Hey,
I just wanted to share a new strategy I am trying out on PP. Its not a strategy for making money but it is a strategy to get more play time for less money for those of us who really just need to play allot more and haven't gotten to the stage where we can really expect positive earnings consistantly.
My game is NL hold-em and in B&M I specifically like competing in the tournaments more than the ring games. I think I have expressed this before. Frankly, I just don't enjoy limit as much.
I seem to be able to win fairly consistantly at NL ring but I'm not 100% comfortable with spending my money online to play it just yet because I have had allot of suck-outs happen and I don't have a bank roll to sustain it through to the end right now.
I didn't want to go to another site and play for smaller stakes because I wondered if there was allot to beating a nickel n' dime sort of game. Maybe someone here can enlighten me on that thought...
Anyhow, my new strategy (I'm sure I'm not the only person to think of this) is to play in the ring game only long enough to get one or two buy-ins to the new step tournaments on PP.
The buy-in for step 1 is 11+1 so for $12 I get to enter into a fairly stable tournament that lasts for 1-2 hours per step, probably longer beyond step 2 which is as far as I have gotten so far (I placed 1st in my first step 1 tournament last night which got me the buy-in to step 2). I think this gives me the most bang for my buck in terms of $$ spent to learn the game. As I stated before I am primarily concentrating on the NL game and tournaments in particular so I think the step tournaments are a great way to invest your money for learning the game further. In the step tourny's people play allot more like what I've seen in B&M tournaments where the first place prize pool is in the thousands+ whereas in the single table SnG's people are all about turn-over and getting in as many hands/tourny's as possible. I suppose the $9000(10,000?) 1st place prize for finishing first in the 5th step is the main factor in this change in play.
Anyway, this is what I am doing now and I think if I play my ring game really tightv and just wait for opportunities to make my buy-ins I can play for a loooong time on my $50 or whatever and hopefully either eventually place in the money on the steps but definately end up improving my overall NL game allot more on a dollar by dollar basis. Just about every education will cost you time and allot of money and I have money to invest to learn but I want to get the absolute best deal for my dollar while getting that education and this may be it for me right now.
Any comments would be appreciated and I can explain more about the steps if anyone doesn't know and would care to hear about it.

I think your strategy is a good one. Just be sure to play the ring games at the lowest stakes tables so that you won´t lose your 50 bucks in a weeks bad run.
Also, the strategy makes you better primarly at tournament play. Ring games are much different and I think that if you keep yourself in the low stakes section and mainly play ring games, that is just as good considering your profits.
There is a slight lack of logic in your reasoning:

If you´re that sure of being profitable in ring games, then you shouldn´t have to worry about losing in the long run. That is as long as you stay in the games that your bankroll can afford, which you must do even if you just play to pay the buy-ins.
I think it all comes down to what you like the most, and which field you are aiming to be good in. Tournaments are fun, and if you like them and want to be a profitable player, your strategy is great. But someone who likes the ring games and wants to specialize on that would certainly need another strategy.

Hey Whaggo,
Yeah, I realize the lack of logic in what I am saying and have been trying to analyze how I've changed my play because I have been able to consistantly win enough money every day for 2-3 step tournament buy-ins. That being said then I should be able to consistantly win in the Ring game anyway. So, yeah, I have to look at how I am playing differently when I have a set 24-36 dollar goal in mind for the day vs. "lets see how much money I can win" for the day.
Strange and I hope I figure it out as it will no doubt improve my overall wins and game strategy.
