What is the best way to play in Rebuy tourneys? I normally play very tight, patient poker and do very well in normal tourneys. I don't seem to do as well in Rebuy tourneys, because when all the crazy players go all in against each other, one of them doubles up, and the other one just buys back in. Should I be more aggressive?
Example Hand:
I had AK with about 1500 chips. I raised it from MP. A 800 stack goes all in. A 4000 stack goes all in, a 1500 stack goes all in. It comes back to me.. and I figure I'm of course against pairs and have far less than 50% chance of winning. In a normal tourney, of course no way do I play this hand. I laid it down, and the players flipped over AQ, AJ, and 99. Surprisingly the AJ won with 4 to a flush. (I would have won with the A of the suit...)
Is that a call I should concider in a rebuy tourney? |

Personally, its an automatic call for me in a rebuy period. Hell, if I haven't gained any money from my starting amount I'd consider calling with worse unpaired hands as well, depending on the buyin amount, soley because of all the previous callers. If you lose it, oh well, you can rebuy in and still have the same stack you started with. But if you win it you've nearly quadrupled up and can then tighten up and probably come out of the rebuy period with a nice stack.
As long as you have the bankroll to rebuy multiple times in every rebuy you play in, I think its best to be willing to gamble in situations like this. The time to tighten up is after the rebuy period and also if you become a big stack during it. |

| call for sure, you can always rebuy, and if you dont have the money to rebuy then dont be in a rebuy tourny. At the end of each round i also like to buy/add on, any way i can get more chips in one of these MTT's is a go for me. |

Also it sounds like you're not rebuying immediately to start things off, as you just have a 1500 stack. Personally I feel that's almost a must for rebuy tournaments. Its a free double up, and adds to the potential that you can win with your big hands.
For example, lets say soon after the tournament starts you double up against someone that has rebought immediately. Then 20 minutes later, after just breaking even during this time period you double up again off of a big stack. If you didn't rebuy immediately the first win gives you just 3000 (which you could've already bought) and then the next one puts you at 6,000. But if you rebought immediately that first win puts you at 6000 and the second puts you at 12,000. In basically any rebuy tourney with an hour long rebuy period, a stack of 12k before the addon will almost certainly put you into the upper echelon of stacks heading into the rest of the tourney, which is a nice place to start off.
Rebuying immediately is like a free (in terms of play and cards, not money wise) way of doubling up early and looking to build upon your success. |

Don't play rebuys if you can't afford at least 4 rebuys. I would say rebuy once initially. Twice more times after you bust and give yourself an add-on at the break. If you can't afford to make those rebuys don't play.

I give myself a couple rounds to get some chips, it that doesnt happen then i will rebuy. And I always add-on.
If you are going to play an R&A always expect to rebuy at the very very least once. Usually twice for me. And add on. for sure. So you are looking at least 3 to 5 times the buy in. It thast too much dont play. You wont stand a chance. |
