Hi to all, I'm not a hold em player, but my son is. I just bought him a 650 chip set for his B-day. My question is what is the best chip ratio?
he plays friendly games at the house...5-7 players. use 4 or 5 colors?
break down...such as...
250,200,125,75....or
200,200,100,100,50??
200,200,150,50,50???
200,150,100,100,50???

Thanks for any help, Bill

It doesn't matter. If you find you need more chips later on, you can change the value of a certain color.

So blue chips which were 100 in value become 200 in value. Then you take away half of everyone's blue chips.

So it doesn't really matter what you pick, if a problem come up you can work your way through it.

if these are the types of games he is playing 4 colors will defiantely do fine. this will give him more then enough for cash games and the ability to do tourneys too.

i would go with somethink like

250 of one(usually white represents the lowest denomination"
150 of another color
150 of another color
100 of highest denomination(black or blue)

if he is a LIMIT hold em player then i recommend the following breakdown...

100 gray/light blue ($0.50)
400 white ($1)
100 red ($5)
50 green ($25) or black ($100)

most of the time they will be betting using the white chips. the gray/blue chips are just for the blinds. the reds are just for when the whites run out, say in a 10-handed situation. the green/black chips will only be used in tournaments. i guess if it's a toss up between green and black, go for black, they are more badass because they are worth a lot in a casino.

for example, say he hosts a $1/$2 limit game with 10 players and a $50 buy-in. each player would get:

10 gray/light blue @ $0.50 = $5
40 white @ $1 = $40
1 red @ $5 = $5

example 2, say he hosts $0.25/$0.50 limit game with 10 players, $10 buy-in:

10 gray/light blue @ $0.25 = $2.50
15 white @ $0.50 = $7.50
