Edit (March 12th, '08) : New title but same thread. Gonna focus more on posting interesting hands than chronicling my results (end edit).

I don't have enough. I need more...

hands played.

I'm gonna try to log 30k hands between now and Christmas break (around Dec 17th)

Considering I'm a big fan of taking days off, this means I'll need to avg just above 1k hands per day played.

For most of you grinders, this seems like nothing but it's a shitload of poker for me. Last time I tried to play"regularly" I got sick of it after 4 days and have been on a 3 week "break" ever since.

I guess I never really got used to grinding. The closest I came was when I was learning cash games playing B2 B bonus-whoring. That's also where I developed my hyper-aggro style to counteract the nits on B 2 B.

I just find cashgames so fking stressful. Busting out of a tourney on a big bluff or getting sucked out on on the bubble doesn't faze me at all. But making a big calldown and being wrong or throwing away a big pot just wears on me in cash games. It's also emotionally tough becase the money is a lot in my world (doctorate student in classical piano LOL JOBOFFERAMENTS).

I got to nl400 about 30k hands into my cash game career, taking my roll from 2k in May to 21k at the end of September running at a ridiculous 12ptbb between nl50 and nl200... It was only then that I moved to nl400 with over 50 buy-ins. I suddenly became somewhat gun-shy and after a couple thousand hands of break-even poker felt more afraid of losing that eager to play...

Hopefully, posting this will serve as an incentive to play. I'm an exhibitionist, so I hope to post lots of pwnage and (not so much) spewage in this thread soon.

My idea is that after every session I'll post :

-biggest bluff
-biggest spew
-biggest call-down
-hand I think I played the best (either lost least/won the most)

I'll also figure out exactly what my BR - after withdrawing a few k for school and stuff - is before starting and give daily BR updates. I don't care if I make money but I'd really like to hit the 30k hand target.

Cool idea.

I'm not sure daily BR updates is particularly helpful (can lead to being a bit results oriented).
But the biggest bluff/spew etc could be cool.

The next time you're going to make a heroic call when you're 95% sure you're toast you'll be thinking "yeah, but I'll have to post this crap if I'm wrong" Smile

gonna stop after booking a modest win in a short session of 3-4 tabling

I feel very different on the tables after talking so much about poker and sweating ppl, playing donkaments etc. over the past few weeks

Only felt I got myself into truly tough spots about twice through overaggression or passive play

The best thing about today's session was that I never felt I did anything automatically. Even if it was 2 seconds, I thought before every action. My biggest leak in the past has been "ummm wtf do I do... RAISE!" which was decent against mindless nits but became spewy against more aware competition after nl200-400.

I mainly raised my position and threw away many more hands than I usually do in early position. Not surprisingly, this resulted in some pretty Slaggy stats : 36/27/2.6 (AF decreasing slightly from flop to river).

I don't really have any hands that merit their own posts in the forum so I'll just post the interesting hands right here along with my "biggest" ones (bluff, spew, best hand, etc.). These were all nl200 as I didn't want to jump right back into the more stressful nl400 games.

This hand played itself, but I was pumped because my read (thanks to AceHud) was that I was getting monster implied odds for trips/2 pair on turn since this guy was RAISING EXACTLY 2% OF HANDS LMAO... I just prayed it wasn't KK. If I miss the turn, not another $ goes into the pot.

This was butchered pretty badly. I'm not a fan of 3-betting AQ. Folding it is weak. I usually decide to either play to make money of worse aces or queens and sometimes I decide before the hand to "not give up" on an innocent-looking board. I think my edge is biggest 4-handed and less since most ppl have a tough time adapting to very shorthanded play. I manged to keep a cpl tables shorthanded and shorties kept coming and giving me their money. It's a good thing because with the coolers, beats and ill-timed aggression I could have been waaaay down 2day. Here's an example of what I kept running into today :

Another place where I get into risky business. It doesn't bug me playing high-risk, high-variance poker (since when u run well u make so much more than a standard TAGG) but sometimes I just look for edges that aren't there.

I know ( or I’m like 90% here he does) villain in this hand has the 2nd nut boat here on the river. Trying to push him off it is def –ev. Ugh. This is exactly how I’d play a 10… But does HE know that? And even if he does, do I really expect him to fold a hand? LMAO gg me.

Overall, I think my big mistake was pulling some of my floats/delayed bluffs OOP against the better players instead of focusing on the weak-tighties and waiting for spots in position. Then again, I lost a lot of mid-sized on the turn pots through different villain's hitting 11% cards where usually I take that shit daaoown...

Here's something I do a lot that I think most "standard" players don't do enough of :

Block bet. Villain is not very good and imo incapable of big moves. It's so easy to put villain on a monster if he raises the river it's silly... Usually I get a cheap price vs a 2pair-ish hand and weak players will sometimes even smooth-call with a set, fearing I am value-betting a straight, since my line matches up with 97 :

I played my overpairs well 2day I think. A persistant leak of mine has been underplaying (to the point of losing tons of value, especially OOP) my big pairs whenever the board is the slightest bit scary. 3) When villain raises I figure he flopped the flush. That being said, my spade is probably higher than his (he just prob limped suited garbage on the button. The king of spades hitting (as opposed to the 8 or the 6 or some shit) is the key card in getting me to call. I now have the 3rd nuts and have seen ppl overplay flopped flushes way too often to fold. Like I mentioned before, if the king doesn’t hit (or obv if I don’t make my flush) then I never even get to the river.

The other important thing happening here is that I let him keep betting. This is a crucial aspect of biggish call-downs. When you figure you probably have the best hand on the turn, then usually there’s no sense raising to “protect” your hand. All you’ll do is get your money in quicker vs the nuts and fold out worse hands. Btw I just saw the results for this hand now as I post it. Lucky read I guess…

Only thing worth posting besides that is probably what 3-betting preflop vs an aggro player can do to them. I've repopped this guy 3 or 4 times already (he's super aggro preflop). played what seemed like a million hands today (so it was probalby around 1.5k) but played away from my cpu.

2 separate sessions, broke even 1st one despite being up to 1k at an nl200 table then dropped 1k in first 30 min of 2nd session. Turned it around for a nice 500$ profit before quitting after having aa and kk cracked in B2B hands.

This is probably the worst hand I've played since I began this operation. On every street my instincts told me "ugh he's fuckin strong here...". I almost timed out calling both the flop and the turn. Problem was I could only put villain on 2 hands and they were both gigantic monsters... I've been playing less and less afraid of monsters lately. But this was definitely a fold from the flop on. I was down over 1k in first 25 minutes during this one. That's loootttts of $$$ for nl200... I turned it around though. Instead of my usual 4-tables playing superlagg I decided to tighten up and play 6 tables. Problem is, every time it was folded to me in CO or on Btn and I had WMD's (J6o or some monster like that) I just couldn't help myself...

This hand was encouraging to me. I almost timed out on the river, I was just so sure I was beat. Granted it’s basically unfoldable for less than, say, 250bb’s without a sick sick read. But the fact my radar is so sharp right now made me feel good :

Just a sidenote : ppl were definitely aware that I was raising junk, but they weren't fighting back preflop. They were fighting back postflop by never folding a pair... So almost 1/2 of my profit came from stealing the blinds, amazingly (about 60 BB over 1k hands just from winning uncontested pots preflop. sick.)

I float a ton. Here’s a situation where I hit one of the cards I’m looking for but felt torn. Villain has been pretty damn aggro postflop and has taken a cpl big pots off of me. The problem with raising here is that he quite often doesn’t even have a pair. On the other hand, if he does have a KQ-ish type hand a lot of cards will kill my action on the river.

I felt like minraising but am still not sure what best course of action would be. He knows I’m capable of big moves after the flop. I think he’ll pay me off w AQ on a safe river a ton…

One thing I’ve been doing really well at lately is controlling the size of my pots. This hand might seem like I did just the opposite. I figured my hand was likely best on the flop. I figured a min-raise could get villain to do something stupid since we’d been tangling a shitload and I’d been raising his c-bets pretty regularly. Plan was to call his re-minraise and push a safe turn to protect a decent –sized pot (since if he was bluffing flop he’d likely check behind on turn) :
