My first decent session in ages. 580 hands +183/15.84BB/100 which is pretty good. I was playing really aggressive and I was sure that my VPIP would be much higher as I was raising/3-beting a lot of cards (incl SC's) in position. How did I end up with a VPIP of only 18?? Maybe the cards were just not that good.

I think I layed down my first set ever. This guy was new and I had no reads on him. I hate doing this but I didn't want to get broke in a limped pot. FWIW this was as far as I know the only time I ever limped on this table.

How do you fold the set in that first hand? If he wants to chase his gutter OOP against your reraise, fine. But you have outs and you're up against 2 pairs and combo draws enough here to call him I think.

Yes I did fold and it really irked me for ages. The consensus here was that I should call and I really should have. The reasoning for me was that I was tired, just about to finish and I wanted a winning session. But I'm learning from that for sure.

Also I just got a 6x reload 100% up to $200 from Tower. Last time I played on Ongame this was relatively easy to clear so I will certainly do this one.

I'm really enjoying playing MTT's and Turbo SNG's at the moment. I'm running at +$445 344%ROI and the 15 Turbo's at +$100 40%ROI (small sample). I have been skinned for 1 BI at $100NL by a shortstack. My AQ vs his A8o and he hits two pair. Next was my AK vs his 22 which held up. And then I pushed JJ into his 66 which hit a set on the river. He then even mouthed off at me. I wasn't even tilting but he left soon after. BR is over $3k so I'm happy. Will be playing some MTT's on Bodog and 6-max on Everest over the weekend.

God I have missed those Ongame donkeys. When I signed up on the waiting list he was sitting with 5 buy-ins. I waited for a good hand and I could stack him for his last $90 when he 4-bet my QQ raise with JTs and then called my push. He hopefully won't become a stranger.

Here his stats:

Bankroll up to $3500 now. Not playing many hands but short and winning sessions is all I need.

why the poop does PokerStars always suck out on me? 5x 3rd places in Turbos in a row!!!! Every time within 45 minutes!!! AK vs KT, A9 vs A8, AA vs 99, JT vs J5 and AQ vs AT. Every hand AI preflop and I came out second best. That's the downside of SNG's. I play flawless but I just couldn't catch a break.

May was a very uneventful month. Played more MTT's and SNG's than cash games:

Tomorrow is a public holiday in New Zealand so I decided to try to qualify for the Sunday Million on PokerStars. It's a great starting time for me Monday 9.30am.

Anyway, I never played a Double Shootout tournament but I managed to suck out HU at the first level and managed to qualify. What a nailbiter. I was down to 800 chips when the play was 5-handed (top 4 qualify) and the blinds were at 100/200. I pushed TT UTG and got called by the BB with A8s. My hand held up. I was pretty elevated when the last guy got kicked out.

First I thought that I might just take the money but it is not very often that I can enter the big tourneys so I will definetely play it. Only cost me about $25 to enter (I played 2x double shootout satellites).

Out in the Sunday Million at around 4005 - thanks Riverstars.

Me in BB with AKs and I have around 7500 chips. folded to SB who pushes with 2000 chips. Flips over J9o and rivers a 9. Then me on Button with QQ. Raise in front of me. I re-raise - he calls. Flop all low cards rainbow. He checks - I push - he calls with AKo. River is a K. Riverstars can suck my balls.

I don't see how you can ever leave PokerRoom no matter what the Bonus with the way these guys pay off. I was down $200 yesterday due to badbeataments but gained it back and then some today. Here's a small example of some of the donktastic action I saw:

I'm questioning myself why I ever left Ongame. Ahja, the software is pretty useless.

I usually play on Tower where they have good non-deposit bonuses going all year round which you can buy with player points. I can't recall the last time PokerRoom had a reload Bonus? I also get 30% Rakeback on Eurobet so I probably never will have to leave Ongame again.

Yeah, I need to hook myself up with some kind of Ongame Rakeback. Too lazy to sign up to a different site though.

Hey austriaco,
I have built my bankroll from $50 to $600 in three months playing the NL 10 and NL 25 Party Poker cash games. However, I have had trouble beating the NL 50 games (have tried at Party and on Everest Poker so far) as players are very aggressive with their made hands (raises, re-raises, check-raises both on the flop and the river), rarely bluff (making you fold a lot in order to save bets) and do not pay me often enough with my made hands for me to make a profit consistently. Right now I find myself with three options:

-Bonus whoring at the NL 25 games at other rooms keeping gambling to a minimum. Playing 6-tables to accelerate the clearing. Clearing bonuses at a level I cannot beat is a losing strategy from my experience.
-Staying at a beatable NL 25 at a room with Rakeback
-Make it to $1500 with the two options above and do online rounding to scout and test NL 50, NL 100 and NL 200 games to find the beatable ones and become a regular there with Rakeback.

I see that you have built your bankroll from $500 to $4,000 in 6 months. From what I read, you went up to $1500 clearing bonuses at the NL 25, then took it to where it is now by playing the NL 50 and NL 100 at Poker Room. I also see that you had trouble winning the NL 50 and 100 at Eurobet, InterPoker, and Ladbrokes. Is there anything you would have done or wouldnt have done if you could do it all over again? Any advise for those trying to do the same thing you have done. Thanks. I enjoy reading your progress and it inspires me to keep grinding.

Hi Leopardo,

Thanks for reading the blog. I am glad that at least one person gets something out of it. Yes I cleared a lot of bonuses just 2-tabling some of the easiest to clear ones on i.e. Party, Empire, some Ongame skins etc. However, what I would do different is not to switch between too many sites anymore. I had especially lots of troubles on sites with good bonuses+ Rakeback i.e. Crypto skins and I also didn’t have much joy on the Prima skins. This could be down to the times I am playing (NZ has a disadvantage here) but I also think that the opposition is better there than other sites i.e. Ongame is very fishy, so is Everest, Party/Empire is easy and to an extent Ladbrokes.

I found the nitty approach to be the best to beat $25nl and $50nl. That means that I have very, very tight calling/raising ranges out of position but I loosen up a bit in position. Also one thing that I do much more than I used to is table selection. If I think that there are too many aggressive players on my table I leave. Also when I raise in position at those levels, I c/bet ¾ of the pot against a single opponent almost 90% of the time. If I get called I slow down unless I have a made hand or a great draw.

There are many good articles here on this site by players who have far more experience than me but I can give you some basic guidelines:

1. Position, position, position. Its perhaps the most important thing to remember
2. Do not slowplay. If you have a made hand bet it. That gives the times you are semi-bluffing far more respect.
3. Raise/re-raise your good hands in position. Take the initiative pre-flop.

Read some of the articles in the beginners section. There is a wealth of information there for you to grab and digest. I have read every article which is stickified in this forum and it helped my game immensely.

Good luck at the tables!

I have not been playing many hands but I have been playing well. Since joining Cardrunners my thought processes are far more complex than they used to be and I try to make the right decisions.

In this hand I raised JJ UTG+1 and got 3-bet by a good player out of the SB. In previous hands on this table I raised a lot pre-flop (due to good hands) and have been betting/re-raising in almost every hand I was in. My image must have been of someone who cannot find the call button as I was either folding or raising. Here I almost folded pre-flop and it might have been the correct play but I thought that he might try a squeeze play and simply called for set value. Flop was great for me but I often would have just called the flop bet. Here the 2 hearts on the flop worked to my advantage as I could rep a flush draw here. The size of the raise was a problem. I could raise big but then I would do the pushing basically myself. I wanted him to get his money in the middle. As my image was pretty aggro I decided a close to mini-raise would look like a donkish play.

Busted. I always like making quads and getting paid. It's so much sweeter when the pot is one of the biggest one I have ever played.

It took me a bit less than 5k hands to clear the $200 Bonus on Tower. From Poker I made +671 / 6.8BB/100 which is quite good and standard.

I will continue to clear the PokerStars Bonus playing Turbo SNG's and MTT's. I really want to get better at those. I am really pleased with my cash game and thanks to Cardrunners my leaks have mostly been plugged.

Here my favourite hand of the day. I was hunting for his scalp all day.

I had my best MTT finish so far. A 3rd place in a $10+1 180 on Stars. I should have won it but I didn't win the last coin flip I needed. I had 77 vs his ATo and he hits a A on the turn. I was bigstack pretty early on and never relented. Was chip leader until we were 3-handed. It's somehow so frustrating and still quite rewarding. MTT players must be a special breed.

Just a small end-of-the-month update. I have been concentrating on Turbo SNG's on PokerStars a bit because

a) I like playing them while working off their Bonus
b) It really helped my MTT bubble and final table play
c) I can play them whilst intoxicated and still beat them

I started off really well this month whilst clearing a $200 Bonus on TowerGaming. Ongame has always been good to me which kind of makes up for the crappy software and disconnection issues.

I started really well in MTT's and I'm only break-even for the Turbo SNG's which is expected. I have never played Turbo's before in my life and I suffered some bad beats on the bubble. However, I still do enjoy them a lot and July has already started off well. I believe that 20% ROI on the $27 Turbo's is certainly achievable multi-tabling. Here the non so great SNG/MTT return:

I haven't been playing cash in weeks. Why did I waste money on those Turbo SNG's Laughing I wish that all sessions would be as profitable as this one:

The 5x or 6x bonuses are relatively easy to clear. The 7x Bonus (as far as I know) are still OK. Because its on the Ongame network there are always tables available. The software is sometimes glitchy but the deposit and cash out from Tower is nothing but a breeze. I would suggest going for the small bonuses i.e. not bigger than $200 but then you can always buy new bonuses with your points from the store. Certainly recommended.

This particular session was on Party was I got a $100 (4x) Bonus offer from them.

Hi silu_nz,

Is there a 6max in Ongame? I thought they had only 5max available there, no?

Thanks

5-max is the sites default SH table size. But players are allowed to create their on tables so quite often you will see a few 6-max tables.

I'm sorry for not updating this blog often anymore but I am suffering from a very bad back at the moment and I have not been playing much as sitting down is not that good for me.

Anyway, what has happened. I have cleared a $100 Bonus on Party in 2k hands which I managed at +$273/6.85 BB/100. But I still don't like Party's software and I'm glad I left there.

I was contemplating playing on Betfair or Poker Heaven but I didn't like either software so I decided to go to Hollywood Poker. And my first session was all up and down. Especially against the shortstacks as you can see here.

Because my back is so bad I cannot sit down - at all. I can only stand up, limp or lay down. As my wife was having a night shift last night I decided to play some tourneys in bed. I played 2 small buy-in ones where I bubbled both. Yes both. One was when I tried to re-steal on the button with TT and I had him covered. He flipped over A4o for all his stack (!!) and of course the Ace was the first card off the deck. No problem, they were small buyins. But this hand had me nearly throwing stuff out of the window. Luckily Party doesn't allow observer chat at the moment because I typed "I hope you die off **** you M*********) at least 10x. And I thought I don't tilt.

Thanks to my back injury, time in front of the computer was very limited this month. The result was the least played number of hands ever. However, I still made my minimum goal which is $500/month. Including bonuses I got there.

My game is very solid at the moment. I especially get paid off by your standard regular TAG’s against which I usually struggled. My 3-betting range has widened considerably and my blind play has been satisfactory. The main problem is my value bet sizing. I still haven’t figured out how to extract maximum value out of my hands in certain situations.

I have given up playing SNG’s as there are only 2 sites (Stars & Party) where it makes any sense to multitable the Turbo’s. As none of them are offering bonuses to me at the moment I have no intention to play here.

I play the occasional MTT and my play there has been very good. I am making the money often but then I do not open my play considerably enough to make the final tables. My ratio of ITM and making the final table is horrendous. Something I hope Mkind’s video’s can help me with.

I am thinking of trying out $200NL when my BR hits the $5k mark. I am nearly there and I believe that I am solid enough to take shots.

Aaaaargh!!! If that's how Jager feels then I really question his sanity to play this game Laughing What an arse of a session. "Only" 2 buy-ins down but how they were lost defies logic. AK the big loser, loosing against AQ and AJ (50BB shorties AI pre-flop). Only 1 misplayed hand for -$60 and the rest is just variance. I need a break.

I had my first decent sessions of cash games since I hurt my back. Thanks Tramadol! I was a little bit down thanks to some donkeys calling big raises with J2o or K4o. I had some of the worst players at my tables but I never got any hands going against them. I had some big draws and I hit never any of them and it was just impossible to get them of bottom pair. The only really big pot was with my set of 99 (rivered Quads) against horribly bad played Rockets. Overall my play was good but not spectacular. However, I seem to tread water at the moment and its just break-even play. At least the bonuses keep me ahead. Oh the joys of a 2-tabling grinder.

I also played a freeroll on Everest on Sunday morning where first price is a $5k package to the Pokernews Cup in Melbourne. I played very well but finished 4th which is close but no cigar.

Also my love/hate relationship with Ongame continues. I really like the opposition players but I get disconnected so often? I emailed Hollywood to find out if it’s just me but I never have any problems on any other sites.

I am starting to wonder whether its OK to push AK oop against an unknown's 4bet (100bb stacks)? I'm pretty sure it should be profitable in the long run but the losses on AK turned a fantastic session into just a good one.

Funnily enough my image was immediately shot on those tables that I got nicely paid off on my good hands.

My BR has kissed $5k for the first time yesterday. I believe that bar any downswings my goal of reaching $6k by the end of September is achievable. I am even contemplating using $2k then to buy a new laptop + 22"inch monitor and continue to grind the 100nl. The NZ$ is so strong that laptops are as cheap as never before.

Note to self. Stop doing stupid stuff towards the end of a session when your concentration levels are down. Again a great session turned into an OK one with a couple of misplayed hands. Was up over 2x buy-ins and then it all ended up in just +$70 over 600 hands. Still I managed to clear the Hollywood sign-up Bonus. I will stay at Ongame but go to Tower for one of their 7x Bonus.

Month so far: 2685 hands, +$91 / 1,7BB/100 thanks to the last 2 days where I managed 1168 hands, +209 / 9,96 BB/100. It could have been so much better if not for some 3 retarted hands.

Thanks will check it out! Tower (also Ongame) just gave me a bumper Bonus offer. No Deposit, $500 at 5x within 30 days. Even 2-tabling that should be possible.

I was steaming for ages yesterday after suffering bad beat after another. At least I knew when to stop. I went then with a friend to the Auckland vs Waikato Rugby game which we won. Then we went to a pub to watch the Warriors vs Titans League game which the mighty Warriors won. A great sporting night and my first time on the boozer for ages. What a great sporting night.

I have been posting a lot more lately as I am in the endspurt of my operation. The Rugby World Cup starts in 26 days and the operation was to have $6k by then. I am doing the $500 Bonus on Tower at the moment for which I need 2500 points. Even 2-tabling that should be possible I just have to make time for poker. Bar any downswings plus the Bonus I should be having $6k then and this operation would be complete.

Here my favourite hand of the day. It was nice to see that I was finally on the receiving end of a set-over-set:

Had a nice little session last night. +$189 over 500 hands. Bankroll is over $5k for the first time. I am running at +9 BB/100 over the last couple of weeks despite some bad sessions in between. Seems that I am getting paid off on my good hands a lot lately.

My sessions start off usually quite spewey and I call down really light, then my image is often fishy and I get paid off on my good hands. Unfortunately I often then loose most of my winnings again in the last 45 minutes of the session. I think this is due to a loss in concentration and FPS.

In my first session today I was up 2x BI just to loose them all again in small/medium pots. So when I was up 1.5 BI's in my second session I called it quits.

Here some of the big hands of the day. I admit that some of them were badly played but I often play based on reads:

Me neither. That's why I put them in. What do you think?

Hand 4: I should have bet the turn
Hand 7: I was torn here. No reads. I think I should have folded or pushed the turn.

Hand #4 yes. Hand #7 I fold the turn, unless you think he's full of shit. In which case, don't push, there's no draws you'll get value from so if you really think he's bluffing it's a complete air bluff. So call and call river. But like I said, I way prefer the turn fold.

I played about 1k hands at only +$100 over the weekend. My back is still hurting a lot so I can only sit for an hour or so.

I really think that I need to upgrade my laptop. The old one is so slow. 30gbHD, 128mbRAM, 1.6 Celeron processor. Does that make your mouth water?

Anyway, I think about buying this setup:

Dell XPS M1330

Dell E228WFP 22" monitor

That would cost me about NZ$2500 (about US$1750). Anyone think that this is a bad idea or has a better suggestion?

Get the 2707WFP. Has the same aspect ratio, and the letters are as big, which is bigger than the 24".
This one has a 6-bit panel. The 2707WFP has an 8-bit panel, which means its able to reproduce a lot more colors.
I love that 'puter. Last Thursday & Friday I had a photoshoot to put it on a billboard. Too bad my hands are so big, or I'd get me one too.

Thanks for the tip about the monitor. I have actually decided to go for the Dell 1520. It has more Memory and a better graphics card and was also cheaper. The only advantage of the XPS M1330 was the size and design but as I hardly travel with the laptop this feature was less usefull to me. I can't wait to get my hands on my new laptop. I can finally add some more tables to my poker setup.
