The 80/20 rule applies to sexual orientation?

"i hold a firm belief that 100% heterosexuality and 100% homosexuality are both minorities in the big picture. i think sexuality has a scale and most people fall somewhere in the middle of it. i'd say my sexual attraction is about 50/50 ..... which i also think is rareish. most people i've met fall somewhere in the 70-80% liking one sex range.

I didn't write the above paragraph. I'd say I'm in the defined "majority" (prefer girls of course!). I like girls very very much. But I'm also a dancer, and we all know about them...

So do you guys agree? 100% heterosexual or homosexual is a relatively rare phenomenon?

I think this isn't true, I think it's a misconception because...
1. People like to say they are "Bi" for attention.
2. The mainstream seems to enjoy Bi-ness and show it whenever possible.
3. There are a lot of people I know (Guys and Girls) who aren't attracted to the same sex in the slightest.

most people will have a prefrence, but it is definitly a product of social conditioning and enviroment.

Social conditioning: the romans didnt have gays and str8's they had givers and takers - as long as you weren't a 'taker' you could 'give' it to anything and still be match.

enviromental factors: in the same way, lifers in jail who may have been bikers or homophobic jamacan rap stars on the outside, have relationships and fall in love with guys in jail.

I would be willing to bet that the adamant 100%er's are probably closer to the 80/20 or more your refering to. I'D also would be willing to bet that the most secure males, (like bigred) would push the boundaries of, and be much closer to 100% of heterosexuality. I'm willing to bet that it's the fear of their true feelings that make some of the most hateful and homophobic guys act and say what they do.

I say "I'd be willing to bet", because I have no proof of this and It's a poker forum.

it's not so much that you're a certain degree of homo or hetero, but that you like certain things that often correlate with one orientation.

like some dudes are unattracted to other dudes, yet they like anal stimulation. because our lay classification of orientation is a little off, some will say those dudes are representing a degree of homosexuality when they're really not.

I've done a lot of gay things in my day and i don't think im anywhere near 80/20 gay.

For years the estimate was 2%.

The GayLesbian community was pushing for a 10% published number for a couple decades.

My suspicion is that pressure on social desensitization toward homo/bisexuality and fetishism is leading to experimentation in our populace, and subsequently irreversable imprinting by individuals onto odd sexual options.

My belief is that many people go through a pubescent period when they will stick it into anything, or stick anything inside themselves. And with so many absent or unjudgemental 'enlightened' parents, more children have the opportunity to do just that. That being the case, I have no doubt the 20% figure will eventually be reached .

That Roman outlook may expose some truth. Perhaps there's still just 2-4% gays and lesbians, and also a growing percentage of 'givers' and 'takers' who are unable to restrain themselves from new sexual stimulation options, and have no obvious social reason to restrain themselves from experimentation. And there's always the small percentage of lonely people that will "take" just because at least somebody finally likes them.

Prediction for new options over the next 30 years: children and animals. You read it here first. I figure if a culture can't find a reason to stick to the opposite sex, it may be hard pressed to find a defensable reason to stick to adult humans. Very Happy

In my experience, 10% of people who define themselves as gay or mostly gay feels about right. Having said that, I was reading New Scientist recently and it was something like 19% of men and 33% of women said they had some homosexual feelings.

As for the original post, I think 80/20 is too close, and 97/3 is maybe closer, but the basic premise I think is true for the great majority of ostensibly straight people.
