack is the best form of defense... you simply cannot sit back when leading 1-0, there has to be some kind of pro-active football.

Dwarfy's England first half analysis:

Hargreaves: Fantastic, best player on the pitch.
Terry: Solid but lost concentration when he was booked.
Lampard: Poor, giving the ball away too much.
Ferdinand: Needs to stop playing those stupid long balls.

It is when the ball is played.

Examples... in this picture, number 10 on the red team is offside, assuming number 11 plays the ball now.

In this picture, number 9 is not offside, assuming number 11 plays the ball now.
