Suppose player 1 has 6h and 3d pocket cards and player 2 has 6c and 4s.
The community cards come 6d, As, 10d, 8h, 5s.
Player 1 and 2 have a pair of 6's. My question is can you use the ace on the board as a kicker or does your second pocket card count as your kicker? Who would win this hand?

The rule is make your best five card hand. So there hands are identical (save the suits of the sixes) and they split the pot.

you *must* use the best five cards. so the ace is the kicker.
player 1 shows
6h, 6d, As, 10d, 8h
player 2 shows
6c, 6d, As, 10d, 8h
another case is when the board is:
Ace King Queen Jack Ten, hearts. dosn't matter what the players cards are, it's a split pot. |
