All of these are at .50/1.00 NL tables
So I get AK in the BB...3 people in the hand...
flop comes A97, 2 clubs. I raise 5 bucks...one guy calls...turn comes a 2(not a club), I bet 10 bucks...guy waits and waits, then called. river comes a club, he pushes all in for the rest of this 2 bucks...I have to call...he had J2c...
At the other table I'm playing...
I hit AKs in the SB, just call...
9 10 K flops...I raise 5 bucks, guy pushes me all-in(about 20 more bucks), I call...
J turns, K rivers
guy shows 78o
Earlier today...I had pocket 10s...raise 2 bucks preflop, one guy calls...
Flop comes 378, I raise 5 bucks, guy comes over the top for 3 bucks more, I call...he had AKo and caught his ace on the river...
Ugh...this is not my day... |

Well first hand was poorly played, raise preflop and limit the competition. Don't pay off the flush.
All of these beats actually had outs to beat you. We've all been beaten by hands that needed to turn a doorway card just to have outs.

Well, I failed to mention that the hand had already been raised preflop on that first one.
But poorly played? I made the guy pay 15 bucks to see his club. |

But you paid him off. Those tables are tight/weak and usually two pair or TPTK is a great second best hand when faced with an allin. Live and learn.

That still doesn't explain how I poorly played the hand. I had the best hand, bet enough that he should have folded. He just happened to get lucky and catch his card. I'm really not quite clear on how you think I should have played the hand differently.
The hand gets raised preflop ahead of me, I have AKo, so I call. I catch my ace, raise huge, turn whiffs, I bet almost the size of the pot, the guy calls just about all of his money, and then gets lucky and catches his card on the river. How else do you play it? |

Heh. If he had pushed all-in for 20 on the river, I would have folded outright. But for 2 more bucks, I had to see what he was holding. |

Sitting with my last 15 bucks, I hit K7clubs in the BB. K98 rainbow flops. I raise 3 bucks, guy raises me to 6, I push all in, he called. He had A9, turned his 9.
Oh well, can't complain too much, I've had a very nice run over the last week and I'm ending this one in the + about 350 bucks. |

This hand was absolutely butchered. 78o is a marginal at best limping hand but he had no reason to fold it. I usually dont play unsuited connectors, but some people play them. This guy had no reason to fold pre-flop. You should raise this hand to prevent this type of "bad beat" |

Sure he had no reason to fold preflop, but for a 5 buck raise on the flop?
Then gambling about 2/3 of his stack on that draw once the flop hit after I raised twice the size of the pot?
Typically, those are the kind of people that pay us off...his odds were the same as hitting a flush...and I made him pay to see it. |

I imagine (pure conjecture) he put you on top pair weak kicker, since you did not raise preflop. He thinks you hit top pair (K-8,...possibly worse)and were trying to protect it by firing out a large bet - he decided to test your reslove by representing either the J-Q, TPTK or 2-pair.....yes it was reckless, you could have easily had K-9 or K-T...which would be my first thought with a limp then a big bet. What can you say some people like to live on the edge, semi-bluff/bluff and get lucky......but frankly I am more surprised (at least as surprised) by your call. Flop looks good for you until your $5 bet gets reraised AI...for what $15-20 more, pretty easy fold in my mind...TPTK with that flop is certainly not a lock...lots of people like to limp w/ cards smack dab where that flop hit. Anyway, just my assessment. |

Why be surprised? I made the correct call, didn't I? I had the guy picked off...I knew he was a loosey goosey and I was about 80% sure I had him beat. I was right. He just happened to catch his card. |

Sheesh...a little defensive....just trying to be helpful. It is true we now know what he had, but at the time you did not. I have been burned like this before, but it happens much less frequently now.
If I were in that situation with A-K and for some reason did not raise preflop...and lead out with a $5 bet then get reraised $20 (AI) I would not like it, but I would certainly fold. If I got out played then I got out played, but I would not risk my whole stack on A-K with that flop and how it played out. Even loose and reckless players get good cards, but again that is how I would have played it with the information given, without a read on the guy, knowing you...or even a hand history - I can't imagine playing that hand the way you did.
Yes, I am suprised at the call. You happened to be correct this time and he was on a draw....but he could have just as easily flopped a straight, 2-pair, a set....and he bet like he had it - if a $20 reraise is not enough to get you to lay down top pair, then what is? Put a different way - I would be much more comfortable doing the reraise or pushing all-in with TPTK than calling with it...do you see the difference? I understand that after you made the call it seemed like the correct thing since he was on a open ended straight draw - just trying to give you another way to look at it.
Anyway if you were just wanting to get the beat off you chest, forgive the intrusion and unwanted advice. |

The reason I called is because I knew what type of player he was. I had been playing against him at the table for about 45 minute or so, and had him pegged for a wild, aggressive, but not necessarily loose, type of player. I put him on either middle pair or the pair of kings with a lower kicker. Against a maniac like that, I'll make the call all day.
Like I said, sure I didn't know for sure that he didn't already hit the straight, but I was over 80% sure I had him beat. |
