So this whole poker on the net thing has inspired me to really take a run at becoming a pro - hating the corporate grind lately. Been playing SnGs at PP and have noticed the same thing that many others have posted - with the huge blinds at the end it becomes an all in fest pretty quick. I've played about 40 SnGs total, half 5/1 (when I started) other half 10/1. I'm about 40 bucks to the good overall, a little more than that if I look just at the 10/1s.
Given all that, should I move to Poker Stars or some other site where the blinds aren't as high and (from what I've read) the play is a little better? I'm not all that interested in making $$ right now, just want to keep learning and see if I have what it takes. I'm concerned the all in fest at the ends of PPs aren't really helping me figure out whether I can really do this or not. If not, I'll go back to trying to write the Great American novel!
All thoughts/comments appreciated. |

for SnG's and tournies I'll take Stars any day.
for ring game fishing I'd rather be at Party Poker.
thats my opinion.
BTW the action at Poker Stars is tougher than Party Poker. |

I used to think that SnGs was a crap shoot but it isnt. Skillful play will get you in the money frequently. I estimate with good play on any given SnG you could place in the top-3 50% of the time (on average). The reason you cant place all the time or even 75% of the time is b/c of the crap shoot odds. Of course, if the opps on the SnGs are great players, youll be lucky to break even. I probably played over 1500+ SnGs over the last few years and havent seen any noticable improvement in the play. I am guessing b/c theres going to always be a steady stream of easy money at the tables I play ($30 SnG and lower). If folks were sigificantly better, they would move up to higher stake games/tournies.
I did notice Paradise is by far the best to play for SnGs. I havent played on Poker Stars but I heard the SnG conditions are good there too. I avoid (like the plague), SnGs on Party Poker, Party Poker clones, and Poker Room. Although I can make money over there its more of a crap shoot and less skill since the blinds tend to promote aggression faster (all-in or bust) in the tourney |

Dude, you have to switch to Poker Stars then. Higher starting stacks (nearly twice PP), slower blind increases, and much much better, tighter players. |

At Poker Stars more agressive players can do well with the fast blinds. Rocks like me need more time. |

| Well, early returns are good, played 2 10/1 tonight, one 6th and one 1st. Played heads up for a long time in the second one, what a difference from PP. My only complaint is not having the bet amount on the chip stacks... love the stats and the notes functions. |

| I find that at Party Poker SnGs you are at the mercy of the dealer. If you catch some nice cards, you are laughing. If you don't, you just can't seem to bully those stupid fish around. Poker Stars, on the other hand, seems to be weak/tight central. I've won some tourneys there without hardly ever showing a hand. If you are aggressive, you probably will prefer the Poker Stars player base. They respect raises much more. If you like to camp out for decent hands and then value bet people to death, Party Poker is more your style. Paradise seemed to be somewhere in the middle....blinds start small and go up slowly, giving a skilled player time to work. I liked Paradise SnGs a lot, and the turbo SnGs at Poker Stars are treating me well so far. I'm in the midst of a 50x $15 turbo trial at PS that's almost finished. |

Exactly. Well said.
And if you want to improve your game by playing against a high level of competition, the bigger buyin ($30+) SNGs and MTTs on Poker Stars are very good. There's still some weak tight players, and a few maniacs, but a lot of tight, aggressive, very skilled players too. |
