Just reading through some posts where people have posted questions asking what specific things mean and I remember back to when I was a noob on these forums and sat round wondering WTF certain phrases meant, so I thought it might be useful to supplement some of the glossary/definitions posts with one of my own. People can feel free to comment, add, chastise .....
#/# *
*where # appear to be random nos
Villian's PokerTracker Stats. Posts often start, or include information like ... "villian was a 25/12" .... which indicates the % of times he voluntarily puts money in the pot then / the % of times he raises pre-flop.
<3 = love!
its basically a heart on it’s side!
3-Bet = to make the 2nd raise in limit poker
e.g. UTG+1 calls, MP1 raises, HERO 3-bets
3xBB / 4xBB = 3 /4 times the big blind
to raise before the flop.
e.g. the blinds are 50/100; a 3xBB raise would be 300.
7CS = 7 card stud
Aces up = Two pair, one of which is Aces
Hold A7, board is A74, you have Aces up.
Thanks to drmcboy!
AI = All in
That moment when your chips are in the middle and your fate is resting with the poker gods
AXs / Axs = Ace + any other card, both of the same suit
BB/SB = Big blind/Small Blind
Note: in limit, BB = big bet
e.g. Blinds are 50/100, I am sat in the SB, and UTG raises 3xBB
(= I am sitting in the small blind, Under-the-gun raises to 300 (3 times the current big blind))
bomb, or To bomb a street
Betting a particular street hard. e.g. From pot to push.
thanks to Warpe for this one
the Bubble = the period just before the paid places begin
e.g. the last 4 in a SnG
to Bubble = To go out of a tournament just before the paid places
BR = Bank Roll
The amount of cash you have available to pursue your poker dreams!
C-Bet, c-bet, Cont Bet, CBet, cBet = Continuation bet
To make a follow-up bet on a flop after you have raised pre-flop.
Capping = to make the final raise in a round of betting at limit poker
e.g. UTG+1 calls, MP1 raises, HERO 3-bets, CO Caps
CO = the Cut-Off
The person sitting to the immediate right of the dealer/button
Donk / donk bet = donkey / donkey bet
To do something stupid / to make a stupid bet, usually when it is obvious you are beat
DUCY, DICY, AND UCY = do you see why? do I see why? you see why?
Thanks Warpe!
EP = Early Postion
EV = Expected Value
The long term effect of making certain decisions. Can be either negative (-ve) or positive (+ve)
e.g. constantly calling raises w/ 93o is –ve EV (as in, u keep doing it, u are going to lose money in the long run)
FE / Fold Equity = The value you get from the times your opponent(s) folds
Fold Equity = (% of the time your opponent folds) * (the amount of money you win when he folds i.e. the pot size)
thanks to Arkana for this
Float = Calling a bet in order to take a pot down later
kind of like a bluff slowplay or a bluff call.
e.g. you call suspected continuation bets on the flop in the hopes that the bettor will give up his unimproved AK and check on the turn. You then bet and hopefully take the pot away from the preflop aggressor. We are floating over the other guys flop bet looking for an opportunity to take the pot.
Thanks to Lukie and IrishEyes for this
FO = Freezeout
A tournament where, once you have lost all your chips, you’re out!
FT = Final Table
ahhh .... the promised land
FYP = Fixed your post
FWIW = For what it's worth
Gap Concept
See ToP for this one. But, essentially, the Gap Concept dictates that you need a stronger hand to call a raise with than you do to open the raising yourself. The difference between the strengths is called the “gap”.
H/Hr = hands per hour played (average) at a table
HEFAP = Hold Em for Advanced Players by David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth
HH = Hand History
The transcript of a specific hand or complete tournament, usually obtained from the specific site
HOH (2) = Harrington on Holdem (2) by Dan Harrington
HU = Heads-Up
HUD = Heads-Up Display
see PAHUD
ICM = Independent Chip Model
Works out your stack as a % of the prize pool and works out the EV of decisions based thereon. Very difficult to summarise in one sentence, so read here for more
or search for ICM using Forum Search
IM(H)O = In my (humble) opinion
ITM = In the Money
Landing the paid places in a tournament
LAGG / LAgg / LAG = Loose aggressive
leak = a hole or shortcoming in your game
Usually a fairly small mistake, but one in which you are ‘leaking’ chips – most notable is completing from the SB (largely because of the discount price) with moderate to poor holdings looking miracle flops
LHE = Limit Hold ‘em
line-check = line check
you post a hand you played and then ask people to comment on how you bet on each street.
LP = Late Position
M
From Harrington on Hold ‘Em; your M represents your stack relative to the size of the blinds and antes.
e.g. you have a 1500 stack and the blinds are 100/200 – your M is 1500/(200+100) = 5
or, there are 8 players left in a tournament and the blinds are 100/200 w/ a 25 ante. Your 1500 stack is now 1500/(200+100+25*8)=3
meh = a sign of indifference
Metagame
a game within a game. Usually based on the characteristics of the players involved.
MHIG = My Hand is Good
MP = Middle Position
MTT = Multi-Table Tournament
Nit
a gambler who is afraid to gamble
thanks to Renton for this
NLHE = No Limit Hold ‘em
The game we all love and hate at the same time
OESD = Open ended straight draw
e.g. you hold 78 and board has 6 9 2
OESFD = Open ended straight-flush draw
e.g. you hold 7h8h and the board has 6h 9h 2c
OOP = Out of Position
Open limp
being the first person in the pot preflop, but not raising.
thanks to Renton for this
OTM = Out of the Money
the opposite of ITM!
PAHUD = Poker Ace Heads Up Display
A program that uses the information in your PokerTracker database to provide relevant, customised stats on your opponents and displays them as an overlap to the table you are playing on, such as how often they enter a pot, how often they raise etc
PFR = Pre-Flop Raise
To raise before the flop
e.g. I fired out a 3xBB PFR
or Who the f**k calls a 5xBB PFR with 74 off suit?
PP = pocket pair or PartyPoker.com
e.g. I was dealt a small pp = I was dealt a small pocket pair
WHEREAS, I was playing on PP = I was playing on Party Poker
PS = PokerStars.com
PSB = Pot-sized bet
to make a bet equivalent to the size of the current pot!
PT = Poker Tracker
Push / to push = to move all–in
Literally; push all of your chips into the middle
pwn/pwned = own/owned
When someone outplays or otherwise outclasses someone else
e.g. Gauntlet Game 4 - the action is folded round to Xianti in the SB. Xianti calls, Staresy checks his KTo. The flop comes T hi, Xianti bets the minimum, Staresy thinks it’s a steal bet and moves All-in, Xianti calls in an instant and flips AA.
Xianti pwned Staresy
Type in “pwn” in the search facility for other examples!
QFT = Quoted for truth
R&A = Rebuys & Add-ons
A tournament which allows you to re-buy (usually restricted to the first hour) if you lose all your chips or drop below your starting stack
R&S = Rebuys & Strap-ons
Similar to the above, but where you didn’t realise it was a re-buy when you bought in
ROI = Return on Investment
The net profit you made divided by the money you invested to make that profit (the sum of all your buy ins).
e.g. if you played 10 $10+1 sngs and won $150, then you risked 10x11=$110 and your net profit was $40. So your ROI will be 40/110 = 36%
thanks to Arkana for this one
SNG / SnG / S’n’G / STT = Sit ‘n’ Go / Single Table Tournament
A single table tournament
SNGPT = Sit 'n' Go Power Tools
A Program that allows you to work out EV in situations of a SnG.
STBY = Sucks to be you.
Often said when people post bad beats
STFU = Shut The F*** Up
not an expression usually found in FTR posts (we're too nice to each other to use terms like this), but certainly one you might come across in the chat box of your favourite poker site
Stop ‘n’ Go
a move whereby you call a raise, but you are first to act on the flop and you push all-in regardless. Usually where you will probably get called by a better hand if you push pre-flop or you are going to get called anyway, but you may get that better hand to fold if they miss the flop or may have just enough money to make a better hand fold.

UTG+1 = Under-the-Gun plus one
The person sitting to the immediate left of UTG

I just came here hoping to find out what "The villain was xx/x/x" means - I read that in every other thread here. For example:
"He was 8/3/2 so I folded QQ to his 3-bet" |

can we add acronym Renton hates because I see it everywhere and still dont know what it means... am about to search the forum for a definition now but it'd be handy if it was in here =)
Edit: oh I found it: http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/forum/testing-acronyms-t69859.html
and from the comment in that thread (edit - I typed friend, instead of thread, freudian slip?... hmm really must get out more..)
I don't think it's going to be entered into the list anytime soon - lol! {acronym Renton hates} |
