| I don't remember all of the details, but I can give you what I remember from last night. I was in a No Limit tournament and i had about 7000 in chips and one guy at the table had about 14000. I get rockets in the dealer position and this other guy is one position to my left. it comes around to me and I raise the pot 3x what it was (I raised about 400 I think). This guy comes over the top of me and bets 2000. I figured, wth, all in. He calls. This guy has 4 and 9 of clubs. The flop comes Ks Kc Qc. And then he gets his other club on the river.... I know that getting a flush isn't so hard to do, but getting your rockets cracked by 4 9 suited was rough for me. I was playing good poker all the way until then. I probably should have just called his bet, but I didn't want to give him the chance to crack my aces. I was hoping he wouldn't call my all-in, but if he did I figured I wasn' t in too bad of shape. Oh well, guess we're onto the next tourney..... |

Sucks to be you. If someone is willing to put all his chips in when you *know* you're the favorite, you take him up on his offer. Let the cards fall how they may.

And then, too.

The only way to absolutely for sure remove that possibility is to remove the other player from the game. I'm thinking with sticks or maybe stones.
He called all in with a almost-good-enough-to-be-marginal hand. You are not the loser of that hand, regardless of where the chips ended up. |

I agree with the general sentiment here. If you can get yourself 4 to 1 odds to double up, you do it every time. Without hesitation.
I think a lot of people are fooled because of the skill element of Hold 'Em. They think if they play the right way all the time, eventually they'll never lose. But there's always a big luck factor as well, and rather than fear it, you need to exploit it. If you can give yourself good odds to make money, well - in the long run, that's how you become a profitable poker player. So if you have pocket aces and someone's willing to go all in with you, do it. Every time. If it gets cracked five times in a row, it's bad luck, but over the long haul you will make a lot of money this way.
In short, I like your raise here, and hate his call. He's a maniac who loves to gamble. You took a bad beat.
Sorta funny footnote. I was in a local tournament playing a guy who was a very strong player, and I went all in with aces, over the top of his pre-flop raise. He called me with king queen suited. You wouldn't suspect it, but AA is just as strong to win against KQs as it is against 94s. Anyway, he flopped a straight and knocked me out. Later on when we were discussing this, he was telling me "I wouldn't have pushed all in, even with aces." This is amazing to me. I had a better hand and made the aggressive move (the raise); he had the worst of it and called, even though this was effectively an all-in for him as well (our stacks were close to identical). You'll always have people saying one thing and doing another. Don't listen to them, or your passive instincts. Raising a pot gives you two ways to win: your opponents folds, or they call and you take advantage of your statistical edge. If you know you have the best hand (as you always do, pre-flop, with AA) - you should raise every bet. |

Definately, cash game or tournament doesnt matter, if he raises 1/3 of your stack and you have AA, get those chips in the pot. You win far more than you lose, but it always sucks and you always remember how they lost.
To make you feel better, I had my AA cracked twice this weekend on party. Once by Q3o, and once by 57o; both times they flopped middle pair and caught a second pair on the turn. They have been added to my fish list, new ATMs for steve. |

You absolutely want him to call your all in. At least you should want him to. |
