From Bill@billnelson.senate.gov to me
Dear [myname]
Thank you for contacting me regarding online gambling.
While most internet gambling operations are already banned by Federal laws, enforcement obstacles remain. Because many of these internet gambling enterprises operate overseas and beyond the reach of U.S. authorities, enforcement has proven difficult.
Currently, two bills have been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives to address the problems posed by internet gambling. H.R. 4777, the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, and H.R. 4411, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2005, would strengthen Federal anti-gaming laws to, among other things, bar internet gambling sites from accepting credit cards, checks, and other forms of payment.
Rest assured that I will keep your views in mind should this issue come before the Senate. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future.
-----------------
I did contact him again. He never replied. While this isn't a "form letter" per se, it certainly doesn't say anything. "Yup. Theres some bills. Thanks for writing!"
(I didn't vote for him.) |

Late to the party; but still wanted to dance. Here's the response I received from one, no other responses yet. Follow up sent asking for the specific legislation banning internet gambling (not sure it's applicable, lot s of loopholes ie: http://www.pokerplayernewspaper.com/viewarticle.php?id=1185)

Dear ( ),
Thank you for contacting me in
opposition to Internet gambling legislation.
I appreciate your input.
Internet gambling is illegal under both
state and federal law, with a few
exceptions. Some states allow bets to be
placed online if the bet is exclusively made
and received within that state. In
addition, a few states have entered
interstate gambling compacts such as the
Interstate Horseracing Act that allow
betting to occur across state lines.
However, in general placing bets across
state lines by phone, the Internet or other
means is prohibited under federal law.
Several bills have been introduced to
strengthen enforcement of current law
including H.R. 4411 and H.R. 4777. No
action has been taken to date.
As always, I appreciate your input.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if I
may ever be of assistance to you or your
family.
Stay in touch,
/s

this isn't a big deal. its all about the senators now. call and write your senator!
unfortunately, I am in virginia. rep tom davis was a lost cause. george allen is a lost cause. i'm not sure on john warner. I can say that at least davis has lost my vote, we'll see how allen and warner do, if it gets voted on that is. i just might have to stomach voting for a democrat - just this once. |

As a former legislative staffer who wrote these replies, getting a generic "Thanks for writing, I will keep your comments in mind" means that either A) they don't know what the heck you are talking about, or B) they disagree with you but they don't want to come out and say it. Sometimes, it means that they genuinely haven't made up their mind yet, but that's rare.
But keep on contacting your elected officials; all of these contacts are recorded and tracked, and it can make a difference! |

| Also keep in mind that it's very likely this bill will be tabled by the end of the session and die there. |

If online poker dies, we may go ahead and turn this place into FlopTurnRilla. |

I added this to the form letter and thought some might find it interesting:
Hello,
I am not a criminal, and yes I do play a little online poker for mostly entertainment purposes. I find it a good pastime, which exercises the mind at the same time. Although luck does indeed play a part in poker, there is plenty of skill involved when one considers odds and such.
Are there people for whom playing poker can become a serious problem? I would imagine yes, just as there are plenty of people who are complusive drinkers, complusive eaters, complusive politicians, complusive workaholics, and complusive coveters of all things (insert whatever you want).
Do not make criminals out of people like me just because there are compulsive people who have abusive tendencies.
Sincerely,
Tom Moniz

Thank you guys for keeping up on the current rulings up on Capital Hill. Thank you to the forum owners for creating this thread. The PPA is hard at work to ensure all poker players rights and we urge you all to help spread the word to as many online and offline players you can. We are a mebers based non-profit so joining is key to allow your voice to be heard as a collective group. We have 35k plus members just in 6 months and would like to get to 100k by years end.
The WSOP is next week and anyone who is a member are invited to our party on the 28th at the Rio. If you are a member and interested in attentding, please contact me at the PPA or stop by our booth which we are sharing with Cardplayer Cruises at booth 420.
Thank you all again,

Well, I hope I'm not too late but I've sent emails to my senators (Kerry and Kennedy - Massachusetts).
Sorry to hear about Washington state - I hope any FTR'rs over there have found ways around that. |

2nd Edit: Normally I don't talk much about politics. I really dislike talking about politics. However, I feel the need to say something now.
I wish these fucking fatass republican bastards who became politicians because they suck at life so bad would quit putting up an act like they really lift a fucking finger for their fatass paycheck.
*huff and puff*
Okay. I think I'm better now. |
First, I realize that post is a month old, but I gotta defend my peeps. As you can tell from my screename, I'm one of the "fatass republican bastards " although not a politician. I live in that bluest of blue states, Washington, where the State Legislature passed a law that made it a Class C Felony to play poker online for money as of the June of this year. Our two Democratic US senators, Maria "can't vote well" Cantwell and Patty "won't someone please think of the children!" Murray are both on the record supporting the federal legislation that would make us all criminals. There are dingbats in both partys. I think they should make it like a fishing or hunting license, if they have to regulate it at all(I'd prefer they didn't but I can see the writing on the wall). Charge 5-10 bucks a year for an "online gaming permit". I'd pay it and I think the majority of others would too.
By the way, ahem, I believe with all my heart in full compliance with all of the applicable laws of the land |

*shrug* I just wish some of the old republican party ideals still existed. You know, the pre-Regan ones:
* small gov
* gov doesn't mess in citizen's personal lives
* tight gov finances
neither major party believes in those ideas anymore. |

Its called the Libertarian party, if these are your ideals, you should really look it up, i consider myself mainly Libertarian, unfornunately their party is way too small. |

I agree the party is too small to be worthwhile. I wish I lived in a country where more than two parties were in contention.
I also don't agree with all of the upperase Libertarian platform anway.
I prefer to think of myself as a lowercase libertarian. |

Yeah, I'm quite familiar with the Libertarians. An old professor of mine is a perennial candidate for the party in Massachusetts.
But sadly we are pretty set in a two-party state, which is why I mourn what I perceived as the old Republican party. Quite likely the reality was different, but that was what I thought they stood for as I was growing up. Not a fan of the modern Conservative party that masquerades as the GOP, tho. |
