Hi all. We're getting a bunch of basically beginners together to start a weekly game of Hold'em. We need a little advice though.
What's a reasonable buy in amount? $10, $15, $20?
Is it generally accepted to have the "second place" player get his cash back, and winner takes the rest?
Also, for chips, do we just give out the buy in amount, or since it's such a little amount do we give out a larger amount? I guess it doesn't matter in the end.

| How wealthy are you? I'm 19, and we usually do $5-$10 depending on whether or not a couple people are short on cash. And yes, we play that second gets their money back. |

@ $5 you can even run two of them in a night if the first one moves too fast.

We were all just discussing and I think we're gonna try $10 to start. We can always adjust it from there.
One thing. They want to use Ante rather than Blinds. So say, 1000 chips, the ante on each hand starts at 10 chips.
I think it's silly, but it's not really debatable with them. That's just what they prefer. In any case, I'm guessing the Ante amount should be raised (doubled?) every 10 hands or so, just like Blinds?
How should this change my strategy? There'll be more guaranteed chips in every pot, that's for sure. |

At my home games we have min $10 buy ins (unlimited buyins if you bust out), two .25 blinds and just a normal ring game setup. seems to work fine for us, and we're all poor college students  |

Well with a name like Masticore. That means you're finally making the jump from MTG. Did Dave Williams have anything to do with that?

Most of my friends throw $40-$50 in a bucket and we have a tournament that pays top two either 60/40 or 70/30 percent. |

Sounds like you want to play a cash game v. tournament.
$10 buy in sounds fine. Use $.10/.15 blinds. NLHE. I would also suggest a max buy-in. You don't want Mr. Moneybags to plunk down $75 and muscle everyone out of every pot.
You can use 3-4 chips. White =$.05 Red=$.10 Green = $.25 and if you have another color you can make them $1, or just play with the coins.
Antes are silly for holdem at that level of buy-in. You will all just be drawing cards. You won't get anyone who sees a flop out of the pot and almost everyone will be seeing a flop.
You may have a fun time but don't rely on that experience to improve your overall game. |
