Time for me to announce my new operation. I'm in the same boat as Wonderland, at the end of April my bankroll was $250 on stars and FPP's were 297. My first deposit Bonus expires on 9th June so I need 210 (already had a few fpp's from before I deposited) in the next 6 weeks. I had been playing 5NL and had got to the stage where I was beating 5NL and thinking anout moving up to 10NL but wasn't sure when exactly I should make the leap.

The 50$ Bonus is an incentive to get the FPP's and at 5NL I was getting ~10 per night and adding in the fact that I won't be playing much for probably 10 days in the next 6 weeks it was going to get tight. Stars also announced there silver star promotion for UK players so I only need 250 fpps in May to achieve it.......... SO...... it's time to make the leap and 10NL here I come.

I started with ~$250 and have set myself a $190 floor on the bankroll before I have to move back down to 5NL. I started off with one table of 10NL open , so that I could concentrate , get used to the new level and try to develop reads on what the plays at this level actually meant.
I normally play quite a LAGgy game and run 33/22 ish at 6max, BUT having read Robb's advice to tighten up whilst initially moving up thats what I did. 113 hand in I was playing 13/9 and had lost $30. WHAT?????? Jeez I was punch drunk . I got stacked with a full house , a set and the first one was with top pair no kicker( ok i was stupid with that one) but what made it worse was that most of the money went to the 75/4 fish I had position on who was bleeding money to everyone else but when I hit my monsters , he had better ones. Feeling bad I shut the 10 NL table down for the night and played 5NL and managed to bleed a bit more before recovering and getting a 2$ profit on the 5NL play to leave the bankroll on $222.

I was thinking about it all day yesterday , and wondering whether I should be dropping down to 5NL and grind it back up to $250 again before trying again. In the end set vs set and boat vs boat were just coolers , top pair NK vs slow played flopped double gutshot straight was a hand I should have been playing for a small pot , not a stack and the raise all in on the river should have got me out of the hand cheaper . Oh well ,$10 now to learn the modest changes in other peoples play was a price worth paying. ( I hope I only have to pay it once though). The other main differences I found were :-
min raises - WTF .....they seem to be everywhere ...oh well seems as though they are the nuts and sign to be cautious at 10NL ...at 5NL they just seemed to be crappy players who weren't too sure how good their hand was.
3betting - THere seems to be an abundance of 3 betting PF usually resulting in a fold....5nl it was just a 3bet,4bet, 5bet all in war.....I think I'm going to have to experiment with my AA,KK,QQ,AK type hands to see what the best way to get value is.Its also made me wonder whether I should be looking to 3bet lighter with hands like AJ,AT, KQs, QJs as a steal in position since people seem to be folding a lot more to the 3bet. Depending on how it goes it might mean that the odd suited connectors may also fall into this camp.

OK , so you may have noticed this is a day late but it took til getting home last night to decided that the move down level of $190 was there for a reason, ,it allowed for mistakes while I get used to this new level and some variance. Therefore it was time to start again and keep a close eye on how close I was to the $190 if I did lose some stacks but that I should continue with 10NL . Combined with the fact that I didn't want to start an Op and have to abandon it inside of 2 days means that I'm posting this today. Last nights play will follow in the next post.

so, now I'm home for lunch I can post the graph from last night. Obviously from the first post I didn't crash out and burn .......in fact it was the complete opposite with a 6BI heater.

bankroll stands at $282.43 Fpp's 346 ......so 49FPP's this month out of the required 250 ...erm ...looks a cert lol

1082 hands now at 10NL in the last 2 days. I started out last night playing 1 table .....managed to get 2 stacks with KK vs AK which put me in a more relaxed frame of mind , so I started to add more tables until I finished with 3 tables for most of the session and logging nearly 900 hands last night. My play reverted more to my 5NL style , slightly less laggy generally but still LAGgy , and the fish kept swimming in .

I'm happier now . friday night was disheartening , but last night has made me realise that I can beat 10NL, I just have to concentrate , learn and find the fish.
edit: how do you get holdem manager hands to work with the hand converter , I keep getting errors when I try.

A brutal nights poker again . Bankroll back down to $256.23 and 372 FPP (175 to go).
got stacked twice but it was mainly a case of hands not holding up/draws not hitting or not getting paid off when they did.

What made you 4bet QQ in that first hand? I would normally flat there vs. most villains and play somewhat cautiously postflop.

He'd been 3betting me a lot, 1st hand was actually after the second one chronologically and I talked myself into thinking he was 3betting light . It does seem to be a recurring theme from last night and the first night that I'm playing my overpairs too aggressively. Although I did stove the second hand ,after i stopped fdor the night and I think I was 53:46 favourite when the money went in.
In hindsight , 2 of the tables I was on I should have stood up and left. This one because Aivla was 3betting me so often , and another one where Baal Je was on my right, but he was open raising virtually every once he was MP or later. He'd bluff lead with air for two streets then give up on the river. It didn't feel nicewith him doing it regularly. On the other table he was hardly doing a thing and he was running stats 26 24 but most of the time it was on the one table.

That QQ is just a cooler, needs strong reads to flat oop. Your sizing sucks tho, repopping that 15BB to 30BB gives him more room to make a mistake and encourage bad calls or induce something spazzy. As played I think c/c frop is good.

JJ Id prob flat flop and b/f a lot of turncards.

tonights session was 250 hands 2 tables NR now 252.08 and fpps 275. Hit diddly squat again and Aivla appeared on one of my tables again playing the same way. Heres his stats

Am I reading them right in that hes 3betting with virtually all his raising range?

this hand tonight was while I was heads up after starting a table with no reads

in this hand pumpoen was 54/8/0.7 over 26 hands and had seen him bluff with air.I didnt think he had the K on the flop and was most likely on a flush draw or Ax or pocket pair.Talked myself into continuing when the flush draw and flush came , and river was called just in case he had the K or 2 rather than raising it. I was hoping that he'd got the Ax or PP hands .

should I have shoved on the flop with roughly 15(?) outs and 2 cards to come. It was only because it was against the agro monkey I thought i could let him bet and call until the outs hit.

AJ - I dont get it. With stack sizes this is awful. U see how 3balling to whatever size makes u feel commited on any board, rather shovel or flat pre. Dont blame him for calling a min3bet in position, think what 3balling has accomplished.

JT - I usually tone down on my cold calls, when theres someone squeeze happy left to act and Im not otb. As played your line is fine given reads and his sizing

AQ - Depends on how likely you are to outplay him on later streets. We can float the minraise vs nittags who will take one stab and then give up, vs this guy we´ll end up playing the guessing game. If you´re going to float him donk this turn, to get value from FDs and fold out 33-66

QJ - Def try to get it in, gotta raise/4ball tho, just shoveling kills our action with stack-/pot size

back to the QJ: a 4x raise seems too big, 0.8 seems fine as it gives him more room to 3ball

QQ - fine

KQ - weird line by the villian, sweet line on your part.

AA - This is fine as long as people 3b bluff rarely and call off a 4bet shove with enough weak hands. In general this will fold out a lot of his range tho and more importantly takes away his FE (from his pov) to 5bet shovel himself.

77 - This is okay. There will come a time, where u cant play it that hard on a flop this dry, where u cant rep a load, as long people stack off on TPGK+ its a cool line to take.

KK - I like, Im experimenting with smaller bets on dry boards as well. If you get caught doing this with strong hands, you can bluff here with smaller bets as well.

its been a busy couple of days , so I haven't got many hands in . Played some on thursday night and was pretty card dead and ended up at $271.23 and added the grand total of 1fpp.

Was late home on friday and since its been 4.30am starts this weekend watched a 10nl video from TAGpoker.co.uk before heading off to bed.

Managed to get a shortish session in last night even though I was tired. Actually had position on A 98/84 over his first 30 hands or so and a 84/0 sat next to him.
Bankroll now at $284.18 and 423 fpps (halfway to silver star).Bit annoying that I was working so that I couldn't take part in the Full Tilt freeroll after the last two turned into rubbish ones ,this was actually a case of playing against a lot of familiar names.

Played about 500 hands last night on 10NL for a net $2.90 gain so that atthe end of cash game my BR was $274.43. Played in the FTR200 as well , bit of a chat with M2M at the table and surprised myself playing 13/12 ( I'm not a nit honestly) and M2M was on 38/33 bit of a role reversal. Managed to take down 4th place for $20. When I checked my cashier at the end of the night my fpps are 505 and an email had arrived from the cashier

Well last night was one hell of a rollercoaster. Cashier dipped down to $330 climbed to 390 ishbefore settling at $357.43 at close of play. 550 fpps 253 this month , so with the UK offer I've cleared silver star for next month. Bit of a bummer really as those cash bonuses for the fpps are only for silver star players in may , so I'm hoping they will still be about ready for next month.

I'm still spewing money with good hands, but I was trying to concentrate last night on big pot big hand and small hand small pot.
I was also bet folding a lot more , whereas in the past it would have been bet/call or check call and would have spewed off more money.Had a $30 win stacking two people, and lost a $30 pot .The second was annoying as flopped a set , villain bet , I 3x raised and he shoved all in with his flush draw. when the money went in I was 74:26 equity wise and he rivered his flush.

HEM trial ran out overnight as well ,So I am stumping up the cash for it today. I think that HEM is a lot more advanced in the stats side of things , but PT3 had some features that I liked. Hopefully once I get the license code I can post some of the hands from last night.
One thing I noticed is that I tried to get the last weeks hand history emailed from stars and it only sent the last 200 hands. Which is piss poor as I played about 1400 hands last night. I consciously tried to tighten up a bit last night as well and generally was playing 24/18 ish .

My next major decision is going to be where to move my roll to and when.I havew about $150 on WH which when i move it from sports side to poker side will be entitled to 100% first depositors Bonus. Seems like I have to clear all of the points before it gets paid over though. Timeless Poker is looking like an option whilst i still have a relatively small roll , 40% Rakeback and 100% on $100 firts deposit Bonus.

Just read through your OP... congrats on the Bonus and BR build. I am in the same boat now. BR keeps swinging between 275-330 and am at 377.5 fpps so end of the month is my goal for Bonus. Nice to see it done and done so fast from your original start date.

well the swings are continuing , saturday night , I couldn't win hardly anything , was all in twice with the nuts and tied the pot and was sucked out on sooo many times. Luckily didnt get stacked but had to fold once the board turned horrible on the river and villains kept shoving. At the end of the night I was down to $331.43 and FPPs were 568.

Tonight was a totally different beast, lost some hands early (as iusual) but then hit a roll and cards were kind to me as well. 480 hands in 2 1/2 hours for a 24.50 profit. Bankroll is 355.93 and fpps are 586.

684 hands for a loss of $11.10 to leave bankroll on $344.83 and 606 fpps. Frustrating night really, was up $20 at one stage and then just kept running into sets to put me down nearly 2BI at one stage and i finished the session off with a 1/2 buyin stacking with an overpair (99) to recover slightly.

wednesday night i was watching "wonderland" play for an hour or so in a sweat session.Interesting to see where he was folding and I'd have been raising.
Another Interesting thing was seeing the fpp balance that he had made this month compared to me since he plays with 6$ (?) buyin and I'm buying in for the full $10.Where I have blasted through the UK's silver star promotion this month Andy's still got a way to go .....and he wasn't even aware of it. This might also be a style issue with me probably being a more aggressive and building a pot leading to my very swingy graph.
Played a short session after the sweat and finished up $3 ish and last night couldn't hit a draw. managed to recover at the end of the session to a BR of 346.23 and 643 fpps

Hey KEEF, how are them cows?

aye, i been losing so bad lately that i aint doing full stack cozi it will be just more to lose rather than more to win.

I lost the munniez you saw me make in two hands the following session.

Anywho... in summary... fold more. I've been saying this a lot lately but it's a way overlooked concept in our stake. For some reason i'm still able to piss stacks away when i'm in good but soon that poker aids will heal up and i'll get back into realistic spots where i'm not flipping 9 tails and one heads out of ten flips *rolls eyes*.

Anyway... love to fold. Someone once said that poker is a game in which you can make money by folding. That always stuck in my head. Your button range is wide, and i tried that thinking: well, i'm in position wtf?! but we shouldn't take it for granted that just because they're in the blinds they have a) weaker hands and b) will just check fold.

Or let's say you do open up. The whole cbet thing is interesting. Very often fish will check-call so don't expect to take it down with air. I very often get called two out of three streets with bot pair when i've hit air. So i thought, you know what, fuck all that kind of play. I just want some low variance, tight, semi-predictable play.

So go ahead and polarize your ranges, they won't catch on. I'm talking leave medium suited connectors in late position, weak kings and weak aces on the button. What are you gonna do, bet your A8 when an A hits? these people are flatting with AA preflop.

Anywho, that's my two cents. I'm hardly winning but i never wanted those swings you're getting and have deliberately created a style that is working to avoid that. Still swingy but not nearly as much.

Lemme know what you think and if you try it out Smile

i havnt played 6max for so long, and even when I used to play it I was only at 10NL, but 29/18 seems pretty horrid imo. tighten up for a start, and then stop limping/calling so much pre.

obviously my main reason for concern is the button results. I think I'm opening far too wide a range and its getting me into spew I was discussing this with Andy the other night. Some ofthe other results were slightly surprising. I have said about overvaluing overpairs when in reality they are a nice earner.
Any comments will be greatly appreciated to help me sort out the crap that I've been doing.

ok, at micro-6-max you want to be running 10ptBB/100. Which would be 20 buyins. So obviously there are some leaks to find.
Post the general (default) report "by stakes" from HEM. Make sure it includes 3-bet, fold to 3-bet, c-bet, fold to c-bet.

Graph - it's swingy as hell. But small-ish sample size. You probably need to both fold (you lose a bunch of biggish pots) and bet (non-showdown line) more post-flop.

Position stats
A comment. It's better to start out as a nit and slowly expand your range to become a respectable LAG. As an example, Robb is still a crazy-nit 16-12 type and winning at stakes up to 100nl. You can crush micros by tight pre-flop play. I'm trying to learn a 23-21 style at micro-6-max, but that's cos I am not using that to build my roll and I have other motives re my main games that wouldn't really apply if i was starting out. I think pre-flop play is likely your biggest leak, to run as loose=passive as you pre-flop and still turn a profit is testament to your post-flop play not sucking arse and probably being pretty good for the stakes you play. Big post-flop leak seems to be showing down too often, but this may simply indicate good small-pot zero post-flop pot contribution with weak hands. But you may be able to win these pots with c=bets? dunno.

sb = 44% vpip from sb is spew. Even in limped pots you should be folding T7o cos how are you going to make money from that out of position? you aren't. I also think you're stealing too much when folded to.
bb = Stop cold calling a weak range out of position. PFR and 3-bet are both good. Just abandon the crap.
EP = too loose. Try pocket pairs, AJs+, KQs only for a while. Raising all of them. I think that's about 9%. So what else is in your ep range? inappropriate stuff, that's what.
Middle = better, but still a little too loose.
Cut-off = I like this. Maybe cold-call a little less.
Button = wow, that's too loose. Cold-call heaps less, narrow your steal range to maybe 35%. I note that any ace, any king, any pair, broadways, + ANY SUITED matches closely your steal range. Equals asking for trouble. 3-bet looks good.

Ok, that's a lot of hands.
It does show me that you're cold-calling crap like ATo though. And stealing with J2o. And not pot-controlling when you should (KT hand). And three streets of calling down with K-high turning into king kick on quads??? K9 as tp isn't a hand to raise-call flop, call turn, call river with.
actually, your flop-play may need some work after all.

I can't provide much input on the hand grouping and river made hand value windows - they tell a lot less than people think.

player analysis
what do you think that very low fold to river c-bet is telling you? Filter on "called river bet/raise" and feel mortified.

you'll be at 25nl soon enough. Best to sort your game out sooner rather than later!!!

I initially started out following Robs first 5000 hand guide at 5NL as I wasn't rolled for 10NL and was switching from freerolls to cash games.I found that I just wasn't playing any hands at 5NL as it was always being raisedand reraised and I loosened up (too far I know ) and the style got me through 5NL. It runs into major problems at 10NL though. Generally I'm ok against the regular types but the fish either kill me or i clean up with them ....hence the swingy graph. Cbettng des take down an awul lot of pots but they tend to be smaller pots , when it doesnt I seem to get into bloated pots that go to showdown , and if I've hit I seem to be getting a fair amount of money into the pot. Then getting sucked out on by spurious cards that the regs wouldnt be playing in the first place.

If its folded to me CO and later i've been raising any two cardsand folding the crap to a reraise. 5NL the reraises were infrewuent , 10NL they are all over the place.Essentially I've got to tigthen up earlier and almost use same range in CO on the button.

Essentially that I turn into a bit of a station by the river. Basically by the time it gets thatere I'm usually feeling happy with my hand and willing to stack off with it .......unfortunately thats what i do too often. Can't find how to do the filter you suggest , only just bought HEM and still finding my way round it. With the averages that it quotes , are they the averages in my database or are they standard averages observed across millions of datamined hands?.
And thanks for the help and suggestions.

I suggest fold to 3bets more. Calling a 3bet 50% of the time is just pure spew. My own fold to 3bet stat is 70% for 10nl (I play FR tho :/). But still, you need to start 4betting or folding to those. Calling just sucks, especially if you are OOP. You give away all initiative. You are pretty much forced to check/fold when you miss, and thats just teh gay lol.

Good luck with your grind. I'll be posting my first 10k myself soon and I think we both have similar leaks (but good potential) in our game. I'll definitely keep an eye on your thread. Good luck!

bit of a quick update to say that there is no update . Been working long days and been virtually a case of getting home and off to bed before 6am (or earlier) start the next day.
This isn't to say that I'm not thinking about my game though, I'm thinking about swapping back to a trying a combination of Robbs first 100 hands again and Rentons preflop guide.I've also got to be a lot more decisive about when to leave a bad table. I've blown too much money having a station /maniac on my left. If I havent got some nitty players on my left I end up playing far too many pots OOP, blind stealing becomes like russian roulette.
The other thing i'm debating in my head is whether using this much tighter starting strategy I would be better to switch to full ring as well , since so many guys seem to do well at it or to carry on with 6max.

five tables is plenty to play fold 'em @ 6max.

I play 4 and am playing like 18% of hands. It's reasonably paced. Sometimes pop open a 5th if i'm card dead.

just learn to love throwing away your hands when you have crap, sometimes that crap inclides TPTK. Today i raised with AA and got two callers while in pos. Flop was like 9TJ, it went check check and i bet full pot, got raised like 2.5x and folded. Two weeks ago i'd have probably been shoving.

You'll watch that graph AT LEAST flatten out.

time for an update. Hardly played any hands recently simply due to long hours at work that I mentioned at the start of this OP. Knew it was coming hence the concentration on putting hands in at the start of the month.
played 415 hands on sat 31st and ended down a buy in. Mainly due to lots of small pots that hit diddly squat.
Last night was a roller coaster car crash.was up 23$ after 250 hands and finished up down 18$. This left the bankroll at $315.63 and fpps at 693.5
Since I hit silverstar last month using the UK promotion the fpps are racking up 50% faster now , and the store now has instant cash credits available 16$ for 1000fpps and 8 $ for 500 fpps so the initial aim is to get that 16$ Bonus by the end of the month.
back to last nights though these were the big hands.

This hand the villain had gone all in every hand for his three hands and had already lost a buyin.

was thinking that he was probably on JJ+ ,AK and discounted AA KK and AKsince I and the board had so many blockers.Coupled with his high 3bet% which I thought meant he probably would have had a smaller pocket pair as he might have 4bet a premium PP.

hey dude!

well, glad you're back, sorry you're having a rough time though. Suckage.

ok, remember my fold motto? for the AK hand, betting into 2 players with such a large bet is gambling unless maybe you had a decent size PP such as at least 88 but TT, QQ, then AJ. I don't think i'm cbetting anything else here (infact i might even c/r 99, JJ, 77 here).

Don't get wed do those 3bet hands that miss. And infact, pre flop, it really sucks but if you 3bet AK against 3 people, you may well not get it headsup. It's like that whether i just call with the AK here coz of how loose people are going to be and how they're not folding. Sucks balls but if you did hit, you'd probably be way ahead anyway and would take them by surprise. That said, that prick should not have called at any point during the whole ordeal. Those hands piss me off, coz normally here he has to put QQ, KK, AA in your range.

AA hand. If i get AA and it's a 3bet pot and KK hits the board, i will be cbetting. But look, by the turn it's complete rainbow, and barely connecting at all, so you're not getting called by worse, so never shove here, he's only calling with a K which is always in a villain's range here somewhere. Infact, you HAVE to put a K in his calling range once you get to the turn. So i would pot control and get to showdown cheaply. These guys LOVE to call with any A K or Q.

Remember how these big all-in pots are rarely a fight over who has the best kicker in a top pair situation. They've usually hit 2 pair or a set. So when you get AA just realise that it is only a pair, if that board looks like it hit your opponent hard and he's betting like it hit him hard, be prepared to toss them away. Note: use one's own instincts here.

This advice is verging on the nit style but i swear you need it to survive 10nl. It's not 5 where they don't have it. Some exceptions as you've shown but like, you knew he was a spew tard and they are the exceptions.

Best of luck, let me sweat you once you get back into regular game.

thanks Andy, milking this weekend so only got a short session in last night, probably about 150 hands. But what a heater, Bankroll is now back up to $356.28 and 716 fpps. I'll post the hands tonight but it was same sort of situations as last night , just the AA 's held up.
Got into an interesting situation last night with AA , i think i was BB, UTG raised to $0.40 and there were 3or 4 callers. I 3bet it up to $2 and they all folded. Question is ....what should I have 3 bet? too small and would end up with too many callers and then pricing in even more callers and multiway less chance of the AA standing up , too big and they all fold , not sure if the 2$ ish on the table was the best option after all. Will dig the hand out tonight as well and stick it in the beginners circle for opinions.

I think that's not too bad. I mean think about it, you may get two callers taking your equity down, may lose a buy-in. As it stood you took down a reasonable pot pre flop and then moved on. No biggy.

It is funny though, i think about $1.40 is usually fine but if you sense that you're going to called by more than one caller, better just take it down there with the $2 and IF you get one idiot who calls, then you're in a nice bloated pot with AA.

each situation will be quite different. Lately most of my AA and KK have been folded to me, so that sucks in a different way. Quick tip though, you get AK and 3bet a total unknown and he calls. If you want to play tight, just chill out post flop until you know his game. Maybe even check it down if you miss. Thing is, in a 3bet pot, if you cbet good with air, it's not long before you're somewhat pot committed. Just cool off and wait for a better spot. Trust me, all these spots add up.

some nice good hands there, thankfully the fish are stacking off light. Always nice. I'm surprised these days how seldom that happens. In my sesh tonight, i stacked one person when i was miles behind, a half stack, then one full on full stack.... in 750 hands!

two things. One... don't be calling that flop with the missed AK, but i think you already know that. Although serves the poopyhead right for calling a 3bet with CRAP. Ouw there's nothing more satisfying. And two, Q3s from the button, after one limper? i might do this but i wouldn't want to tell my friends i did it. Tight tight tight.

Theres no way that I ever steal the blinds if they are there for the nicking .... honest .. Laughing

last night was 174 card dead hands for a profit of $1.75 giving a roll of $358.03 and 723.5 fpps. A total of 833 hands so far this month and the deliberate intention to tighten up is appearing ......maybe not enough though....overall running at 25/18.4 with 4% 3bet%. Last month was 29.1/18.1 2.8% 3bet% over 11635 hands.

i think it's like, the more advanced you are, the wider your range is allowed to be because you know how to play those hands. I guess the way i see it is you have to earn the right to play a wider range. Until then, i feel it should be below 20% for sure.

I'm running around 18/14 of late. I have to. But very recently have started to sneak in the odd 89s or 9Ts from early positions.

Learn to enjoy not being in pots. Enjoy folding. Drop the cards like they're on fire. Yeuch! 56o from the button against a 40vp and a 55vp. Bin it, they're calling with any A, K or Q.

Today i started playing... 20 hands in i'm down a fuckin buy-in, almost a THOUSAND hands later i claw my way up to break even through good plays. Felt rather proud of myself. Been 5 tabling lately too. Could do with a nice heater but of late my defensive game has been solid so am hardly losing. This is what it is to tighten up, get away from the crap so the boat doesn't sink! Then you can start paddling.
