Does anyone else seem to go through these swings of playing great in ring games but losing tons of SNGs, then playing great in SNGs and losing in ring games, repeat ad nauseum?
A month ago or so I was cleaning up in NL ring games and losing pratically every SNG I played. Now I'm winning a lot in SNGs, but losing every time I sit at a NL Holdem ring game. I'm a ton better and more experienced in Holdem than I am in 7 card stud, but recently I've just been playing 7 card stud ring games since I'm winning there, instead of apparently wasting my money in NL ring games now. Although it is worth noting that I was having the ring game success on a different site than where I'm doing well in tournaments.
I've been in this pattern for about a week now, whereas a week ago NL ring games were profitable for me. Can't I just be able to play both well at the same damn time?! |

i've noticed this as well, and for me it, it seems like i have "variance" in batches. in other words, i'll have a week of hitting my 2/3 outers (these are such happy weeks! ) and then hit a week losing when i'm 70% to win.
so, i bounce back and forth, or try a new game or level. it seems to break up the variance. |

Yep, I'm in a seemingly permanant state of that.
I always do incredibly well in MTTs and SnGs (I can't remember not finishing in the top 10% of MTTs and getting to heads up in SnGs).
But I can never make money in the ring games, probably because I have just never practiced playing them at all. I always work on my tourney strategy. |

I hinted something similar to michael's experience on my last post here. Michael knows very well that i've been struggling at SnG. Thanks to michael's and many others' (FTRs) help, i was able to turn that around, but my winning streak at ring games suddenly came to a halt.
I'm playing Stars SnG and 25NL at PP, so i don't even think about PP playing card tricks or anything, but it's kind of ironic.
A while back when i was doing ok at SnG, my NL ring games were sucking my bankroll dry.
Since yesterday, i was getting dealt nothing but rags. Play the player? With what? 82o, 73o all the time? Haven't been dealt anything better than pocket jacks so far... all my draws have gone bust as well, for the exception of 78s which turned flush lost to a higher backdoor flush.
Maybe it's one's mental state or something. Maybe some of us just don't know how to turn off SnG mode when we are at groove at SnGs, play ring games the same way you play SnG.. don't look too smart to me. |

Same here. I can swing $2-300. Make a killing on ring games and hit a cold streak. Win a bunch of SNG's then find myself repeatedly on the buble in 4th place. I've always managed to make in back in Bonus $ and wins but it happens frequently. I think its just part of the game. Now imagine how much money you would have if the house wasn't taking a piece of the action.
Just don't become a chaser! If you record a loss do not move up to higher limits or higher SNG buy ins. It will most likely compound your problem. |

| That's kind of what I'm talking about. I use to be just like that, Ripp, but now when I find my NL ring game groove and start cleaning up there, all of a sudden I'm not doing near as well in tournament games. |

| Anyone had run of crappy cards for three straight sessions? 3days straight, in total i played about 20hrs of poker. I haven't been dealt one single pocket aces or kings. I had one AKs and i think couple AKo. Losing losing losing ring games, getting killed here. Anyone had this kind of streak? I'd be breaking stuffs if i wasn't doing good at SnGs. By the way, i'm only talking about ring games, SnGs been pretty good to me the past few days. |

ring games kill me.. i don't know why, but i can't win consistantly there. I think i get too anxious, over play cards and overbet my hands.. Kind of like slowlyg choking myself. |

And I'm just the opposite. In ring games I know its a matter of time and patience. I can sit through hand after hand in a ring game and fold mediocre cards. I know when they start coming again, I'll be in the money.
In tournaments and SNGs, I get this feeling of impending doom that makes me push too hard to build the stack. I start playing bad cards, trying to steal, hoping. etc. |

When I think of it, online at least, I think ring games tend to favor playing the cards (and playing tight), and tournaments favor playing the player / stack.
So, based on the area of skills that you're better in, success from one to the other can vary greatly.
Likewise, if you adjust your game from one to the other, switching back can leave you in a period of adjustment. |
