Nothing better than playing the odd MTT in bed I thought about a desktop but my wife is planning to open up a bar/restaurant and would like to live close to it when it opens. Given that its in one of the most expensive parts of town I doubt that we could afford a big place where I can have a study thus me going for the laptop. 4-5 weeks delivery sucks though. |

Here are my stats so far for August. I am not too unhappy about it but what is actually a good "Went to SD%"? I have the suspicion that mine is a little bit low. What do you guys think?

First shitty session in a while Loosing hurts so much even if its 'only' 2.5 BI. But all the big hands are pretty standard I believe but I could have folded the QQ hand, but by then I was a little bit tilting. All without reads:
******* Hand 1 ********
This hand was tilt. Everything pointed towards AA/KK but somehow I couldn't fold it.

That would be running HOT. Thanks for the reply but I actually meant "Went to Showdown%". I sometimes have the feeling that I can be pushed off hands too easily. |

Interesting reading. Sounds like you've been learning loads along the way! Why shorthanded over full-ring? I'm also starting to get a little more serious about poker lately - where you at? I'm in Wellington, so if you're here we could walk through a couple of sessions - downside is that I'm learning to play limit ring rather than sh no limit...
I got lucky starting out and turned $50 into $600-ish fast, pulled out $400 and now playing with around $120. Also got lucky that the only sites I was playing were party and Empire, so didn't wreck any Rakeback potential. I'm signing up for Purple Lounge (Prima) today for what looks like a pretty good deal (100% 1st deposit Bonus $300 that should clear in about 2k hands at 0.25-0.5 no limit, + 30%Rakeback). After that I might try and Bonus whore/rakeback journey for a while - think I'll have a few questions to ask you cos it sounds like you have that sorted.
Good luck with the new computer, thought about two monitors? |

| Hey Silu, my went to showdown is 25% and my W$SD is 56%, we're pretty close there. My W$WFS is 33%, supposedly it should be around 40% is what I've read though. I'm not really too sure how to up this number. I'm thinking maybe it applies more to game where your opponents are capable of folding rather than ones where you're waiting to hit something solid and value town them? |

Kia Ora Bro!
I live in Auckland. I decided to play 6-max NL as it is besides Stud perhaps the best way to clear bonuses. Also I never played Limit in my life. I also can only 2-table (due to my slow laptop) and fullring would just bore me to death. I am more than happy to help to direct you to places where you can find out about the best bonuses. Just PM me if you want.
I am thinking about adding a monitor to play 4 tables without overlap but I cannot see myself playing more than that. When I used to play SNG's and MTT's I could see myself multitabling more than 4 but I believe that I miss valuable reads with too many tables open and I am still learning the game. Only just now do I feel 100% comfortable playing 100NL and I am taking shots at 200NL as soon as I reach $6k which is hopefully less than 2 weeks away. |

Thanks for the numbers Galapogos. I had the inkling that I am perhaps too easily be pushed off hands but I don't have that many hands on my regular opponents yet. I only just started to make Ongame my permanent home. |

I haven't been playing much as my back was really sore. As it looks I need surgery on it but I need another doctor consultation after my MRI scan last week. The good news is that my new laptop arrived and its beautiful, fast and shiny.
Played a bit last night and I plan to put in the time this weekend to clear that $500 Bonus on Tower. I have then a $100 Bonus on Empire to clear for which I will try 4-tabling for the first time. As its cleared in raked hands I will play $50nl first to get my feet wet in multi-tabling.
Here the biggest hand of last night. I think I played it well.

Just a quick update. The Rugby World Cup starts on the 7th September and my BR is at $5,515 so I am a little bit short of my goal. However, I love my new laptop (fuck Vista though) and I can now multitable and I finished off the $500 Bonus on Tower today. I will start now a $100 Bonus on Empire and then back to Tower.
My August and the start of September is super swingy. It is not unusual to be 3 BI up and 4 BI down. Overall September is just a tad over a BI down. Here are my stats for August. I couldn't play a lot because of my bad back. I was up way more but I had a little downswing in the last week.

I didn't feel like playing and what did I do? I played and lost. And why is Party/Empire soooo tight? I couldn't find a table with a VPIP over 25?
I played this hand like a monkey and got what i deserved:

I won most of the money back I lost yesterday playing $50nl. Don't worry the bankroll still looks healthy but I wanted to try some different things. The result was 750 hands +$243 at 32BB/100. All I can say is that $50nl on Party is easy.
The operation asked for $6k before the Rugby World Cup which starts in 23hrs. My bankroll is at $5,815 as of now so although I didn't make my goal I know that without my back problems I would have made it.
I think I let this operation die and come back with a new one as soon as I am settled playing $200nl.
In the meantime - GO THE ALL BLACKS! And also Go the Warriors! tonight against the Eels. I am there.

Thanks. I am still at $100nl because my game was not up to scratch lately and I was barely a break-even player thanks to bonuses. I might take you up on talking $200nl when I am settled.
Today I had an interesting session. I thought about a couple of things Lukie and Gabe were talking about:
(a) if in doubt raise
(b) step up the river aggression
Well here is the outcome
Admittingly I was running good because I was raising heaps and bluffed the river a lot. But I was really surprised about the "Went to SD%" and "River AF" figures. Surprisingly opponents mostly looked me up when I had the goods and only a few bluffs got picked off.
I am nearly finished with my second Empire Bonus but I miss the Ongame donkeys. Empire when I am playing is a real nitfest hence my increased aggression.
BTW I am over $6k now and I will be taking shots at $200nl if I continue to run well. Its not long ago that I had too many loosing sessions. |

Maybe its time for another update. BR is at $6500 and I am still at $100nl. I haven't been playing well until the last couple of days and I still think that it might be a little bit too early for me to move up. As you can see the swings in September were pretty big.
I am clearing another $500 no load Bonus on Tower and should I continue to run well then I should be playing $200nl by the end of October. |

| I just started at Tower and am clearing their initial Bonus'. How well do those Bonus's clear that you buy with your PP. Do you find that they are a good substitute for RB? |

If you play 5-max NL the up to 7x bonuses are much better than any RB offer out there. Taken from another website's poster this is about 40-50% contributed for shorthanded and 55-65% contributed for full ring. |

I thought it was good and it was the reason I am planning on making Tower my Home along with my other RB site.
They have those Bonus's every month right? |

They have a points store where you can exchange points for bonuses (I usually buy the $200 Bonus at 7x). From time to time (like I just got one) you get a $500 No Deposit Bonus which clears at 7x and has to be cleared within 30days. At $100nl 5-max this is no problem.
What levels are you playing? |

I am playing 25NL at the moment and ym roll has just cracked the 1k mark (again dam those 50NL shots) and have cleared 30% of the Bonus since last Thursday (grinding the shit out it). I think I will leave my next shot till after I get that Bonus cleared so I will be up another $200 plus any profits (already $200) then I start clearing the subsequent $200 5x no reload that is part of the sign up deal. I like Tower |

I will be finally playing $200NL exclusively after taking shots and not going too well. I have dropped down to $100NL again to work on my game and I made a list of things I wanted to achieve:
1. Increase VPIP to over 20%
2. Increase “Att to steal blinds” to over 30%
3. 3-bet more out of the blinds against habitual button raisers
Well I can say that I achieved all 3 goals and I was running pretty well. Thus my bankroll is just over $7k now and I still have the $500 Bonus from Tower coming.
So the next little operation will be:
Increase BR to $10,500 by 31st December which would mean that I made $10k in my first year of poker. Although, given that summer is approaching, the cricket season is starting next week and work will be hectic, this operation should keep me on track to achieve my goal. |

Have fun. I only ever played tournaments at Sky City but I don't like live play that much. You are from Wellington right? I have just been there for a short 4 day trip with my wife last weekend. The famous Wellington weather was glorious. |

I am quite happy with my game at the moment. I am more of a 20/18 player now and "att to steal" is up to 35%. Also my W$WSF is about 42% which is higher than it used to be. Aggro factors are still about the same.

| Its a public holiday today so I decided to play the 150k tourney on Mansion. I came 420ish. God tourneys are boring. I couldn't get any hands and when my M was down to 8 I got KQs on the button. A guy who had me barely covered limps in EP and I push. Of course he calls with 44 and his hand holds up. |

| My first serious tilt in ages. I was up 1x BI when I lost half a buy-in against a fish who rivered a 2-outer. Within 50 hands I managed to loose 3x buy-ins partly through tilt. When I rivered a set and opp turned/rivered a straight I had to stop. My hands are sweating and I want to throw things through around the room. And I thought I was over tilt but you never know when it rears its ugly head. |

So after being -$687 after about 300 hands I ended up +$150 after 739 hands. Its amazing what a little bit of concentration and flopping well can make.
It also seems that the Mansion sign-up Bonus is better than I originally anticipated. I have cleared a total of $57 with just 317 points. My RB provider cannot give me a correct answer as Mansion are not responding to their e-mails but it could be that I even get 36% contributed Rakeback with it. At least my rake earned is showing up on the stats page. Sweet. And I even have 90 days to clear it. |

Last night was Guy Fawkes night and before I went out to burn myself to death with fireworks I played a small session which ended really nice. I played 361 hands for +$590 at 40bb/100.
My bankroll is at $9306 so I'm right on track to get to my goal. I might even take shots at $400nl soon.
Yesterday I had a quick look through my PT stats and I realized that I am a lifetime looser at $25NL! Maybe I should drop down to rectify it. But I seriously would like to suggest to anyone that Bonus whoring is imperative for building a bankroll. Without bonuses and Rakeback I would be still at $100nl. |

Out of interest if you hit 10k for 2008 what are you setting next year?
Im trying to complete my move to 2/4nl now (playing 1/2 and 2/3 on Bodog, but obviously shot taking comes next.
My br goal for move to 2/4nl is 26.1k (obviously br'ed deep)
have approx 6k to go, but im interested in what 2/4nl shot takers are considering in euro zones?
if youre a 5bbs winner i neach of the 2/4 3/6 games you can look at 27k profit without with RB/bonues added in IMO.
Thoughts? sorry for hijack too! |

Hi Miffed,
Thanks for reading the blog and sorry for not replying earlier.
If I hit $10k for the year I still want to go higher. I had a look at some of the play up to $600nl and nothing what I have seen so far strikes fear into my veins. I think that I am a solid enough player to beat my games at 4 bb/100 on a constant basis. I am still learning while I am playing and try to discover small edges along the way. However, my wife plans to open a bar/restaurant soon and my in-laws asked if I want part of an investment property on Waiheke Island (small island off Auckland which was once a hippies hang-out but becomes more and more upmarket). So given that most of my investments are in shares/term deposits/poker I might have to look to liquidate part of it to raise funds.
I usually have a 30x BI rule before I move up. That means that I should have $12k before moving up to $400nl. After writing that I want to take shots I remembered when I moved up to $100nl underrolled, played with scared money and then in turn my game went to pieces. So I believe that I should play at least 20k hands at $200nl before moving up. |

| Initially I planned to play a long session tonight after taking a couple of days off. Unfortunately my investment portfolio took a $7k hit today (I have to admit though that this particular share was a 20-bagger for me and now its 'only' a 10-bagger). Anyway, I am a little bit upset and given that I am working 10 hour days at the moment I have decided to take a break from my normal game and perhaps just play low buy-in SNG's or some micro PLO. |

Well I have decided to play as I had to get my mind off the blood on the sharemarket today.
I played 823 hands for +$542 at 16.48bb/100 which means that my BR is over $10k for the first time. I think I am playing well and this month I have been beating $200nl at over 9bb/100 despite a rough start. Long may it continue. |

So what started as Operation “Build a bankroll” is now complete. My bankroll is over $10,500 which means that I made more than $10k this year from (almost) nothing.
I started playing way overrolled at the $10NL 6-max tables and am now a regular at the $200NL 5-max tables. During this time I have also signed up to Cardrunners which has helped my game immensely. I believe that I can beat $200NL at 2-4bb/100 over the long run which should give me a shot at $400NL before the end of the year (30x BI rule).
I will not make a new operation for the time being but am tempted to set a new goal for next year which surely should be to be playing $1000NL. I certainly think that I have the poker knowledge and mental application to achieve that. Until then thank you for reading and contributing to my blog over the last few months. |

Thanks for the congrats.
This is my lifetime graph in cash games. I have also played some SNG's and MTT's with limited success.
All I can say to any low-limit grinder is:
a) stick with it - you can get better
b) you must have Rakeback or decent bonuses available.
