Quoted from another of my post...here are some of the best things you can do to improve your play (starting from ground zero).

1. As a general concept (this will be reinforced when you learn about M), play tight early on, and loosen up as the blinds get big. Don't be afraid to push once your stack is 10xBB or less - infact your only plays at this point are check, fold, or push.

2. Learn about preflop hand strength. HOH is a good start for this. Or Kill Phil. There's tons of other material out there as well. You can even do a search on our forum for posts by AoKrongly about the 19 playable hands. As a rule, AJ+ and KQ+ are the worst hands you should be playing early on. Raise them IN POSITION (see 3) if it's folded to you. If it's limped, raising or folding can both be reasonable. If it's raised, look for at least AQ to call; reraise only with big hands or big reads.

3. Next, learn about position. Really, just sticking to the following is a good start: Cut the table in half in your mind: the blinds and the last three positions are places you can make moves IF other people haven't committed many chips to the pot. The rest of the table is for only playing GOOD cards. KQ+ and AJ+ at a minimum. As people get knocked out, remove one position from the "I can't make plays here" side until you're short-handed and it's viable to raise any two from anywhere.

4. Next, learn about M. HOH2 is good for this. This will help you learn to play as your stack becomes small relative to the blinds.

5. Next, learn about first-in vigorish and folding equity. These will be huge boosts, and combined with the rest of the above should let you beat the game at the $55 level
