This Forum needs a sticky, and I think it should be:
The basic types you meet. Themes and Variations
1. The smart, very aggressive guy. Usually has enough bankroll that he throws chips around like they grow on trees. Pots he is in will be big, and you don't need the nuts to play, but once in awhile he will have the nuts and too bad. Courage will be the deciding factor.
Variation: the not-so-smart guys who are tired of losing money to this guy, and decide that the way to ramp up is to imitate him. Beat these guys to death when they are obviously bluffing.
2. The old-timer. Often moves slowly, doesn't necessarily have high standards for starting hands. Has used experience in lieu of studying charts and odds. Will be caught playing ragged aces and gutshots somewhat often.
Variation: the Affable old-timer. Has a sort of running chatty commentary on the game going the whole time, e.g. telling you what his cards are (and telling the truth). This guy is very tough to beat -- he reps that he doesn't care that much and is just having fun, but is almost always making the right call/bet.
3. The WPT fan. Seems annoyed to be playing with such amateurs. Usually young, often looks like he could be in a boy band. Can beat this guy because his worst fear is getting bluffed off by a fish, and he will call big bets with not much.
There are more, of course -- but I don't pretend my expertise is sufficient. Let's collaborate. |
