U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is attaching the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act to a bill that is expected to be approved by the Congress early this evening. PLEASE call your Senators today and tell them that they should oppose the Internet gambling bill being part of Port Security legislation.

If the Port Security bill passes, with the Internet gambling language included, your ability to enjoy poker online will be at serious risk.

Friday has been quite a roller coaster for all of us following the internet gambling legislation/language.

Senate Majority Leader Frist and House Speaker Hastert continue to attempt to attach extraneous matters to bills moving through both chambers. This includes some form of Internet gambling language.

It appears for the moment that the only viable major vehicle for this language be attached to is the legislation dealing with port security. The remainder of the large bills that will be considered before breaking for the elections have been finalized or passed (DoD Approps, DoD Authorization, DHS Approps, etc.)

As of Friday evening, reports indicate that Internet gambling language has been inserted into the port security legislation conference report.

Both chambers are still slated to end work late Friday or Saturday before they head back for the elections. It is unclear at this point exactly when they will gavel things closed until mid-November. Remember that they will be back after the elections for a lame-duck session.

What can you do at this point? Please feel free to continue to call the chief authors of the port security legislation and hope they can be convinced to not add extraneous matters to this important bill. In addition, you should call your own Senators and Representative to reinforce this message.

Try to remain respectful and not abuse the people who answer the phones. They are much more likely to pass along the message if you keep the tone polite.

Right now Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is working to attach the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act to a Port Defense Bill that will be voted on sometime this evening.

“There’s a high degree of concern on our behalf that Senator Frist is going to be able to push this through,” said Michael Bolcerek, president of the Poker Players Alliance. “We’re outraged. This is political gamesmanship.”

Later tonight, the rules committee will decide if the Prohibition Act will be added to a bill dealing with port defense. It won’t be added if it’s deemed too controversial, something the PPA believe is the case.

If the rules committee doesn’t think it’s too controversial, it will be added and the Port Security Bill will be voted on sometime around midnight. It will be the last vote of the evening.

The PPA is encouraging its members and poker lovers to get in touch with their lawmakers this evening. A list of every Senator’s number can be found at the PPA’s webpage http://www.pokerplayersalliance.org/.

looks like the house is working on the port security bill right now, thats what internet gaming is attached to. the senate looks like its going to pass it with a voice vote around midnight. watching cspan & cspan 2 right now.

Our political system is garbage. People vote for people they have never even heard of, about issues that don't even concern them.

this vote was almost exactly on party lines.. i thought it would be almost unanimous.. it barely passed the house, perhaps the senate can fillibuster it or put up more of a fight?

the bill is 244 pages long, ~30+ pages are devoted to the internet gambling. it is much stronger than any other version previously discussed.. it talks about blocking ISP, Credit Cards, along with EFT (electronic fund transfers).

Even if i wasnt for internet gambling, the section on being able to block certain websites seems likes communist china to me.

In skimming the bill, it looks like it will be put in to effect within 270 days of passage.. of course remember

this has just passed the house, it needs to go through the senate.

My concern is that the only person who mentioned gambling VOTED YES.

The governments ability to ban phsyical gambling allows this to happen. I for one cannot say the government has the right to ban one without the other.

The senate is talking about it right now on cspan2.

This bill is concerning because it is regulating/blocking internet transactions. International ones, at that.
