Gobbatino - thanks man. Didn't want you to think your post went unnoticed. I think the plan for now is to take an indefinite break.

As for the last hand - I did shove here thinking he bet/calls with KJ or KT or even AK. Q9 raises me on the flop and AQ is a cooler? PLEASE tell me AQ is a cooler there Sad . I finished down 2 buyins including winning a 200bb+ pot with 44 on a 447 board to 77. That doesn't make me happy.

I am going to try a new approach to things. I made need to make a prop bet and I am not really sure what it will include but I want to read and reread a few articles (every day/other day) as well as write in-depth dissections of a certain amount of hands (per day/month), write a theory article, watch certain Poker Videos, specifically Jared Tendler videos at Stox and not show any signs of tilt or whine about anything. That does not discount posting hands for discussion that may seem standard though and were coolers. I'd love to post like 5 hands a week that I went in-depth on here and generate good discussion.

I'm going to celebrate 4 months tomorrow with my gf. Gnight. Hi page 20. Shit, was it page 25 I said it would mean "I made it"?

Hey man I read through your blog quite often but never really find anything to say, guess you could say I just lurk around.

You mention you seem to struggle with tilt/spew etc, and I do at times pretty badly myself. Breaks and that help of course, as does exercise/eating good/spending time with family etc. But one thing that really helped me alot though was reading up on psychology more and understanding how our brains work. Also reading some psychology books that are poker related will definately increase your awareness about these things. I know it helped me alot, and although I can't really gaurantee it'll help you, I think it will at least have some sort of positive impact on your game. I have a couple recommendations so if you're interested in some reading let me know.

I can remember one time I was so frustrated I ended up dropping down 2 levels below where I normally grinded after taking 5 days off. But the readings (although long), have definately helped somehow indirectly I guess. Just recenlty I went through a huge downswing so I know exactly how you're feeling right now, I almost threw up when I realized how many buyins I lost.

Anyway, good plan on taking a break, and congrats on 4 months with the girl.

heh, for sure man. I have never taken any psyc courses at all but I wish I have/did and might actually consider going to do some out of interest in the near future.

The Poker Mindset by Matthew Hilger is definately a must read. It talks alot about tilt, types of tilt, downswings etc, and also goes into goal setting and the +'s/-'s of certain types of goals and what will be most beneficial to your poker game and overall mental state. I won't go too much further than that on it, it's a pretty simple read but it's definately +EV.

Also, I read this article on how to achieve emotional control, not sure how it helped, but I feel it has somehow indirectly. It was posted in iopq's operation awhile back so give him the credit: http://www.buildfreedom.com/tl/tl12.shtml You may or may not have gotten into this stuff with your courses (I'm sure you have in some way but at least this will probably be in a different writing style which is always good for the brain).

Psychology of Poker by Alan Schoonmaker: I haven't read this one yet, I don't even own it yet, but I guess it seems like a decent read. Probably worth it, I find even the worst Poker Books have at least some value in them so there's definately no harm in getting your hands on more reading material. Dranger7070 read both this and The Poker Mindset and he said it wasn't as good, though still had value.

It's hard to put a specific value on reading stuff like this. I think some people will get more out of it than others, so if you decide to do the readings I hope you get as much as you can out of them.

kmind, you need to take a break. I don't think you have a healthy relationship with poker right now.

And this:

That guy was a huge nit and insta called preflop and on the flop I kind of figured alright he has it. Was hoping somehow he could have QJ/JT ld0. But the thing is he can have AJ as well which equals the 55 combos.

I looked at a post yesterday and something clicked (hopefully) unexpectedly. It basically reintroduced my 2 month ago focus on just exploiting everyone. Shoring up my ranges to play my very best according to their strategy. Today went well despite the last hand. I still finished up (barely) so I'll take it.

I'm going to do the range exercises as well as exploitation thinking constantly. I think connecting the two will help tremendously. Ironically, when just thinking about ranges I changed my play a lot. I really do have to exploit or thinking about ranges is just meh. I think I might post all my shit on here because I have always been secretive in a way when studying. Not really secretive, just private. I leave for awhile with my gf Tuesday and won't have computer access so tomorrow I am going to do some stuff for school, ISF, and then hopefully post some range exercises on here.

I don't minddd flop but leading turn screams Jx and there's no need really on such a dry board.

Might make more sense on a more draw heavy board. But on a more draw heavy board, you should be squeezing flop probably.

So morale of the story.. you'll never end up flatting flop AND leading turn really.

Anyways, screw the old me I'm better. Not bitter, better.

Up 3 buyins today. About to complete a study task. Then off to bed and won't be playing poker for awhile as I'll be vacationing with the gf to my grandparents mountain house.

School messed up things so only got to hang out with the gf at our houses (...parents' houses Sad ) but really enjoyed the time spent with her and will miss her a lot once school starts as she'll be 3.5hr away. I had a dream I transferred to VA Tech with my best friend and had the time of my life. Oh well, VCU is still better. Not really.

Anyways, poker is going ok. Not really running well. Actually running semi-bad since playing for the first time in like a week the other day. I have been trying to ramp up my aggression for the right reasons. Specifically, I am going to become a great 3bettor. I made a nice 3 barrel bluff shove that worked vs. a reg the other night. I seem to still be making slight mistakes when unsure on if I should bet or check and what not. That's ok. My main focus of exploiting has been working quite well and I am very happy about it.

School starts tomorrow and I could not be more sad/pissed but it SHOULD be my final year finally. I've enjoyed the social college stuff but classes are meh. Especially now since I have to commute to school. I'll be taking more classes than usual and the majority have to be upper level and I cannot fail one. So yeah, a lot of pressure. Sigh. I do have Monday/Wednesday off as well as only one class on Friday which is in the morning. This means longer weekends...yay. My gf and I are trying to see each other every? weekend which I am happy about so we'll get to spend some longer weekends when I visit her as she only has one Monday morning class.

Speaking of my gf, we play card games 24/7 when we are together. I mean our friends are amazed at how often we play. It's usually just us 2 too, meaning our games are somewhat limited. She's become really great at card removal stuff and it also helps me too which I think is great for poker. I was going to submit an article about relating other card games to poker but just didn't have the time. I really wish she'd let me teach her poker but she says she'll just lose all my money. Boo.

I haven't been able to sleep much because of certain things. Poker being the main thing. So I purchased some nice bedding stuff to make it a much more comfortable and enjoyable night for myself. I haven't received my comforter set yet but just the sheets, microfoam mattress topper and microfoam pillow alone have already worked wonders. I'm also thinking about buying some new shoes finally and getting my gf a bunch of random shit for her apartment. I think it's funny how I can be a 50NL reg or whatever and still find a lot of money I can withdrawl while keeping a way overrolled bankroll. That's good and bad in different ways but that's a whole different topic.

This was meant as in running normal. Well, more normal but still bad of course. Today was back to just being shat on completely. Hmm. Back to the grind.

I honestly want to be like "oh who cares about running bad let's get it out of my head" but I really don't know how when that's all I get. Maybe it'll just take longer to even things out or something and hopefully I skyrocket at some point up stakes.

Because I'm 10x better than I was 4 months ago when my results were really really good. I was basically flawless at 50NL for months and months and then I get extremely better (ISF coaching as well as other friends) and I just get constantly shat on. I constantly have the top of my range when villain is beating me and they'll fold when I have something. I literally flopped a set of the nuts probably 6 times today and in all 6 they folded on the flop if I bet or turn if the flop went c/c. It's just annoying. I'd much much rather be lucky than good to an extent at poker.

Ok way too addicted to quit but I could go on and on about that which I'd rather not as I could easily see me talking myself into quitting. I'm going to start making a lists of things to do and actually do them. #1: Create an exploitation table thing. I have school for 6 hours tomorrow, figure I have about 6 hours to complete this. I have to know if my theoretical side of the game is in fact correct. Dammit have to get up in 5 hours.

Failed the exploitation thing already. But yay I won something! I won 1st prize of the run bad. Seems like everyone else at FTR is winning this award too. I went down 2 buyins today very quickly and finished up $4. Happy about that. I swear to God though I'm not going to take too much more of this. Insane the way the board ends up. I mean, runner runner shit all the time. I'd be up quite more without that shit. People wonder why I complain? Fuck that, try running bad your whole fucking career. Bbickes said we all wouldn't be playing NLH if we hadn't run good when we started...I admit to not running as badly as could but I definitely ran well below average. The shit hasn't equaled out either.

What I am seeing now at 50NL is people actually going apeshit preflop and these nits who I have 500+ hands have ~0 3bet% yet are now 3bet bluffing the shit out of me. I'm almost convinced they all have it out for me. I just lost in a 4bet pot AQ < K9. I'm telling you, these guys are so shitty but win constantly against me. They do shit that makes no sense and they have no idea what they are doing. That's the shit that hurts the most. I was crushing too when I just clicked buttons. Now that I know what I am doing I'm hitting a huge wall. Fuc.k it I will prevail though, no worries. My graphs are so dumb now. Complete roller coasters. Run average run average run average and watch my winnings skyrocket then run "kmind normal" and blow it all. Repeat. Fuc.k that. You can't even say fuc.k on these boards.

Meh, I've felt the same way lately. Dropped over a 3rd of my roll, came very close to quitting. If it wasnt that I know theres no way I'd ever start again from scratch I probably would have. Havnt played for at least 2 weeks now, and I'm away this weekend. Hopefully if I start playing again in September my head will be a bit better.

Does suck when things just keep not going your way though. Feels like months since someone called me with a 2nd best hand. I dont understand how all my bluffs seem to get called, yet all my value bets get folds (unless they cooler me). Shit like that messes with your head.

Definitely. Yeah, I'll be away all weekend to forget this shit but it is comforting that others feel the same. I wish we just got what we deserved. Glad to see ya back though Smile

Blaah.. if it makes you feel better, I lost 1/4ish of my roll practically last month... it's all part of the grind sadly Sad Varianceee. But things will turn for all of us!

naah... you can try, but I won't allow it!

how many sessions do you play to get in 1.7k hands?

The problem with variance is that sometimes it lasts a while in terms of hands I feel. So for the ppl that play regularly but smaller volume, downswings and bad variance feels like it lasts forever! But it will still turnn.

You'll get out of this dude!

Thanks man it's just like I feel I switch my game up so when I downswing I accuse it on my new playing abilities but I kind of forget how to get back to how I was playing. I mean no real drastic changes and usually only do stuff with what I think makes sense. And admittedly it took me 3 sessions or so because I just don't usually have time for the longer sessions anymore. It sucks. The last thing I want to do is post just about losses and try to get sympathy but all I have are losses or breakeven stretches.

Damn. Crushed a reg all session long and he's challenging me HU any stakes ha. Anyways, I was doing so well the past few sessions but right now I just ended down 2.5 buyins. EV wise I am down like 1/5 of a buyin so I definitely didn't play poorly. It also doesn't include losing QQ < KK to a huge donk and QQ < KK to a "reg" kind of tighty but he 3bet me in the blinds to an extreme amount while on the button so I thought he was just being horrible and shipped it in.

I couldn't wait to show my updated graph with me skyrocketing upwards but Sad . I also decided to keep playing after initially losing to beats and just "laughed it off". This helped a lot with my tilt. Thanks Alexos.

And there you have your biggest problem. You are waay too much results oriented. Stop it.

Fuck graphs. Just play and concentrate on the decision at hand, and not on the excitement about showing off graphs to your peers.

It's in no way to brag or anything. Just prove that I am winning I guess. Tbh, I have NO idea how to not be results oriented when I pay for everything with poker money. If someone had any tips I'd love to hear them because I completely agree with being results oriented.

I play with ridiculous amounts of buyins for each level so in a way I am. But nothing like knowing if I ran just barely bad I'd be at higher stakes. If I get a real job I'd easily just quit which I don't want to do for a number of reasons.

Alright. Goal for the month is to be up 5 buyins. I will not say where I am at so far and I won't get in a convo. on if I should make buyin goals. I have half the month to do it even though I will be extremely busy. GOGOGOGOGO

Seat 2: SuitsUs showed [Qh Qc] and lost with two pair, Queens and Jacks
Seat 3: skimman showed [5c 5s] and won ($179) with a full house, Fives full of Jacks
Seat 4: Dexlexia didn't bet (folded)
Seat 5: cashout4me (button) folded on the Flop
Seat 6: LaynLow111 (small blind) folded before the Flop

I have to admit, I understand that we're supposed to run worse than we possibly ever have (3 months now for me...53k hands) but at the microstakes it seems like it shouldn't matter much. I know I misplayed some of those hands but please tell me most are coolers. What you do not see here is me literally missing more flops than ever. You will not believe how many times I hit a set with AA but only AA. I'd rather hit my sets with TT-22. I'm getting 3bet by nits nonstop to my steals. It's ridiculous. I'm playing 17/12 too. In no way am I spewing too much. The AK hand was played poorly though villain was pretty loose.

That said, I am working very hard on improving. I have almost finished writing an article that will hopefully spark discussion.

I'm not sure if I am moving down or not. I have plenty to play 100NL but I am looking at 25NL. I'm now not able to afford the things I promised my gf and that makes me look like failure. Broken promises suck. My bankroll isn't my money though. I need to keep remembering that.

ps I have yet to get it allin preflop AA vs. anything 100bb deep this month

check my july graph. You're right though, if you're losing over 50k hands at low stakes then it's not just -ve variance.
Also, i'm sure that you've been on the right end of at least one or two coolers during that time.

comments from a FR nit

hand 1: 66
cooler, although this is often a fold pre

hand 2: KK<AA

hand 3: QQ<something. Meh, not even technically a bad beat

hand 4: AK
spew, unless you're super comfortable this villain 4-bet bluffs in non blind confrontations. Put him on a range etc.

hand 5: QQ
I call the min-3-bet without reads

hand 6: JJ
reads determine whether this play was ok. Fine given that villain was so shallow i guess.

hand 7: AA
your turn bet sizing was bad. Given the inability to fold if a river draw hits, I just overbet to $17

hand 8: QQ
um, you played the flop poorly. There is a button with FOLD on it.

hand 9: AK
bet turn a little bigger, cos again I can see you calling a river club...

hand 10: losing flips sucks

I know you don't want to hear it but there is obviously a problem. I have one too and maybe I can help a little. Are you over thinking. Is it possible your not one level up on a lot of these guys. Try to follow me here, you may actually be out thinking yourself. Your thinking in terms of ranges, and what they are thinking that you are trying to represent, when in all actuality almost all of the regs are barely at level 1 ( what does he have) If you think beyond what does he think (level 2) I have with those guys and level 1 ( what does he have) with almost all others you will be leveling yourself. You need to dial down the skills and that in itself is a skill. Stop trying to "represent", stop overestimating FE, and stop trying to "outplay" the bad players. You know they are bad and you know the key to beating anything under $200NL, VB VB VB. Make good hands or fold. Fuck balance, fuck merging, and fuck how bad they are, they can't fold and they surely can't count. they aren't watching you, they aren't taking notes on you, and they don't care what you are doing, they just care about the two cards in there hand, and by playing tighter, aggressive with good hands or equity we profit. I forget this as much as you. I typed this for me as much as you. Here is something to think about, from an old CR video

Generally, just avoid the good players. When getting re-raised, or 3bet, find better spots

Thank you guys. I had 2-3 winning days and then lost with the second nuts to the nuts to a donk and then middle two pair to top two pair vs. a donk both for stacks and took away my winnings. It's so frustrating. I'm getting sweated by a couple of guys and it seems to be going well at least. Literally both of the guys in both sweats said "Wow, holy crap, I have never seen worse turn and river cards in my life" throughout the sweats while laughing in disbelief. That helps in some sense making me feel more like poker shouldn't be like this but wow. I'm working on leaks as it is anyways.

Alexos - Yeah I think I need to forget any strategy videos and strictly watch these

Jyms - I feel like me and you should talk more. I'll try to get on AIM more often.

As an insult to injury, I just got rushed to the ER who then had to staple my head because something split my head open. Good day. Fun life the past 3 months...

Embarrassingly enough, I had my xbox 360 and cable box on top of my tv but it like barely fits on top and is really not safe up there. Anyways, I was trying to do something behind the TV while talking to the cable guy both the xbox and cable box (corner) fell on my head. I just kept talking and was like wow wtf did I just do. So after he hung up I fell to the floor and held my head thinking how much this stings and how there's probably going to be a bruise. But then I noticed blood on the floor and I thought it was my dog's until I started seeing my head squirt out blood like a volcano. Literally. It was shooting out of my head. So I was like wtffff and put a towel over it and called whoever was in my phone first which was my dad and he called an ambulance and what not but we got ahold of my neighbor first and she came and took me to the ER. They said I was really lucky and only need a couple of staples. My parents were like crying so I felt really bad and I hate saying this but really put things into perspective. My neighbor was so extremely nice too.

I have 2 tests tomorrow and emailed both teachers. One was extremely cool with it and the other teacher hasn't responded and I'm worried because in the syllabus it says that there are no make up exams period. Laaaaame. I'm eagerly awaiting the not only poker run good but the life run good as well that should be heading my way. Looks like I will probably have to move down stakes and rebuild my roll because I have to withdraw soon. GG poker.
