I realize now that my turn play looked extremely weak here so I wouldn't play it like this again. How would you have played this one?

Possible moves are:
1. check/raise flop big, if called...what's your turn move?
2. flop play the same, bet big on turn again
3. check/call flop and turn, maybe fold to a potsized bet on turn?
4. make min bets on flop and turn until hit an out

Any others? What are your thoughts/opinions on how to play this one?

I wouldn't open the pot with that hand from UTG, even shorthanded.

Otherwise, I think you played it fine. Your flop bet was a little big.. $8 may have worked there. A probe bet on the turn would have just cost you money, IMO. Maybe if you bet 1/2 you could have saved a BB or two but just as likely he would have raised you. Your odds (including implied) on the turn make that a call (you bet 28 to win 54 which is about 3:1?).
