I am naming my new operation after the eponymous post by Spoonitnow on his blog: http://www.spoonitnow.com/poker/impulse-control-willpower-ego/

I will try not to fool myself into thinking "I'll make this marginal calldown so that I can see what he does this with and play better against this player in the future." Even if it's 10BB to call and we only lose a couple of BB every time we call because we do win some of the time, I don't think it's a winning proposition because we have no guarantee that this knowledge will ever come in handy. This is just my own wish to "see what he has" but rationalized in a way that seems like we're making a good play to exploit our opponent in the future. As long as I keep that in mind, I can exercise "Impulse Control."

You will find that in poker, more than anyone else, the most important opponent is you. Even if your poker skills are lacking, if you have the desire and the patience to study you will get better and eventually succeed. Conversely, even if you're best player in the world, lacking self-control can make you go busto. This is why when I set my bankroll requirements I stick to them. It's not just because I want to follow good BR management, but also to prove to myself that I can follow my own advice. This is part of improving my "Willpower."

spoonitnow wrote:
When you have $10000, play 200nl. (50 buy-ins)

To that I will also add:
When you have $20000, play 400NL. (50 buy-ins)
When you have $33000, play 3/6 NL. (55 buy-ins)
When you have $60000, play 5/10 NL. (60 buy-ins)

This is because I think my edge will decrease as I move up and my variance will increase as I play increasingly more aggressive opponents. I will subtract the taxes from my bankroll as well.

I will be shooting to play 1kNL sometime in 2009, but this is not a hard deadline. If I feel like I don't have a decent edge I won't move up; much the same as quitting better opponents. As long as I am realistic about my own skills and only play people who I feel will give me money I will be successful. This is part of controlling my "Ego."

I already spend a lot of time watching heads-up videos as part of my study. If I follow the advice I outlined myself here and force myself to spend enough time at the poker tables I feel like I can complete this operation.

I have completed my previous operation titled "iopq's Operation: get to 100NL." You can find it here: http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/forum/iopq-s-operation-get-to-100nl-t78268.html

But do you know what people really want? They want what they’ve got. It’s a simple formula: You have what you want because your actions produced your results. Not your words and certainly not your wants.

here's an interesting quote about booking wins:
Jared Tendler wrote:
Regarding booking wins, I think it comes down to the difference between winning and earning. Winning and losing are the short-term realities of poker given varience and why you have bank roll. Earning is the point where you've gone through enough ups/downs where you can say that money is earned income and you can pull it out. Rather than focusing on winning, focus on by playing more, especially when playing well, and that will allow you to realize income sooner.

this is talking about how to be "process oriented" rather than "results oriented":
Jared Tendler wrote:
So how do you learn it? There are a number of ways:

1) Repetition everyday regardless of whether the issues comes up. This helps to build familiarity, so when the problem does show up and emotion may throw you off your plan, you can instead recognize the problem in the moment and return to focusing on playing well, rather than protecting your win.

2) When the issue does show up, take a couple deep breath to seperate yourself from the emotion a bit. This is an emotional prob, so its treated just like I treat Tilt. Then remind yourself of your long-term goals and how playing right now is important to getting there. Fight your way to extend the session longer, even if its just for another few minutes that's progress. Over time, you'll be able to push yourself further and further as you 1) gain experience doing it, 2) increase the strength of the long-term perspective/process oriented approach. Quitting is an option many people suggest, I only suggested it if you are risk at making sig mistakes. If you can continue to play well and think you have an edge in the game, pushing yourself to play well in a spot that is tough for you, is a big help to learning the long-term perspective better and in reinforcing parts of your game that can often be leaks.

3) Set process oriented goals. Many players have goals that talk about money, hours, limits to play, hands, etc. All things that can easily quantified. They are important, but you need to balance them with process goals that talk about the specific skills that you want to develop. In this case your goal is to have the process oriented approach/long-term perspective to show up in the short-term.

Here is a list of things to do in every hand before clicking a button:
1) What is the prior action?
2) What is his range?
3) What is my range?
4) What's the best line to take?

and $1000NL is a wicked goal for 2009. I will be blown away if I make it to $200NL.

This is so sick, possibly a new future high-stakes balla at FTR. I have a feeling you're going to make it because you really seem to know your stuff and I imagine your dicipline is beyond average intellect considering your success thus far.

GL man

Thanks for your support guys Smile
I posted some hands on 2+2 in a thread titled "100NL Session against a spewy LAG" and the response was:
luvsi wrote:
i see a spewy lag but its not villain

;-(
but it's true, I've been fpsing myself into running elaborate bluffs because successfully bluffing feels good
I rationalized it by saying "I'm building an aggressive image" or "If I never bluff I have it every time"

but against maniacs it's just as easy to sit back and get three good hands in a row to take their stack

Parasurama wrote:

I'm playing cash because I think I have a slightly bigger edge when playing deep. That and I feel like taking ten years to clear my reload bonuses on stars lol.

I was kind of sad because I dropped four buyins. Then I read Slevin's OP and felt better about myself.

Rofl, I know right? I was really proud of him for doing so well, then I look at it a couple days ago and BAM! old slevin kicked back in. Let see if he can wise up (doubtful, but there's hope).

Slevin's fail encouraged me so I went and played and won my four buyins back!

Although I feel like a pussy for not updating my OP graffic when I lost 4 buyins and only when I won 6 Razz

Not following spoon's advice seems -EV. But if it leads to success it's a major confidence boost.

Meh I decided to go to 50NL 6m even though I won half a buyin at NL100
seems to be more confidence boosting to win in NL50 by a lot than to win at NL100 just a little

do you feel like you have an edge at current stakes vs regs HU - or do you need to be playing fish?
where do you feel a solid edge vs regs HU?

You're playing other games to max profits, right? or to clear bonuses with FPPs? That should affect the games you choose.
If I take up some HU this year (debating at the moment) I may have to ask for some advice!!!

I have an edge vs. NL50 regs, but not against NL100 regs
at NL100 you have people come down from 5/10 to try things out or to make videos lol
it's pretty scary how good some of those people are

but in NL50 the regs are just people who are just starting and grinding up a roll so they're not that great yet
you can't really make a living grinding NL50 HU unless you play like 4+ tables at the same time

BTW, stars is terrible for HU, tilt Rakeback > stars points by far
I'm clearing a Bonus at NL50 6m on stars right now and it's going pretty well
After I finish that up I'll probably go back on tilt and play some 50NL HU because HU is just too much fun

yo I played some NL50 HU on FTP (rakebackaments) and I found a huge leak in my game
when I play OOP I play like shit because I do retarded shit like c/c with ace high on the flop
because when I'm in position I might not bet that flop and check behind so I just check OOP and get bet into and I'm like lol can't fold ace high since he bets when checked to!

it's just a shitty spot and I should just b/f despite the fact that it's not very believable
this is why I'm bad at playing in 3b pots since I am OOP in HU
hopefully I can translate this into better results in my game in general
I've been doing pretty well in 6m, I'll post stats after I play two more hours today and reach 10K hands just to have an even number, lol

ok I should be taking a shot at NL100
well I shouldn't say taking a shot because I've already taken shots and I'm way overrolled for NL50

but yeah I'm not that excited because I've already played some NL100
I wish I had the discipline to grind a long time because then I'd make many moneys ;__;

I'm using the remainder of this month to get in say 20K hands
this will allow me to clear my Bonus, get platinum star, and get started on another reload Bonus

I hope I can make it happen!

Well, I'm finally back on track
despite the
PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $1.00 BB (4 handed) - Poker-Stars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

UTG ($60)
Hero (Button) ($102.50)
SB ($93.70)
BB ($95.55)

Preflop: Hero is Button with 2, 2
UTG (poster) checks, Hero calls $1, SB bets $8, 2 folds, Hero calls $7

Flop: ($18) 2, 8, 10 (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $9, SB raises to $25, Hero raises to $94.50 (All-In), SB calls $60.70 (All-In)

Turn: ($189.40) Q (2 players, 2 all-in)

River: ($189.40) 5 (2 players, 2 all-in)

Total pot: $189.40 | Rake: $2

Results:
Hero mucked 2, 2 (three of a kind, twos).
SB had Q, Q (three of a kind, Queens).
Outcome: SB won $187.40

I'm finally positive in NL100!

wow I got a virus, and in the process of cleaning it my AV fucked something in windows
now instead of backing up my files I just tried installing windows on the same partition and for some reason it failed so I just said, fuck it, we're doing it live and repartitioned my HD wiping my entire life's poker database
not the smartest thing I've ever done, but at least I know how to install windows now

lesson learned: Always have a spare hard drive. You might be able to get recent HHs emailed from the sites, but I doubt they'd be able to send you more than the past week.

I got 2K hands from stars yay 4 stars support they sent me a zip with them
(the other 140K are on my other computer)
I also deposited $600 for $120 reload on stars

I also realized it would be ridiculous if in one year of playing I made as little as I had
I've played like what 2.5K hands this month? Really resting up for a big grind!
I've decided: May will be a 6K month so I can move up to NL200
I'll play 30 hours a week
that means tomorrow I have to play 2.5K hands

4BI up

hands: 1539/60000
honestly, that's the most I've played in a single day this year
I've already tried making up excuses for why I played this little before I even played... so I guess I'll try to play more tomorrow since I'm obviously not really used to playing 3 sessions in a day

I'm going to go buy some random shit now on the internet because i can afford to mwuahaha

I have a lot of trouble getting disciplined about how many hours I get in each month. I depend on it for my living and last month I played 73 hours total. I had never played that many in a month before! This month I'm shooting for 100 hours, I got in 8 today (most ever in a day online cash only) I guess we'll see how it goes.

GL.

at this rate I'll be like half way to my goal Sad
however, I'm really happy with my results... maybe that will encourage me to do a final push later in the month

I just found out that if you live in the UK Stars just gave you a promotion worth $2800
I'll just clear my bonuses and wait for it to come to the US

I just read about your virus. If I were you Id start considering taking $600 or so and buying a cheap laptop which you only use for poker + PT/ HEM/Hud of your choice. Once youre playing for serious money, its not worth the risk of getting hacked to play on your "normal computer" imo.

igor - i think your e-mail whine means we (=non-uk players) will never get this Bonus. Stupid short-sighted whiners.

I changed my pokar passwords, and since I reformatted I shouldn't have it. I will just keep my computer really lean and won't install so much software on it.

I actually said that to get him to confess that it won't be coming to the US. But it kind of makes sense, if I thought that we'd get the same promotion and that I may or may not get SN this year I might as well wait for the promotion, right? I'd be getting more RB if I waited for the promotion

BTW, I feel kind of meh today so hands: 5982/60000
but starting tomorrow I'll play 3-4 hours a day on stars and 1-2 hours a day on tilt
the reason is that I want to both clear my stars reload bonuses and get card runners lol
