Right after that hand the table was split up, but i went to find him and asked him why he called my bet. His response was "I didn't place you on the ace." Ok so maybe he had a point considering I had bluffed a few times and had shown my bluff in the hopes I would get callers in situations like this in the future. When I told him he would have been equally screwed if I had: a K, a 6, a flush, or a higher pocket pair, he responded "I don't know how to play."

Thanks for pointing out the obvious buddy.

He was in 58th place after winning that pot and thus close to placing. Soon after he went all in with pocket 5s preflop and ended up losing to pocket Q, knocking him out of the tournament.

It hurts to get beat by the river. One of my favorite quotes is, "If there were no such thing as the river, I'd be a millionaire."

However, If you had just showed a couple of bluffs, I may have played the exact same way as him. The bets weren't too big (approx 2 x the big blind, even when you went all-in)

The perfect thing to do is show a bluff immediently before a big hand. The reason is so you can bet big and get callers. I'm sensing he did everything you wanted him to do, it's just unfortunate that he won.

Sorry, I should have specified.

If you get lucky enough to get a big hand immediatly after you just bluffed (and that's all it is, pure luck that your have a big hand after your bluff) then you have a perfect play ahead of you.

Yeah, I do that too, particularly early in a multitable tournament. If I go all in preflop (and I usually don't show), and then the next hand (or maybe even a few hands after) I hit a big hand, I'm going all in again, even if I'm first to act. People get frustrated with you, thinking your a complete maniac, and you're likely to get a caller or two with much weaker hands than they'd normally call an all in with. (Like A5 suited. Nice situation if you have pocket aces)

I don't risk this later in a tourney, but its really beneficial for me if I can double up early on. Then its a lot easier for me to pick up pots with bluffs, and to play a more aggressive game, betting out draws, and all that.
