I just started grinding FR cash games maybe 4 months ago after playing nothing but MTTs and SnGs initially. Someone told me they were more 'dynamic' and I'm inlined to agree.
I started with $50 at 25NL & got up to $150 before I heard anything about Bankroll Management. When I heard I needed $500 to play 25NL, I decided to be an poopyhead and keep playing 25NL until I was rolled for it. I got lucky, made it up to $500, then kept on going.
Here's my long-term plan. It's fairly aggressive (reckless) compared to what some of the BR nits recommend, but the money isn't really important to me in that I don't rely on it to pay the bills, and I've got no problem dropping back down when I have a bad streak...done it more than a few times.
25NL till $800, drop down at $700
50NL till $2200, drop down at $2000
100NL till $5000, drop down at $4500
200NL till $11000, drop down at $10000
...
...
...
Thread posted at $1700.
I'm sure I'm in for a harsh slap in the face at the higher stakes, but I can take it. I've been sucking up information like a sponge, learning tons, reading books, posting hands (thank you FR forum) and my game feels tighter than it ever has now.
Honestly, this little project has just been like playing a role playing game. Building enough experience points until I can 'level up' to where the monsters are tougher, but give you more XP. That's honestly my perspective on it.
No idea why I posted this....uhhh....wish me luck? ...or better yet, skill?

Sounds like we're in very similar situations, except I sort of need the money to pay the bills lol. The difference between poker and an RPG is you never know what you're going to get. I an RPG you play for an hour and get x amount of xp. In poker you can play good for an hour and get dicked
What site do you play on? if Stars we've probs run into each other.

Yeah, RPGs you don't often lose XP . Damn it sucks playing for hours and losing XP.
I'm on UB at the moment. Been Bonus whoring around to speed up my progress, though the UB Bonus is hardly very 'speedy'. Adds maybe .5PTBB to my winrate.
I plan to eventually return to stars, my original stomping grounds after I've sufficiently whored bonuses. Fuck I hate all poker software after stars. Especially the POS UB software. I miss the good ol' stars simple theme.

Would you say playing on UB & putting up with software that you dislike is worth the .5ptbb extra? I've never played on UB; I've only played Stars & Cake (which I disliked a lot & only played on briefly before returning to Stars). Imo I just can't get used to other sites' software. Anyways, gl on your operation Dozer. |

It actually works out to 1 ptbb -- my first estimation was a little pessimistic. And yeah it's worth it to me. I'm pretty good at getting used to new software (betpot script helps), takes me a few hundred hands and I'm usually into my old groove again.
I write software for a living so when I bitch about the software it's just my inner elitist-geek talking. As long as the software isn't so inconvenient for me that I'm unable to multi-table effectively and am folding hands wrestling with an awkwark UI...I'm good.

Pretty much...he's been retired. I played the RTR $20k freeroll the other day with him & used a few $26 tokens I'd won from those 1800FTP SnGs. Finally had a FT appearance in one of those f'n $26 10 table MTTs. Pissed away a few hundred bucks on those before finally swearing off MTTs
I don't imagine I'll go back to FT -- it's not any fishier than stars IMO, and stars just has a bigger player base + better software. When my Bonus whoring's done I'm back to stars. Come with! Or join me over at UB. Msg me if you do so we can whore the refer a friend Bonus |

Hey man, first post!
I feel the need to say something here. Probably it's because of the geography lol, who knows.
I really like your approach to this game. I'm not talking about skill level or hands played or cash won. It's all about patience ie. Bankroll Management, table selection, constant education. Too often, poker players want to toss money into a website and hit that home run, go big or go home attitude. The only successful players in this game are the ones who treat it like a long term game, which is what I see coming from you.
I hate saying good luck at anything, especially in relation to poker. So cheers and good play to you! I hope one day I can stack you |

Thanks man
"good skill" makes a far better well-wishing phrase than "good luck" for poker, unless you're a results-oriented thinker
I (like most n00bs to the game) started with a 'go big or go home' attitude. It wasn't that long ago that I was arguing with spoonitnow about the importance of Bankroll Management
I'm the kinda guy who's gotta learn things the hard way, and thankfully it only took me 5 or 6 times having my microstakes BR getting decimated by bad beats at 100NL/200NL before I was finally sold on the idea of mitigating the damage caused by negative variance.
...It's only a matter of time before you're stacking me at Niagara, or some home game ...Surely I'll be helpless to your uber-thinking 200NL grinder skillz |

re stars, i played party the other day and it was fairly relaxed/soft - so dunno. Should probably get off Full Tilt though!
May hit you up on that UB Bonus thing soon, so long as the Bonus + Rakeback + first deposit bonus combo can be done. I'll check out the specs, you say clearing at $1/100 playing 50nl FR? depending on expiry stuff I'll either hit it now or in May. |

Yep I think you should get off FT
I was like 1PTBB/100 over 30k hands there. Admittedly I was new to 50NL and there was a little adjustment period where I kinda veered too far outside my tight 'a game', so it probably isn't all that fair of a comparison but...
at UB I'm running 5ptbb over my first 10k hands. I'll probably make my way to party or Ongame eventually. I get the impression Ongame's even softer...

Nice work on the first $500 on UB!
I haven't figured out my real winrate at FT - this month its 4.9ptBB/100 (10k hands), last month 3.8 (20k hands) or something.
So if UB is even easier, then maybe moving to UB would be +++EV?
but FT is so comfortable... |

Update: roll just hit 2200 after a good weekend, so I'll be taking my first stab at 100NL.
When I moved from 25NL to 50NL I erred on the side of "LAG", so this time I think I'll start tighter, and loosen up as I get more comfortable. 25NL-50NL was not that smooth for me, but I've plugged many holes since then so here's hopin' that 100NL will treat me better. |

$1k in 12 days?
Probably the most I've ever made from this game in a 12 day period evah .
I won a few $500 tourney purses before, but this is bigger in perspective...

Update:
Heater kept going throughout last weekend and I was up to 3350. Then I got the inevitable smackdown & lost 4.5 BIs in like 2 days & have settled back down to 2900, which is still awesome cause I'm +$700 since moving from 50NL 11 days ago. about 14 hours of play = $50/hr. Better than my dayjob
I made $740 last night playing 1/2 live. Had like 3 sets pay off... It doesn't count for the BR though. That mostly goes to the "give wifey some play money so she likes poker" tax. I think it's working....today she caught me on youtube when I'm supposed to be working from home and she said "WTF are you doing on youtube when you could be doing something productive like playing poker?" |

Heh, I'm a bad influence on you.
...next thing you know I'll find you drunk on the 200NL tables
You better get on 100NL before I hit 200NL! You're more than ready for it in BR and skill, as long as you don't let the big numbers turn you into a nit or tilt you.
100NL really doesn't play differently than 50NL (my experience after 5k hands anyway). Same ol' nits, laggs, stations & taggs to deal with in exactly the same way you do at 50NL... |

I'm back down to $4200 after a bit of a swing...
I;m heading south for some cold water late next week, no computer coming with! so I'll probably barely play until about May 10th, but after that loads! I signed an 18hr/week contract to have more time to surf/climb/run/yoga/poker/life.
So you better get moving!!! |

Even tho I'm down $150 last night, I'll still beatcha there with the almost 2-week headstart you've given me. plus that's 16 BIs for you and only 12 for me :p
But if I can't by then maybe you'll overtake me if you play more than my hour a night (c'ept on the weekends).
Hittin' up the casino tomorrow tho with drew & sweetlemon -- pwn a little 200NL live. Live poker's great |

Gah, been hitting some bumpy patches...was down to 3400 after a brutal stretch. Now I'm sitting at 3600, so it's looking good for daven beating me to 5k
Even so, this month has been good. I'm up $1900 + $250 RB so my BR more than doubled this month which is pretty awesome in retrospect... |

Snowing? D'u live in alaska by chance?
And I think I've gotta raise the white flag already. No progress. Stuck in the mid 3000s My laggy-ass has been high-variance. I've been running like 17/14 for some reason lately. I like it, but I've been running into a sick amount of negative variance... |

Are you a NZ'er or just visiting? Cool country at any rate to get snowed on and be able to surf in the same day
I'm actually running at 18/14 over the last 2k hands... Raising PPs from any position, raising 3 limpers with Q9o on the button etc... It's been interesting...we'll see if I keep it up over 20k hands or more and what my winrate will be over those. |

Very cool. It's on my 'top 3 places to visit' list.
BR: 4300 (+ waiting on $250 RB from last month).
I pissed away $400 or so pretending I know how to play HU, then went back to the FR and have been running 10ptbb/100 over the last 4k hands |

i hear you on the heads-up thing, I'm trying to force myself to sit out when a table gets shorthanded, if nothing else cos it affects my game on the other tables. But mostly cos i suck HU...
10ptBB/100!!! nice one dude! $20/100 and you're only $450 away - keep it up and it's only one 2.5k hand session to the $5k bankroll!!
i also pissed away some br - pretending i knew how to lag it up (25-20) playing 6-max while clearing a party $100 Bonus. I got action, but KK<AA (standard), AA<KK (not happy), AA<JJ all in on 789 flop and the 6 outer hit, and some less standard spew, all in all a 6 buy-in hit. I've ground 2 back playing fullring, and get another 2 shortly when i clear the Bonus. where's the finish line again?!? |

I bailed on UB. Not much FR traffic there anymore...only 5 or so FR tables at 100NL during the evening, and even less during the day.
Now I've got money on stars, Ongame, and Party, just trying out some different sites, really. I'll probably clear the party Bonus then bail. Hate the software.
BR: 4100. Huge breakeven stretch. I think I might be spewing a little too much due to some overconfidence at 100NL Time to tighten back up... |

| How have the new rooms been treating you thus far? I know it's only been a day but I'm interested in reading an update. |

Everest is nice except not enough flexibility on resizing tables, so 8 is my limit there. Enough action so far, and Bonus clears pretty quickly.
You can play any rooms? where you from? |

I'm canadian.
Settled into Ongame at nextpoker. Played 1k hands so far there. So far so good. The software is great in terms of UI, but it's a CPU hog, and with PT/PAHud + about 8 tables + mp3s going, things get pretty slow. I may just need to upgrade past the 2Ghz mark, but still...f'n poker software shouldn't be that CPU demanding
Even so, I like the action. Good juicy avg pot sizes. Only problem is that since it's a euro site, things get pretty dead around 10PM EST. It's best in the afternoon/early evening...lots of tables at the 100NL/200NL.
I can't even bring myself to clear the tiny little party Bonus, but maybe I should...I'll probably play it past 10PM when Ongame's dead. The software is meh, but apparently there's some skins that make it better.
I'm actually thinking of taking my money off stars and going back to FT...just for the RB. After this round of the gauntlet maybe. |

[stars plug]
what do you have against stars? 35% Rakeback @ SN + excellent tournaments, support, software.

That's it for me. I'm not gunna play stars exclusively at the moment, so I'll never hit SN.
I may go back when I get sick of donking around at all these little sites, but it'll probably be when I have to cause there's not enough 400NL FR traffic or something... |

can't believe that neither of us is at $5k yet. Stupid May. I was certain I'd be there by now. Maybe it's time for a monster session... |

Funny how May sucked brutally for both of us.
Hopefully I'll be at 200NL by June. A few modest winning sessions will do the trick.
You my friend are in dire need of a monster session. |

May wrapup:
Ended at 4800 for 1.2k profit in the month. My second month of +$1000 profit in a row (since moving up to 100NL) so I'm happy with those results. I still donked off a bunch playing donkaments, headsup, 6-max, and beyond outside my BR, but thankfully not TOO much.
I'm feeling better about my FR game than I ever have, and am looking forward to 200NL.
Speaking of which, June has been +EV for me so far...I'm up to 5200 having JUST cracked it after last session + an Ongame Bonus.
Sooo......I will moving up to 200NL very soon. I'm pumped |

| Good luck man, I hope you pwn 200nl. Honestly, if you play your 'A' game, you'll be just fine. The hardest transition is getting used to the bets being twice as big. Just remember that everything is relative. |

If that's true, I'm golden.
I'm already used to adapting to the doubling numbers (25NL wasn't THAT long ago), and have already played maybe 2k hands at 200NL + a little live. I'm far more confident moving up here than I was from 25NL to 50NL. After playing enough different limits, you start to realize that it really is the same game. The differences are subtle. |

you win. Nice one! I'm moving up to 100nl at $5k. But I'm regularly playing the 200bb tables at 50nl, so I kinda have already. |
