My PC won't start up,it's stuck in a death cycle of rebooting, then going to the screen saying "your computer was not shut down properly last time, how do you want to start it"

with the options
-safe mode (3 types)
-settings of last successful startup
-start normally

NONE of these work. Help please! I really don't want to have to reformat.

If it helps, when I try to start it in safe mode, all the loading files come up until it gets stuck on WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\Mup.sys

Then it restarts again.

Open your nearest window. Take PC. Throw PC at open window. Problem solved.

This happened to me once and I had to re-format.

It's probably the driver after mup.sys, not that file.

I installed windows on a partion, tracked down whatever driver mine was stalling on, it just started crashing on the driver before it.

Good luck

Only if you're thinking about having sex with the Mac guy (or the PC guy, but he's sick so that doesn't make sense. unless you're into some weird shit).

i am having the exact same problem right now. when it started 2 days ago, i was atleast able to start it in safe mode and back up all the important stuff. Yesterday, though, i cant even start it in safe mode, and the XP cd gets stuck when trying to repair it. So i ripped out the hard drive and took an old one from work. It works fine now.

Do you have a windows bootable CD? --- Boot off the CD -- run a chkdsk /p if you get errors run a chkdsk /r

My other computer was having a similar issue yesterday. It was a dell. This is what the tech support had me do. It takes awhile. But it booted right up afterwards. If it doesn't work your hard disk may be toast.

Hard drive is pooched. Get a new one, reistall, put your old one in as well and keep trying to move everything over. The more you keep booting the worse it'll get. don't format! you may be able to save the info. It's all the boot sector thats crapping out.

my computer was blue screen of deathing me continuously when i tried to start it up maybe 6 months ago, was only 6 months old too. couldn't fix it so i reformatted. i have an inspiron 6000, all you have to do to reformat is push some buttons right after you turn it on, and it does an auto-reformat thing that takes like 10 minutes, and its good as new, i thought it was pretty awesome.

I used to get these problems with my computer all the time. I don't know how to fix it without the formatting option. But in case you do recover it I found out a very solid preventitive measure so you never have to worry about these kind of issues again. It's actually relatively simple to tell you the truth. You can get this done at most computer shops too. I know you can at Future Shop. So say they are the store of your choice. First, go to Future shop. Then, buy a Mac.

Could you PM me what Dell told you to do?

I tried to repair it using a couple of guides of the net but it didn't work ljfiowaentlsijfaoivcjx.

I don't want to reformat because I want to get the data off the harddrive. So I guess my only other option is to buy another cheap hard drive and format that and transfer the data over. Or something.

Make sure you partition this new drive (if it's over 20GB). You really only need 20 for the OS and programs. Then you can store your data on the partition. Reformatting becomes a small pain in the ass instead of a big one.
