Let's start this off. Who's checking out UFC 98 on Saturday? Goddamn I can't wait for Machida/Evans, that's a serious contender for match of the year. I'm picking Machida. Been a fan of his style for a while.

Serra/Hughes...both pricks. Hughes is almost done, and Serra was a fluke champ. Though, Hughes is the bigger evil of the two, as anyone who's read his book can tell you. Dude is the biggest self aggrandizing, delusional piece of shit in MMA. He makes Tito look like a great guy. God I hope Serra puts him to sleep.

And why this fight is opening the televised card is beyond me, but Sean Sherk vs. Frankie Edgar should be an entertaining war. Despite Sherk's suspension and such, I'm still a fan of him. He has ridiculous stamina, and is always pushing, pushing, pushing. Should be a great fight, and I'll go with Sherk by unanimous decision.

Edgar/Sherk...Goddamn Sherk had an awful gameplan. Yeah, let's box with the superior striker who has a reach advantage. BRILLIANT. Let's not utilize our world class wrestling, as well. Terrible.

I think Serra got ripped off.

As for the main event...

i'll post a better link when i find it.

rampage is up next to fight lyoto, and stylistically this is a great fight for lyoto. rampage has turned into primarily a boxing counter puncher. this isn't exactly what you want against lyoto.

Thanks for the link.

I still can't believe how badly Evans was dominated. He never stood a chance.

Has Machida ever been hurt? I've seen a few of his fights and the guy seems like he never gets *touched*, let alone hurt. Goddamn he's good, he could be on top for a very, very long time. Wow.

Machida has never been hurt whilst in UFC. He's won 17 out of 17 rounds, and is just insane. I definitely think he could be champ for years. Rampage is up next but meh...

as for fedor, there's really no one outside of UFC at the moment who I think can beat him. He's rumored to be fighting barnett soon...not interested in that at all. there's a few guys in UFC who could have a shot, but i don't think they're seasoned enough yet (Brock, Velasquez, etc.), and those guys might be able to challenge him in time. However, for now, more repeats of Fedor cleaning out the non UFC HW division. Sad

isnt fedor not getting any good fights because of contract issues (keeping him out of ufc)? when do those end?

yeah, he's never been contracted with ufc. his management and dana white don't get along, fedor gets seven figs a fight, which like no one in ufc gets, etc. i hope if we do see him, it won't be too long from now. he's no spring chicken.

question and comments and definitely factual errors on my part

why hasnt fedor rematched anybody? as far as ive seen the only rematch was vs that japanese dude fedor 'lost' to due to cut, then fedor raped him in like 5 seconds. so why hasnt fedor rematched somebody like crocop? out of his own mouth, crocop was his toughest fight, so they gotta rematch it. maybe my impression is that anybody who fights him knows that theyre dominated so they dont want a rematch

id like to see fedor fight hong man choi again. im unaware of choi's personal aptitude, but my read on the fight was that if choi trained expertly on avoiding the submission he would probably knock fedor the fuck out

i have no clue about who's retired and who has contracts with whom, i just wanna watch fedor kick some fucking ass. he's pretty much the only reason i watch any mma

Sick. Rampage has chosen to give up his title shot, and will instead be a coach on the 10th season of the Ultimate Fighter vs. Rashad Evans, with this being a heavyweight season. He had the option of title shot or doing TUF 10 and facing Rashad at the end of the season, and chose fighting Rashad, which I think is the end of year show.

Who's stepping in to face Machida? Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, and that will go down in October, in L.A. Hopefully Rua can get back into 2005/2006 form...if so, this will be an insane fight.

stevenson/diaz was good, as was lytle/burns, didn't bother watching the TUF fights, don't give a fuck.

all i know is, mma this summer is gonna be fucking great.

practically none, sanchez looked pretty untouched in the end

guida having long hair covered up what had to be a few huge gashes from those elbows when he was in sanchez's guard.

re Pride fight: anything with Takanori Gomi knocking little dudes the fuck out, can't think of anything specific, but they had pretty much everyone: Cro Cop, Fedor, Henderson, Wanderlei, Shogun, etc... Fox Sports usually replays them if you get that channel.

good call on cro cop. haven't seen anybody in the heavyweights dominate with kicks so much. he almost doesn't do anything but kick his opponents faces off. really hope he rematches fedor. from the looks of the fight tho i doubt cro cop would ever want to rematch fedor since he was basically dominated the whole time, and fedor was able to shut down his kicks almost completely. i doubt being on the defensive is good for cro cops style

who knows, we may end up seeing lesnar/fedor sooner than we had hoped, i can't see a way that this doesn't turn out to be an utter shitshow/catastrophe/annihilation for Affliction.

still, fedor's management and the ufc coming together and finally making this work seems nearly impossible. i don't think strikeforce has fedoresque money waiting for him, and i really don't want to see him doing freak show bullshit in japan again. i really want him in the ufc Sad

I want to see Fedor vs Voldemort.
The deathtouch might be too much for Fedor.

Oh, and GSP vs Kimbo.
Might be GSP's first big challenge.

GAWD! I almost forgot: Lesner vs Anderson the Spider-Man.
So much could happen in one fight.

How the hell do they not have backups? Pretty bad management IMO to not have backups. I'm unsure of how MMA works though so I could be way off, but if backups are even possible they are then a must

IMO Ken Shamrock should be everybody's backup

It's a shame Tito is out of the game. IIRC, he said he could be ready to fight Fedor in like six months or something. I suspect he would get clobbered with the quickness, though

wuf, there's really no one available with the drawing power of barnett, and no one that will really provide a plausible matchup with fedor. it really sucks for the tons of people that made flight arrangements, hotels, cars, etc. as well as the fighters.

rumor has it that affliction has opted out of the fighting business, and they'll be allowed to be a sponsor in UFC again. earlier rumor was that strikeforce would be swallowing up affliction, while retaining the strikeforce name. all i know is august is going to be insanely interesting...

What would they do if Fedor beat Barnett? Does MMA talent come and go quickly, would they find somebody somewhere willing to fight whom they could plausibly promote, or would they just wait for a rematch?

They could find someone to promote afterwards, but Affliction would need months. Like they were discussing Fabricio Werdum as a fill-in, but they (Affliction) would need months to build that fight.

On another note, apparently there isn't a Strikeforce/Affliction merger in the works, and Affliction is a UFC Sponsor again. No clue what happens to all the guys in Affliction, though.

Don Frye is officially my new favorite person in the whole wide world

http://www.mmaweekly.com/blog/2009/07/don-frye-volunteers-to-fight-fedor.asp

Quote:
"If Tom was smart, he'd have me fighting Fedor instead of whoever he's hiring on a one week notice," Frye told MMAInsider. "My phone works if he wants a real fight with someone who sell a fight in four days, somebody who will beat that bald-headed commie too."

In fact, Frye said the only reason he was fighting Lawal was to get an eventual shot at Emelianenko.

"He ain't seen anything I have to offer," continued Frye. "He built his whole reputation (as a) waffle house chef. They've been serving him up ham and eggs with a side of canned tomatoes. I'll bring it. And if he can bring it, you'll have the best fight you've ever seen on the planet."

Anybody know of any good MMA forums? I just default Sherdog, but like all big forums, there are so many dumbasses there. So basically I need somewhat smaller, meaner, and more hardcore forum because that's where you get a lower percentage of dumbasses who speak before they think

A post from a different forum

Notes from Dave Meltzer:

This deal had been talked about months ago. There was several meetings between the UFC and Affliction including one that Couture tried to put together. One of the deals, around the time of the Arlovski vs Barnett fight that fell through, was that Affliction would cease to promote in exchange for being allowed to sponsor UFC fighters and get Affliction shirts on their shows.

- They had several meetings that didn't go well, including one before UFC 100 that ended really badly. The UFC knew that the Barnett vs Fedor show was going to be Affliction's final show so they didn't bother trying to counter program it with free tv.

- Right after UFC 100 there was another meeting where Affliction would cancel the show because the advance ticket sales were low and they knew they were going to lose their ass on ppv. They wanted to save face by letting Dana have Barnett vs Fedor on a UFC show and let them have some of the other fights on the Affliction card at future UFC ppvs and say that they had merged.

- The main problems where that the UFC weren't going to take Fedor under those circumstances. Why put him on a UFC show when he has only one fight left on his contract, plus his contract was crazy by UFC standards, he gets distribution rights and other rights that the UFC simply weren't going to accept.
The other reason the deal fell apart was Tom Atencio demanding that Dana publically apologize to him.

- Affliction then opened talks with Strikeforce. Strikeforce didn't go for the deal as they didn't want to pick up those huge contracts.

- The Barnett steroid failure was a god send because it gave them a face saving excuse to call off the show that they had been looking to get out of previously.

- Dana assumed the Strikeforce/Affliction deal was done but around Friday morning Affliction called him up and struck a deal.

- Dave believes it is legally somewhat similar to WWF purchasing WCW in that they can pick and choose which contracts they want to pick up.
They won't take Fedor right now but if they can get him down to a new contract they'll take him. Doesn't imagine they'll pick up Arlovski,Sylvia and Linland's contracts. Vitor Belfort they'll probably take as they've been talking about bringing him back for a while.

- Affliction contracts are non exclusive. Dana won't put a guy on his show who isn't exclusive to the UFC. In theory they can work for Japan or Strikeforce with the way the contracts are structured.
