I'll be heading to Turning Stone in NY. I'm planning on just taking $100 (all im really willing to lose if thats the case) and playing either 2/4 or the 100max NL table.
Can anyone give me some advice on what to expect as far as what to do when i get there (signing up for a table, tipping the dealer, switching tables etc..) Id rather worry about my game than all the etiquette types of things. Also, what can i expect as far as competition goes at these tables? (my limit and NL games are about equal, so thats not really an issue) I've heard some say that online games play tighter/harder than the cheap games at a casino...but ive also hear the opposite.
Anyways, i know i kinda rambled on here, but thanks for any help to putting my nerves to rest |

Play the NL max100. You'll thank me later. I've seen 83o capped preflop in a 2/4 game at the TS. It's just better to play the NL if you don't have a preference, in my opinion.
When you get there, you'll want to walk all the way to the back where the poker room is. Give the lady your initials and what stakes you want to play, and while you're waiting for a spot to open up, buy your chips. Playing 1/2 NL you will have to give a 3$ rake if the pot goes about 15 I believe. I usually tip the deal the 1st time I win, about a dollar. There's a lot of rich young kids there that aren't very good. I've seen someone call 70$ post flop on a flush draw. He left the table soon after that. |

Bring $400 and play at least 3/6 limit. It's a turkey shoot. Bring a smile and a tolerance for bad beats. Also tend to give a post-flop raiser more credit than you would online unless you have a read.
At 4/8 I tip:
Nothing for a small pot
$1 for a moderate pot
$2 for a monster
Throw in an extra buck or two if they're helpful getting you up to speed on table protocol or deal with a difficult situation.
Sometimes I'll give a really good/fast dealer a $1 at the end of their shift at the table and tell them I appreciate the fast play.
I tipped the lady that helped me my first time at the table $4 on the first pot I won.
When I won a $200 quad mini-jackpot I tipped the guy $5. |

I work tipping a little differently.
I play 3/6 at the casino. I usually tip $1 for most pots. If it gets particularly big (3+ people calling raises up to the turn) I will throw $2ish.
But I get snooty about my tips. I sat at a table where I witnessed 2 people raising to the river and fliped over a split pot. 1 person tipped the dealer and the other did not. I realized that he didn't have to, he only won what he put into the pot minus a rake. So he already lost a couple dollars on the pot. Why should he tip? But I saw the dealer give this guy the evil eye. I was put off by that, and I didn't realy want to give this dealer any tip. Well, they changed dealers before I won my next pot, so it never came up.
Another time I saw dealer after dealer say, "Thank you" at each tip. But when the dealer sat down and just took tips without even acknowledging the tipper. I didn't really want to give him a tip. I did win a pot, and I did tip him. I can't be that un-kind. But is a thanks too much to ask for? |

are you serious?? I actually played some play money games online yesterday for fun and play wasnt THAT bad... I'm still trying to figure out if that works to my advantage or not though. My only fear with the NL table is with people constantly pushing all-in with similar junk hands. |

They're just as likely to push post flop with junk when you can accurately gauge how well you've got that hand locked up.

it'll make great hands all that much more fun....but it sounds like mediocre hands (tptk) are going to be hard to play |

$100 is not enough, even for $2/$4. you are going to want to bring $200 and be prepared to lose all of it. in the short run, it is just too easy for the loose passive calling stations to suck out bizarre straights and flushes on your TPTK or trips, losing you tons of chips. you've got to be prepared for this. i cannot emphasize it enough. it has happened to me every single time i have played $3/$6 in a B&M casino. read my discussion in the "casino arizona" thread for a recent example. you have to be willing to blow out a whole rack and rebuy knowing that eventually the odds are going to even out for you and your skill will get a chance to shine. but it can take literally 8 hours or more before you starting hitting hands that hold up. it's not like online where they deal 60 hands per hour. your patience will be pushed to the limits. you must be prepared for this. no book or website can communicate this properly, you must experience it to believe it. i have experienced it many times and yet i am still shocked every time i go into a B&M casino. discipline is the #1 weapon you need. if you don't have it, don't play. i'm serious.
