First, a set up. Tonight was that $25k tournament on Platinum Poker that I mentioned. It started at 9 pm, unfortunately the same time as the WPT finals tonight ... but that's not a problem for me anymore.
This tournament has a prize pool of $25k, and only 181 players are in it, so I'm thinking I could possibly do very well here. I pump myself up for it, and get ready to play some great poker.
In the SECOND FUCKING HAND, this happens:
Game started at: 21:01:30 06/30/04
Game ID: 606060 20/40 TPPC 87 $25,000.00 , Table 18 (Hold'em)
Seat 3 is the button
Seat 1: pkrdlrfrmhll (2400).
Seat 2: Patriots Rule (3200).
Seat 3: falzonej (1760).
Seat 4: Shats (2480).
Seat 5: KilgoreTrout (2500).
Seat 6: loxster (2500).
Seat 7: michael1123 (2660).
Seat 8: GUI (2500).
Seat 9: UnDeRdAwG420 (2500).
Player Shats has small blind (10)
Player KilgoreTrout has big blind (20)
Player michael1123 received card:
Player michael1123 received card:
Player loxster folds
Player michael1123 calls (20)
Player GUI calls (20)
Player UnDeRdAwG420 folds
Player pkrdlrfrmhll calls (20)
Player Patriots Rule calls (20)
Player falzonej calls (20)
Player Shats folds
Player KilgoreTrout checks
*** FLOP ***:
Player KilgoreTrout checks
Player michael1123 checks (I plan a huge check raise here to make sure a flush draw won't call)
Player GUI checks
Player pkrdlrfrmhll checks
Player Patriots Rule bets (420) (Here I'm absolutely baffled. He's betting 3 times the size of the pot size, so I know he must have a big hand, or be completely insane)
Player falzonej folds
Player KilgoreTrout folds
Player michael1123 calls (420) (After thinking about it for a long time, I just call, positive that he's not on a flush draw and his bet is enough to scare flush draws out. I'm very concerned he flopped a higher set, but I want to get more info on the turn before I either fold or raise.)
Player GUI folds
Player pkrdlrfrmhll folds
*** TURN ***:
Player michael1123 checks
Player Patriots Rule bets (1040) (Comes out flying again, again confirming that he does indeed have a huge hand, and he thinks I'm on a flush draw. Here again I pause for a long time, because I don't want to risk going out early. I'm not calling unless I'm sure I have the best hand. I'm thinking he either has two pair or a high pocket pair that he slowplayed preflop in late position. The high pocket pair makes the most sense with him calling out of the big blind, so I decide to quit playing around, and get into this pot with him.)
Player michael1123 allin (2220)
Player Patriots Rule calls (1180)

I guess I should've posted this in the hand history section.
But come on, doesn't anyone want to pity me? |

It's a double-edged sword flopping a big hand early. Maybe you could post blind and fold for the first 45 minutes or so instead?
Better luck next time. |

michael - you have my pity, but i think he played his hand well. he did flop top two pair, after all. and from his standpoint, it's really hard to put someone on a set.
but that said, big hug for michael and a "you'll get em' next time, tiger"
seriously, your good hand got beat by a better hand. that's poker.
i'll throw one thing out, and i don't know if this is the best idea (i've been "experimenting" with it lately): in the very early stages of a tourney with small blinds, and still a full stack, on a small pocket pair, i'll bet 4xBB preflop, with the idea that i'll fold to a reraise. clearly, this is better in later position. if you hit your set, great. if not, and no one shows strength on the flop, you can frequently take it down with a pot sized bet.
would a 4xbb bet with your 3's have folded mr 96, who knows? |

I think 4xBB would be too much. But hell, maybe even 2x the big blind would've.
At a rather conservative online table, even though its against what Poker Books (or Fnord) will tell you, in early position without a limper behind me, I kind of like raising the minimum amount for any hand I call (as long as the size of the blinds are very managable for me).
That little raise may help keep out some callers that are planning to call with utter shit. Its not a tactic that's needed, or even useful, in B&M games, but they don't have all the fish that we do.
Wish I would've tried that here, but who knows, he may have called anyway. He's obviously pretty loose on what hands he calls preflop. |
