I am officially done with online poker. I know have .43 sitting in my account at Royal Vegas and took so many bad beats last night that im just done. An example of some hands i lost with...

I lost on both a set of Aces, and a Set of Kings due to some moron catching a flush on the river

I lost on 2 different full houses....

the first one, i have pocket 10's, flop comes 10 KK, turn Q...guess what, someone has KQ and beats me

second one, i have pocket 8's flop comes 8 Q A, turn Q, River 3... and what do ya know, someone is sitting there with AQ

I just dont know what to do, no amount of betting would get the flush chasers to fold...and the same thing with the FH's obviously people arent going to fold trips or 2 pair, but having 2 full houses beat in the span of a half hour is awful discouraging.

anyways, thats my rant...im done with online poker untill i win enough in my home games to deposit again Razz

It seems to me that a majr difference between a profitable player and one who is not is the ability to lay down a big losing hand.

You can play great poker and take small steps to build a bank roll but the BIG steps backwards seem to be the difference for a lot of people...

Thoughts?

Just to add some balance: I took some horrible beats the other day on MTT's see my "Retard" post in "Tales of Poker". Since that night, I have raped and pillaged the SNG for 4 ITM finishes and up 200 profit and up 400 in total bringing my deposit back into the black.

This is something nearly everone that only has the $10 free from XYZ Poker room goes through. Of course $10 isn't going to run up to become a $5k bank roll unless your one hell of a player, and if your that good your not playing iwth $10 in free money.

People read a few poker websites and think they can beat the game because they know what pot odds are. Then they come here looking for sympathy because they busted out their first $50 deposit.

Sorry if I sound a bit harsh, but your not the only one it happened to and you won't be the last. If you don't believe me, read through my first 100 posts here. They were ME bitching and crying about taking "tough" beats and going broke.

I've snice learned that 99% of why I went broke the first few times was due to not having enough bankroll to cover a few tough beats. Not to mention what I thought were bad beats, but were simply me misplaying hands because I thought I knew alot more than I did.

Putting $50 at a time 6 times in XYZ poker room isn't the same as saving up and making 1 nice $300 deposit and playing .5/1 limit holdem, or $25 NL and STAYING within your bankroll.

Winning Holdem isn't about making big plays and getting big wins. Its about protecting your money and punishing those who don't protect theirs.

Please post some more detail about how you busted out and we can look at helping.
what game/limits you were playing.
Hand histories would work best if you can get them.

I agree with mike..

Take $300 to either Paradise (my fav), Party, or any of the larger poker rooms, .. play $10 sngs and $25 NL tables, or limit if thats your thing... slowly work your way up.. eventually start integrating $50 nl tables, etc..

You have to be able to cover the swings, .. I started off with this exact scenario.. now I play $200 NL tables, and I'll tell you, its not difficult to have a $1200 day of bad beats.. you have to have the bankroll to cover this action. If you do, and you are a good player, you will be positive throughout your poker career.. Just always be playing slightly below your bankroll parameters..

At least thats my theory

yeah, i see what you guys are saying, and you're probably right that i misplayed a few hands...but i guess after weeks and weeks of playing people that will call you to the river with middle pair its very very hard to lay down a big hand like that. I really wish i jotted down the hand #'s so i could look thru them Razz ah well, i guess its time to learn as much as i can and wait till i can start with a more substancial bankroll before i play online again.

I agree that bankroll can make a difference for some people. I have a higher comfort level when I know that I don't have to worry about making another deposit just because of some bad beats. Also, it is key to pace yourself. This goes for more than just poker. For example, when I am on Vegas trips I set some worse case scenario levels for each day(whether it is poker, blackjack, sports betting or whatever). If I lose more than the quota for a given day then I immediately stop playing until the next morning. It helps limit the tilt factor.

That statement really hits home with me right now. I'm coming to the sad conclusion that I'm simply not as good of a poker player as I once thought. My ring game troubles have continued way beyond the point of "running bad", and I'm at least smart enough to recognize a bad play after the fact.

I'm up overall online for one simple reason - I'm a decent SnG player because I know how to abuse weak/tight players in that format. I'm good enough at being selectively aggressive in that format that it compensates for the holes in my game. If I had only played ring games, I'd be way down.

This has already been said by others, but the best advice for someone struggling is probably:

1. Play at a stake level your bankroll can handle. Your bankroll should start out at least 10x the buy in for SnG/ring games.

2. Highly consider playing SnGs. You are punished much less for a loose call or two in this format. It's easy to undo 1-2 hours of good poker at a ring table with 1-2 key mistakes. SnGs limit the damage you can do with a loose call/mistake, which in turn limits tilt.

or to minimize your losses, go by annie duke and Howard Lederer's advice....the 30 big bet rule.

if you lose more than 30x the big bet, don't play for a day or 2.
