I played a home game with some friends last night - just a couple of single table 10-man or so tourneys. This one was a $20 BI.
The villain on this hand was a complete donk - only time he plays I think is when we have these nights about 3-4 times a year. He's completely unpredictable, and while this was early in the tournament I had already seen him show down A-high once after calling on the turn and river (no missed draws).
Anyway, I have about 40bbs (pretty much the average stack) and he has me covered after taking down a couple of decent pots. I'm dealt ATo in MP and raise it up, and he calls on the button. Everyone else folds. I think the raise here is pretty marginal, but with the guys behind me so far showing down much worse hands than AT I was fairly confident that I would either be the best hand or not far off it. His calling range is probably the top half of the range of possible hands.
Flop comes T64r, so I pot it, and he calls again. Standard bet from me, and his call probably means he has something, but not necessarily strong. I would say Tx, 6x, 4x, Ax, Kx, any pair (over or under), any two face cards.
Turn is a J - not a great card for me. I bet again, figuring I'm still good against 70% of his range. He calls again, which probably narrows his range somewhat, and I'm starting to think I could be up against a hand. Maybe (or maybe not). But now I have only about 15bbs behind and the pot is over 50bbs, so even though I'm not crazy about felting with TPTK I'm going to have a hard time getting away from it.
River is another J, which doesn't change anything. If it helps his hand he already had me beat. So I figure my equity against his range is unchanged, and as I previously felt that was fairly good I push the rest in. He calls (naturally) and turns over JT and blows my TPTK out of the water and me out of the tournament.
My question - how should I have played this differently? Could/should I have avoided this? The turn bet in particular strikes me as one I perhaps should have played slower. |

Depending on how many player still to act, I probably dump it preflop although raising isn't terrible. I take it you raised the standard 3x BB?
As played, I would not have bet full pot on the flop, 2/3 should be sufficient on this relatively draw free board (unless he has 75). As you played the flop, I would have checked the turn and seen what he did and on the river, again I would have checked and called a relatively small bet. |

You should alter your bet sizing in some manner because ending up with 15 bets in a 50 BB pot is not a good result.
When bad calling stations have your TPTK beat you are supposed to lose money. |
