Wow, has my life changed. Got Hold'em Poker for Advanved Players and boy, my game has gotten better...and I'm still not totally done reading it yet(I skipped a couple of the sections such as playing against a live straddle and playing in spread limit games).
This book has had a profound effect on my pre-flop play and really started making me think a lot harder about the play of my opponents. In addition, I've found it a lot easier to lay down hands that before would have cost me greatly(for example, being able to lay down top pair when the board pairs
I play in a few small home games(limit and no-limit, buy-in anywhere from a buck to 10 bucks) and I continue to dominate them.
I play online as well...the bug bit me a few days ago so I deposited 10 bucks at my favorite poker room(heh), and have since turned it into 80 playing .25/.50 limit almost exclusively. Yeah, relatively, its not much, but the biggest downswing I've taken so far is 5 bucks, and I've ended each session in the +.
I suppose the best thing this book did for me is open my eyes to some new strategies and work them into my own limits and style of play. |

| Did I say turned that 10 into 80? I changed my mind...it's now 120...and this is still solely at .25/.50 tables. |

Good job. If you want to follow-up on that Sklansky book, I hear "Small Stakes Holdem" By Sklansky and Ed Miller is a great book to read. I've heard rave reviews about it.
I have my copy ordered. |

| I would definetly reccomend SSH. Its amazing how well the books describes situations that i've come up against at low level limit tables. Having read it and looked back over quite a few hands in PokerTracker its easy to see how to apply what the book teaches to what actually happens. I've also started to show a nice profit in my games. |

It is a good book.
I would take small stakes holdem over HPFAP.
I have both and I believe SSH has been better for my type of games.
HPFAP is geard for larger games...
SSHE is geared towards crushing the lower loose limit games.
Hence the title |

would you reccomend this book for NL? or does it focus on just low limit games? I'm trying to decide which poker book to get to help me in my games (.05/.10 NL at RV, .25/.50 NL at PokerRoom and my NL home games) |

{Moved from Hold'em Strategies}
I'm reading The Theory of Poker, another widely-praised Sklansky book, right after I finish Caro's Book of Tells. |

Ditto!
By the way, I got Theory of Poker along with 2 other Poker Books for free for signing up at Pacific Poker via Jes_Gru's suggestion of using www.pokermama.com. I was a little skeptical at first but I did indeed receive 3 free books from them for signing up along with $25 in Bonus money on my $100 initial deposit. Not too shabby as I was ready to fork out the cash to purchase these books anyway.
Pacific Poker is alright but there are alot of drawbacks, howerver. First, there are NO NL ring games available there as of yet. Only limit tables. they do have NL tourneys though. Secondly, you cannot play more than one table at a time there. That stinks. Lastly, IMO it is slow. But, i can deal with it for the 3 free books.
Sorry, this last part of the message probably belongs in the "Online Poker Room" forum.
Anyway, thanks, Jes_Gru! |

| Is SSH purely for ring games or does it apply to tournaments, i'm thinking about buying TPFAP by sklansky but if SSH covers tournys then maybe i should get that instead. |

SSH is very specifically focused on ring games, and how to make money over the long term.
i really don't know how transferrable the concepts are with the whole "limited time to make something happen" dynamic of a tourney. |

I've ordered Theory of Poker, Championship NL and PL Holdem, and Psychology of Poker from Poker Stars frequent player points. None have gotten here yet, as it says to allow 3 weeks for shipping.
Does anyone have any suggestions of what other books to get from Poker Stars? I'm most interested in quality books that deal with NL tournies and NL ring play, either live or online. I'm not too interested in books that just cover the basics.
Here's the list of the other books they have:
Holdem Poker (Carson)
Internet Poker (Krieger)
Championship Satelliete Strategy (McEvoy)
Internet Texas Holdem (Hilger)
Holdem for Advanced Players (Sklansky)
Winning Low Limit Holdem (Jones)
Tournament Poker for Advanced Players (Sklansky)
Tournament Poker (McEvoy) |
