| I ordered two books on Omaha H/L with an amazon gift card after doing a promotion. I should be getting them in a few days, after I read them I'll let you know which one(s) are good. |

lesson 1: A2s pre-flop is a good starting hand
lesson 2: don't raise out of position
lesson 3: only raise in position with a very strong starting hand to build a pot |

You mean preflop or ever without the nuts?
Thankyou for all the replies for now. I wont be buying a book yet because i dont know if i like the game enough to try and learn it. Im mostly interested in basic strategy websites so i can have a go at the 0.01/0.02 PL stars games to see how i do.
Thanks for that link im checking it out now |

Starting hands: you can use this point counting system
http://www.homestead.com/ehutchison/OmahaSystem.html
Basically in omaha hi-lo you want starting hands that can scoop both the hi and the lo hand.
AA23 double suited is the best starting hand.
Strong hi only starting hands are also playable, but starting hands that are good for lo only are not good.
You want to stay away from hands that has a lot of mid cards - for example 6789 is not a good hand. It gives you a lot of str8 possibilities but if you hit a straight you will only get 1/2 a pot because there is probably a low out there.
A lot of times low hands are splitted, so you may be quartered, so even if you have the nut low you may be losing money. This should not discourage you from playing low nuts strong, but if the pot is 3 way and all are raising you should be careful with the nut low.
Another type of hand that costs me a lot of money when I start playing omaha was hands that were 2nd or 3rd best on both high and low.
For example the board is 3s,7s,8c, Js, Kd.
My hand is ad4s Qs Qd.
You have the 2nd best low and 3rd best high, and the pot continuesly get reraised by two players, you are probably a sucker both ways. |

I dont think you quite get how little i know about this game.
I folded the best hand once because i didnt know the rules properly and thought it was crap and i called with a 4 card nut low + 4 card straight when i forgot you had to use 3 from the board. Overall losing but learning lol. |

Ive had a look at the hutchison system and it doesnt seem to place any value on connectors. I would have thought a hand like AKQJ in late position would be good to see a cheap flop and hope for a high only flop especially if it is 2 suited. I can see these hands being useful because if you hit, you hit big and if you dont you throw them away.
e.g. if you hit 2 pair you also have a nut straight draw and there is probably only 1 low card on the flop.
Is this taken care of in the high card point of the system or should i add these in myself... or is my thinking wrong |

Next question: Post flop strategy.
Is it generally a good idea to fold to any decent sized bet if you do not have the nuts/ draw to the nuts in at least one direction in this game.
I played earlier today (am now a winning player at 5PL stars ) and had a hand where i had the second nut low with a nut flush draw on the flop. i bet small to build the pot. Turn pairs the board and someone bets strong with 2 callers. I fold. Some guy wins the high with a full house (no low) and someone else wins the low with the second nut low. |

| The point system does take the high cards in account. They are great to play in late position. Generally if you hit hard on the flop, the best low draws can do is runner runner. I mostly play limit so this is more of a problem for me than it would be you, assuming you are still playing PL. |

Good fold, quartering the pot 3 handed will make you want to commit suicide. |

I am.
At the moment i am still very much in the "google phase" of learning where i type in PLO8 and read every page that comes up. What are PLO8 SnGs like? Is the play as bad as the ring games and where do i find them? |

after a night of losing multiple buyins playing turbo sngs, daluchy and i spent like 3 hours at the omaha h/l play money tables without even the faintest clue how to play. it was awesome! later we played a $1.75 18 player sng and i somehow won it LOL ... i still don't really know what's going on when i play, but it was a nice break from holdem.
now i'm gonna go to sleep because 7 am is getting a little late |

| well played lol. Im getting there i think. I can beat these tables ok now its just a case of playing as many tables as i can and waiting for a hand good enough to get it all in. I usually end up a few BBs down on most tables where i havnt hit a hand and massivly up on one table where i have. |

If you're going to play for play money, you'd probably want to try the fixed limit. In PL, they tend to keep raising & reraising preflop until everyone is all in.
Also I would try a PS play money sng, fold the first 20 hands(while the idiots are being had) and then try to play as best you know
If you're playing correctly, you should be folding more hands than you do in holdem. Omaha HL can be more boring, but use the extra time to take notes on the guy who calls an enormous bet with just 2 pairs when the board is holding a straight & flush draw.. And don't let that guy scare you off pots !! Take notes of the guy who always has the nut flush, nut boat, etc.. and when he bets.. run unless you have the nuts.. |

A. Learn How to fold. There are freaking 9 cards to be used 2 ways. Your "pretty good" hand actually blows if it is not the nuts or darn close.
B. Don't even start for more than a blind without some kind of 4way going in your hand. What I mean is that your 4 cards need to start at least 4 reasonable hands to even bother paying more than a blind. AA23 double suited starts off as 5 options:
1. Pairs/boats with AA
2. Flush A
3. Flush B
4. Straight
5. Nut low WITH A Counterfeit defense
C. No one ever won the whole pot on A2 if low hand doesn't even show, or your A2 is counterfeited. Consider the nut low hand that you HAVE to be a Bonus that gives you betting strength. Drawing to a low hand is asking for trouble when betting is hi and you have a pair.
D. Betting hawg wild on a nut low on the flop with no supporting hi hand will get you counterfeited or quarterred.
counterfeited: when one of your low hand cards appears on board.
quaterred: splitting the low so you get 1/4 the pot.
E. This is a game for multitablers, since the best thing to do in this game is wait for a 4way hand to bet, or a 3way hand in position or if limped to. Get a magazine and play 4 tables.
F. The play money Omaha8 on PokerStars is so full of drama queens and social misfits that it can be a fun break from real money. |
