Just need to clarify something that came up in a THE home game last night. One player asked whether, at showdown, it was required that both hole cards be revealed.
Example:
Table holds 2, 4, 7, Q, A.
At showdown, first player shows pair Q.
If other player holds A, 6, are they required to show both, or can they just turn the ace to declare victory? |

I think it's show both
otherwise you could turn over a ten and say "ten high" when you really had the pair of queens |

I dont think there is a requirement, but...
Anyone can look at ANY hand that reaches showdown... Winner or Loser... (note: Thats showdown, not wins [aka, river bet that everyone folds = no lookie])
Note: This is thought of as rude |

True - and this is part of what was being asked last night. Since a good poker game already involves so much equivoque, is there a rule to stop players doing this trick (claiming a lower, yet still winning, hand)? |

And also, any cards going to showdown can be asked to be seen like the other post said so I'm pretty certain you have to show both cards. |

Ok, thanks iopq. Makes sense really, I guess I just wanted to check. I couldn't completely remember if I had seen players show one card in TV tourneys or not. Maybe that was if they were folded to before showdown?
Anyway, thanks to all for clarifying that mucked cards can be seen. Like you say Laeelin, it's probably pretty poor etiquette to do this on a regular basis, but it is worth knowing anyway just in case I find myself up against a bad cheater! |

| You bettor be careful with that I have been in poker rooms where you hand was what you named it, therefore you shove one card that becomes you hand, if it's beat you're shit creaked, plus people get pissed if you slow play and you might get your ass kicked in some of the rougher back room card places... you never know what might happen at one of those damn places... |

Yes you have to show both cards. The person is "paying" to see both your cards, not just seeing who wins.
Also lets say somone bets on the river in SB and is called by the BB, if the small blind has one pair and just flips over one of his cards, you can ask to see the other one even though you know the 1 pair beats you, just to see his hand. |

| I believe in a casino you must show all hole cards in order to take the pot with a winning hand |

Who is required to show their hand first?
Is it the person who bet first? Or is it the left of the dealer?
I hear both things and havent been sure which one is correct. |

the last know agressor shows first... so if i raised the river and got called i show and then the caller mucks or shows a bettor hand...

the rule in a casino is that you have to show both cards to claim the pot. unless all of your opponents muck. so technically you can show just the ace and if the other guy mucks, you can win. however, if anyone asks to see your kicker, you must show.
"angle shooters" have been known to exploit this rule by declaring that they have, e.g., a flush, without showing anything. their opponent mucks, then they are awarded the pot even though they have nothing. bottom line, if you ever call someone down at showdown, make sure you see both of his hole cards before mucking your own hand.
if it is checked down on the river, most casino rules say that the first person to the left of the dealer must show down first. however i have played at online sites (e.g. Full Tilt) where the last aggressor shows first, even if the river is checked down.
